Unacceptable Experience at Philly Fitness (2077 Ridge Avenue)…read more I'm a Wellhub member, and Philly Fitness is listed as one of their partner gyms. Today, I visited the Ridge Avenue location and had one of the worst experiences I've ever had at a fitness facility. Upon arrival, I was denied access, even after presenting the app properly. The staff was completely unprepared and uninformed about how the Wellhub system works. They looked confused, showed zero professionalism, and made me feel extremely unwelcome. Then, they called the manager, who was shockingly rude and told me to leave immediately with no clear explanation. I was publicly embarrassed, treated with disrespect, and made to feel as if I was trying to sneak in without permission -- even though I had every right to be there as a Wellhub member. Not only was I denied a service I pay for, but I was also humiliated in front of others due to the total lack of training and professionalism of the entire team. This gym should not be listed on Wellhub if they're not prepared to treat members with basic respect. Absolutely unacceptable.

But the good kind of sore? I took Emily's 7:30 am boot camp class and while the playlist was straight fire, my thighs were also on fire. We were a small group, so we were able to all get personal attention on form. Emily had laid out what we were going to do and made use of the timers, so I didn't have to count down the seconds myself. We used lots of different equipment (kettlebells, weights, jump ropes, ergs) and it made the 45 minutes go by a lot faster than I usually find at these types of classes. The space is huge, literally an open box, with lots of equipment. It seems some people just stop by and use the equipment, and they also have classes. 10 packs come out to $14 a class and 20 packs $12. They also have a 21 days for $49 pack for new members (which is a great deal) and other student and military discounts. 3x a week is $90 and (this is how they get you at the Movie theater with popcorn sizes) for only an extra $15 you can get unlimited (with 6 month commitment). For a bit extra you can get all access passes. But before you box Open Box into the Crossfit box, check out the upstairs yoga studio! Unlike many gyms where the yoga class is in the same room and its very difficult to feel zen, the yoga studio here is set off, sound proofed, painted a calming color, and has great manduka mats and blocks. I did a private workshop with Emily here and my friends and I had such a good time, she's great at teaching inversions and super encouraging! Open up your mind (and wallet) to Open Box, and you may just open up your heart to them, along with, probably, your hips.

I just happen to live nearby so this is the best resource available. They've got a good range of memberships available. I'm usually staying on the 3-month membership so there's repeated intervals of getting motivated again to make good use of the money I spend. There's three floors here. First floor is mostly the lobby, but also some locker rooms, squash courts, and the pool. Upstairs is the main gym area, including the rooms where classes take place, basketball court, rock wall, and indoor track. If you come over the course of an academic quarter, you'll notice the ebb and flow across time of day and know exactly when midterms and finals seasons are. Suddenly it's a lot easier to get a squat rack for some reason. Things are kept pretty clean for the amount of traffic that comes through, especially student traffic, and the students who frequent are pretty good at re-racking correctly and wiping down benches after use. Membership team here has always been helpful! For some reason, they have limited hours on when you can process membership payments and renewals, but usually it's not a huge issue to get it done. On the whole it's a decent gym for the price. Though I'm no expert, but it's more than enough for me!

I can't believe it's taken me this long to write this review--I've attended over 200 Barry's…read moreclasses across nine different studios with 60 instructors, and Philly has quickly become one of my favorites. While my most frequented location is Noho from my NYC chapter, Philly is home now, and I'm grateful for this studio. Barry's is the gold standard of fitness classes in its size category (global presence). The workouts are consistently challenging, the music is always on point, and the instructors are fantastic at reading the room. They push and support when necessary, creating the perfect balance of motivation and intensity. One of the things I love most about Barry's is the community. There's something special about knowing you can walk into a studio in any city worldwide and get the same high-quality workout, clean amenities, and a welcoming vibe. The Philly studio delivers on that front. A key differentiator for Barry's workout is the running portion. I truly believe running makes the workouts significantly more effective, and the Woodway treadmills are unbeatable--they have lower impact, are smooth, and are fun to run on. The studio is top-tier--always spotless, with well-maintained lockers (with locks!) and a fuel bar that makes post-workout refueling easy (shoutout to the delicious shakes). The Barry's app is also well-designed, making it easy to book classes and understand the daily focus areas. I also appreciate the diversity of trainers and workout styles--each instructor brings something unique while staying true to the Barry's experience. While I haven't purchased any apparel yet, I love that Barry's partners with great brands and consistently offers high-quality gear. Most importantly, Barry's Philly is diverse, inclusive, welcoming, and always striving to improve. I'll keep coming back and continue to be a Barry's evangelist. If you're thinking about trying it, do it! You won't regret it.

Went for the first time this AM and brought my two cousins who are on the newer side to CrossFit. As someone who travels quite a bit and visits a lot of CrossFit boxes, I can tell you that Crossfit Rittenhouse definitely measures up. I'm in Philly a few times a year, and this will definitely be my go-to box. As an aside, I found that a lot of Philly-area boxes do NOT make it easy to sign up for classes online. Rittenhouse made it easy through their website - helps to know you have a spot secured in a class before you show up, and nice to not have to sign a bunch of forms when walking in the door trying to amp up for a workout. My last day at the YMCA!…read more The YMCA Director Ronna Kassel decided months ago to lock access to 2 of their bathrooms on the gym floor, forcing all class participants and gym users to walk to the other side of the gym to the two dirty bathrooms there or go downstairs stairs to the locker room. Unfortunately, on busy days there is a wait to use the bathroom on the gym floor or you have to find a staff member to unlock the bathroom, If someone is actually available. There is NO gym supervisor on the gym floor. If no one is available, then you just have to wait or go to another floor. I emailed the Ms. Kessel over the weekend and no response. When I went to the gym this afternoon, there were senior citizens coming out one of the classes trying to open the locked bathroom doors. They were frustrated too. When I went to the front desk to complain last Friday, the receptionist " Katherine" started to argue in front of staff that the doors were not locked, although she works part time on another floor and rarely comes to the gym. The YMCA needs to do better! Smh
