I took the Web Development Immersive coarse at GA Austin in the summer of 2015, and I consider it one of the best career decisions and one of the greatest experiences of my life. For thirteen weeks, from April to July, I spent most days working here, learning the ins and outs of full-stack web development. The teachers are excellent! If you make it into a class with Sean, Mike, or Matt, then count yourself lucky--they are all great teachers and quality gentleman. Danielle, the regional director for GA, from day one made me feel quite at home in the community there, and Nicole in Outcomes was there for us after the program ended, cheering us on as we underwent the horror of the job application process. The space itself is so conducive to career development. WeWork, the co-working space that GA-ATX is nested in, is a not only whole lot of fun, it also has a bunch of tech companies and a ton of friendly social-mixing events. The network that you create there is easily one of the best features of the program. Other pros to the office include: excellent views of downtown Austin, a clean kitchen with an endless supply of fresh coffee, private phone nooks, a game room, a ping pong room (if you need to relieve stress), and awesome interior decoration inspired by the films of Wes Anderson. The one downside is the parking. GA being situated in downtown Austin--a rather crowded and popular city--makes it rather difficult to find long-term parking if you are commuting from the suburbs like I was. Hopefully GA works out a deal with the building's parking garage by the time you consider joining them, but if not, the City of Austin has a great commute program called Park & Ride, so you can park your car and take the bus downtown: https://www.capmetro.org/parkandride/ Overall, for myself and my peers, GA ATX was a thoroughly a positive experience. General Assembly is the place to go if you want to learn new skills or enhance skills you already have. It's fairly new to the Austin area, but it has already garnered a significant reputation among Austin employers. I took the User Experience Design Immersive (UXDI, ten weeks, full-time) program this summer, and I was blown away with what the program offered. First off, they provided an Amazon giftcard for the textbooks that I needed for the class (wish that my college education had provided that!). They provided a delicious lunch pretty much once a week, bringing in well-known practitioners in the UX field to speak: Jared Spool, Dave Malouf, and Stacey Chang. Being so involved in the industry ensures that their curriculum always stays up to date, and having many campuses worldwide expands the resources beyond what other immersive courses in Austin or elsewhere may offer. In addition to their highly competent instructors, GA provides a career coach (called an Outcomes Producer) to assist in the job search process. She may nag you to write a Yelp review, but she is invaluable to those who are looking to transition into the career field which was taught in their course. GA strongly encourages attending meet ups during the course to expand your personal network, and hosts many events that allow you to get involved with people who are already working in Austin. This is vital to the job search process - I started getting traction on my job search through LinkedIn even before I graduated, just through getting connected with other UXers in the Austin area. After researching different coding bootcamps, I found that General Assembly was the best fit for me. As someone who their fair share of teaching oneself the fundamentals using Codecademy, Code School and other free online resources, I felt the need to have a more structured curriculum. Fortunately, GA came at the perfect time for me to make the big commitment to commence my journey into learning Web Development full time. The curriculum was stupendously structured starting off with basic git and cli with HTML, CSS and Javascript. Then we progressed to the back-end of things learning Ruby on Rails and Node.js. The material covered is extensive, but it really is amazing how much you can learn in such a limited amount of time. The beauty of programming is that one is always learning! The instructors were all incredibly knowledgeable and enthusiastic to share their experience. I appreciate the candor from each instructor and their ability to convey complex subjects in a pragmatic and understandable manner. It also greatly helped having 3 nights of office hours per week. My fellow peers were all equally amazing, ambitious and determined which made for a wonderful environment to learn in! I now have several wonderful friends that I can always look to for help and to grab a beer with! Thus with the culmination of an excellent curriculum, excellent instructors and wonderful peers, GA_ATX gets my highest recommendation. read more

There's a bunch of technology boot camps around after research General Assembly stood out. I can say with a solid background with back-end and front-end development where I can build on that and advance my skills. We were exposed HTML5, CSS3, JS, JQuery, Ruby, Rails, Backbone, Node, GitHub, PostgreSQL, SQLite, MongoDB, Grunt, Bower. My instructors were great, one could see the passion they had to teach code. I enjoyed office hours with them and learned a lot along the way. My classmates were from all different backgrounds, amazing people to learn from, building a connecting that will last all one's career is priceless. General Assembly has a great sense of community and giving back which can't be found anywhere. One of the most important aspects is the career services that helps me with setting up my portfolio as well as introducing me to the right approach to the Tec Indestry. I recommend anyone to give GA a shot and attend their happy hours to learn more how they can benefit from their programs offered. read more

I am signed up for General Assembly's Web Development Immersive course and just wanted to share how happy I am with the people I've dealt with so far. The application and interview process was very smooth and pleasant. After your application, you'll go through a phone interview with a recruiter. This is to sort of see what you think you might be getting into, and to see if you would even fit in their program. You'll get a lot of information here. Next, you'll set up a meeting at the campus with at least one of the instructors. I met with Sean, and we went a little more in-depth as to how the course will pan out, and what I did for the little sample page they'll have you build. The important thing to me is how everyone at GA that I met really believes in what they're doing here, and that does make me confident in their program. As a former student in the Web Development Immersive course, I now have the skills to create meaningful web applications. I graduated from GA's User Experience Design Immersive in July. It was the best decision I have made for my career thus far! As far as I know, it is the only true immersive program for UX Design in the Austin area, teaching the fundamentals of user research, usability testing methods, and some visual design, and front-end programming. After working for 3 years as a "full stack" employee at a large company and small startup, I was left without a defined area of focus for my career. GA allowed me to take control of my career trajectory and get a crash course in UX design at an affordable price. Thanks to their financing options, I was able to focus on the course without stress. I graduated from the GA Front End Web Development at the end of the summer of 2015. It was amazing. I learned so much in 10 weeks AND produced great results. If you are really motivated to change your career path, GA will give you all that is humanly possible to make a switch. I took the UX Design Immersive after completing an MA in communication technologies, but GA was the real skill builder I was looking for. Instructors build modules that are highly practical without sacrificing time for in-depth conversations about the industry and theory. They know what they're doing, and their biggest assets are the dedicated UX pros they find as instructors. I graduated this summer in GA's User-Experience Design Immersive. Awesome community, great instructors, and useful resources. The GA-Austin team was very helpful from beginning to end.
