She phoned ahead to confirm it was open and a table available, which luckily it was. The restaurant sits within a lovely surrounding of trees, fields and poppies. The restaurant itself has wonderful restored brick ceilings and tile floor with a beautiful fireplace. There were several other guests there when we arrived; a work crew out for a filling noon meal and a couple lingering, as everyone does in Europe, over their wine and dolcé. We each ordered one of the specials and each ate every bite! The gnocchi erbette (herbs) in bolognese was divine! The taglietele with melenzana (eggplant) was delicious! (the Mr. says so!) The bread perfecto! As we had more traveling to do we did not try the wine but we did have an espresso!! that was yummy! I led a culinary tour group in the area, and one of our dinners was here. It was the highlight of the week, and nobody stopped talking about it. That was then. This year we have been back several times with more groups, and the opposite has been true. Rather than everyone raving about how wonderful it was, it was widely considered the most underwhelming meal of each week. Considering the Michelin star, it made it that much more difficult to swallow. The sad reality is that it is our understanding that this restaurant will be closing soon due to an increase in rent. As such, it is my impression that their passion was gone, and they simply didn't continue to try and earn their reputation. Unfortunately, the last months of this establishment will carry on with the chef, so it makes little sense to me. Either way, while it is still here, I would strongly suggest it be avoided.

It was the perfect amount of preparation, refined tastes, and ambience for a great Italian countryside experience. The food was perfect and tasted great without feeling over the top and the staff was extremely friendly and attentive. The venue was a former castle and the only regret we had was not having enough time/room to do the wine tastings here as well. There were also extremely clean restrooms to change in if you wanted to bring some nicer clothes to change into after a day of wine tasting. I would highly recommend a stop here to cap off a trip to this part of Italy.

The door was open and we poked our heads in to ask if they had any open reservations. The owner told us to come in and stay, that they were pretty busy with reservations but he had a couple seats open and with the weather we shouldn't go back out. He wasn't wrong, by 7:40 the place was basically full. A couple of individuals wandered in and he did his best to create a communal table to serve them. When we arrived one waiter was still hand writing the menus for the day and the owner was busy readying the wine selection. They brought us a menu, the waiter spoke English and was able to describe the 10 things on the rough menu. When we asked if they had rabbit he jokingly remarked 'no, none were running around the place today'. We opted for a 1/2 bottle of barolo, a portion of tajarin ragú (spaghetti with meat sauce), Milanese and brasato (traditional stewed veal). As per norm plenty of bread was served. The entrees came with sautéed vegetables. The brasato was good, meat was soft and flavorful and sitting at this long, wooden, communal table I could completely envision eating this as a traditional dish. The tajarin was perfect for my taste. It was not sauce heavy so if you prefer a meat sauce like that this is not for you. I loved how the homemade spaghetti and the meat really stood out with a very small amount of sauce to bind the two. The Milanese was great. Pounded thin and pan fried in butter, the flavor was tremendous. Living in Italy could really make me like veal! We did not get dessert but the waiter brought us some local appertif to try. It was very sweet but with bitters, an interesting mix. People watching in this place was great. I got a lot of amusement out of it and it was just the sort of place I was looking for in Italy. A place where people gather, are loud, laugh and enjoy home cooked food without frills.

It helps for sure being surrounded by such amazing produce, but, my mind was blown by the attention to detail and sheer variety of the menu. We (literally) bumped into to chef when we were leaving, he looked like a mad genius which makes sense as you can almost feel his obsessiveness in each and every bite.
