    Northwest Childrens Outreach

I have NEVER enjoyed working for a charitable organization so much as the night I helped out at…read moreNWCO last month. I LOVE the fact that every single person is a volunteer. I LOVE the fact that the location they collect, sort and package children's clothing in takes place in a building that has been donated to the organization - rent free. I LOVE that the only overhead costs they have are electricity and heat. I LOVE that they are not snobs about the donations and will even pass along gently worn socks and underwear. If a mother chooses not to clothe her children in these items, that is her prerogative, but it should be hers and hers alone. I think that when it comes down to it, most mothers would opt for their children to have then to go without. Besides, that is what bleach and washing machines are for. I LOVE that you get a card with a child's name and age to work from. It gives you a sense of relationship to the child you are compiling a care package of clothes, books and toys for. I especially LOVE that they pray over the children we are trying to help, their parent's and the volunteer group, before you start. I will be back this month....with bags of clothes, toys and games that my friends have helped me put together.

I have no doubt this organization serves a very useful service in the community, however their…read morepublic relations could certainly use some improving. I live in Beaverton, but my daughter teaches in Vancouver, The school where she teaches is a very high poverty school. I choose to take a very large donation over to Vancouver, with the thought it may help some of the kids in her school. When I arrived, there was a man working by the front door, he never acknowledged me until I asked if this is where I should leave donations. I then proceeded to unload my car of four very large containers of clothes, and three bags. By then, there were three or four other employees standing about, no one offered to help take the containers into the store front. When I finally was done with the unloading, not one of the employees even looked my way, or had the courtesy to say, thank you. I wasn't looking for accolades for my "good deed", but a simple thank you would have been appreciated. I spent a lot of time and effort, sorting through all the clothes to be certain only items in very good condition were included, I folded them carefully and packed them. I will find another charity, that is perhaps more appreciative of peoples efforts, the up side is some boys are going to have some nice clothes to wear to school and for that I am thankful.

K9 Kavalry is possibly the best disabled veteran based nonprofit that helps teach the veteran to…read moretrain their dog to become their service dog. They never give up on a veteran or a dog and the training is done in a unique way. They go above and beyond for their pack members. I called many places who turned me down because I have a German Shepherd, but K9k took us and we have been happily a part of the pack for 4 years now. If you meet the criteria to join the program it is free for disabled veterans. Without K9 Kavalry I would be lost and my dog would not be a service dog. I am grateful to this nonprofit everyday. Not only because of the help training my dog, but because of the camaraderie between all the veterans. The support they offer and what they give the dogs and the veterans is unparalleled and exceeds every other program I have personally looked into and seen. I highly recommend K9 Kavalry to any disabled veteran who has a dog they want to train themselves to be a service dog. They offer trainers to help with the training so the veteran is never alone. They operate off of donations from donors and not money from the veterans themselves. However, this is well beyond a free is for me sort of program. The training offered and the assistance given to both the veteran and the dog is much more than a price tag. It's not just a community or place to train a dog, it's a community for disabled veterans and a support system for both in every way. I absolutely love that they have always gone above and beyond for everyone who has been a member and I will continue to be a part of this program for as long as I have a dog. This isn't just a place that gives you a dog that is trained and it involves work on the veteran/owners part, but they will always have the support of the nonprofit to aide them with anything they need. Most places count out certain breeds and dogs based off behaviors months into training, but K9k will continue to work with the dog and the veteran for as long as both are willing to put in the work. I'm more grateful to this program and nonprofit than words can express and I can't wait to see it continue to grow in the future to continue making positive changes for the veteran community even beyond just disabled veterans and the challenges they and our service dogs face.

Not sure how this place has 5 star reviews. I messaged his site about my mower that ran, but the…read moreblade didn't spin. He showed up to our first appointment over 2 hours late and did a 4-6 minute diagnosis on it and said he'd contact me in the next day or two to let me know when he could fix it. I said it ran last time I used it, the transmission ran, the blade just wouldn't spin and that's all I knew. A week went by and nothing, I was about to move on then, but he called and we set up an appointment the next week. He was 2 and a half hours late to that appointment too. Before he came the day before, I asked if he had any idea how much it would be and all he would say was "Cheap as possible" I know service can't give you a direct quote because things pop up, but he could at least say the cable is x dollars, my hourly rate is x, it will take x time so anything more will be above that. This is where I started to get the scammy vibes. It's a 10 year old mover so he suggested I change the belt so I said go ahead. He asked if I had a covered area, I have a completely covered patio in the back so I said yeah. Never asked if it was in the front or the back. He starts replacing the broken cable and realizes he has the wrong cable so he needs to go get a new one. Comes back, puts the cable on, then says, oh that's not the right blade so I got a new one for you. I knew the blade that I put on it was the exact same blade that came off it, I bought the mower new from Home Depot, got the new blade from Home Depot, The blade literally says that it's for my model lawnmower in the title on their website. It was the right blade. His was a totally different shape. He said it would be $25 more so I just said whatever. Then some time goes by and I see him taking the carbs off and pulling the air filter, messing with the oil so I start wondering is this going to cost me so I went out and asked him why he was doing all this extra work? He just assumed he was going to do whatever he wanted. Yes my air filter is dirty as hell, it's a 10 year old mower. But it ran. So we have a disagreement there, he says "I just like to do thorough work." I said I didn't ask for any of this, I just wanted the blade to spin. So he seems pretty butthurt at that point, comes to the door and says how about $200? At that point I just wanted it to be done so I agreed that I would pay him $200. He works some more, He says he's done. I go out to pay him, give him cash as he's writing my invoice. He's about to send it and says "Why don't you try to start it up" so I do and I couldn't even pull the cord it was so tight. He flips it over and is like oh damn, theres another belt in there that's all twisted up and destroyed I didn't see. At that point he calls Toro and reserves another belt and says he'll be back next Monday to fix it. Later that day he calls me and says he's sorry and that he'll fix it to make it right but I'm going to have to pay $30 for the new belt. I agreed to pay $30. Monday comes and goes, he doesn't show. No call, nothing. More time goes by and he calls me later in the week or the next week asking if I will be around on Wednesday. I tell him I'm only around on Mondays unless it's after 5, so he says can you leave it out. I tell him it's always out and that he can get to it in my backyard anytime. He says he'll be there Wednesday to fix it. Doesn't show. Doesn't call. I call him on Monday and he says he got the part on Saturday (What happened to the next day when he fixed it or last Wednesday when he was supposed to be there) and he would be here later Monday or first thing on Tuesday. Didn't show, didn't call. Wednesday I was about to call him and he calls and says I'll be there in a little while to get it done. Doesn't show. I was writing him a text to ask for a partial refund and to go our separate ways if he doesn't want to do it when he calls. This time I'm questioning why he would treat a customer like this. He's coming up with all the times and dates he guarantees he's going to be there and flaking out. He says it's raining and I don't have a covered area. A mobile lawnmower repairman in Vanouver, WA that doesn't have a plan for rain. I said I have a fully covered back patio which is 15 feet from my driveway and he says he would be too far away from his tools. I tell him this is the last time I'm giving him a chance to show up or I'm just calling it off. He agrees. He calls me at 6:45 this morning and tells me after reflecting on our conversation last night, he's gonna have to charge me more to put the belt on. I say how much again, he says as cheap as possible. I told him that wasn't good enough and he says $60. So I again let him know how I felt about him flaking 5 or 6 times, which he says he didn't flake. That this is a terrible way to run a business and forget it, I'll just buy a new mower. He then says I'll just refund you all your money, He'll send me a check in the mail cause I'm a piece of sh*t and hung up on me.
