In the West Catskills, finding any "contractor" who shows up for a bid, follows up with the bid,…read moreand actually shows up for work, is a rare trifecta. Having maintained a summer cottage in Long Eddy for 40 years, I've had to rely on my own skills and sweat. But now, I'm just too old and too busy and it's back to playing Russian Roulette with old-timers who've retired, and young spunks who are moving out to the cities. Well, sports fans, I'm here to tell you some good news, and I hope this guy knows how to grow a business to handle the hundreds of folks in my stage of life! That guy is Caleb Lavelle of Lavelle Construction out of Honesdale, Pa, serving clients in PA and NY. Caleb shows up for the bid. He kicks in some great ideas and cost-saving alternatives that make you wonder how a guy so young-looking can know so damn much! It's a thrill just to watch him pitch a bid! Then, in 48 hours, I have the paperwork, complete with some alternatives that let me push and pull the deal to my exact needs, time and money. Then - and here's the best part for any contractor in upstate NY - Caleb SHOWS UP - often when I'm not there - always with the right crew, tools and supplies and, DAMN! He gets the job done. The first task was helping me to decide if I should restore and old 1950s garage, or demolish it because it had a faulty foundation.. We went with demolish. But Caleb INCLUDED the foundation restoration, moving 3 cords of cut logs from the garage to my house's back porch, sorting of recycled timbers, and removal of all debris - WHILE I WAS AWAY. I'm so happy, I'm looking around for something else for him to do! (Now what WAS it, that I was putting off for three years - Oh yeah, some floor joists!) (How about a mini-house where the garage was?) (What about sanitation?) Oh - do not hire Caleb, please for at least a year! I need him too much! (Just joking of course.)

He discussed his ideas and he seemed like he was knowledgeable. He said he would draw up a plan and estimate and come back in a week. He was supposed to show up @10:30. I waited for about an hour and left texts and voicemails. Finally, a woman texted and said they would reach out to Jeff. I got a call back from his partner Joe who said Jeff was on the eastern end of LI. (I am in Lindenhurst, western L.I. Jeff 's company is in Lindenhurst). He said Jeff's truck broke down. I asked why someone didn't call and tell me that he was stuck. His partner said Jeff's phone died. Also, I asked Joe how he was able to call Jeff if Jeff's phone died. Joe replied that he used a walkie talkie. I asked why Jeff then didn't tell Joe on the walkie talkie to tell us he wasn't coming. My husband and I thought the excuse was weak. We made new arrangements for Jeff to bring plans & estimates for the following Friday but he never showed. That is after I sent a text with the date and time so he wouldn't forget and he never showed up the second time. Again I sent voicemail and texted and again I got no call back. I never got a chance to see what kind of work Jeff or Joe do but at the end of the day if someone can't give you the respect in returning your calls, if you do use them they won't come back if you have a problem. It does not matter how good their work is. Jeffs company had a 5 star review but I am learning that perhaps those reviews can come from friends and family. Remember there are so many landscapers on Long Island to choose from. I have to thank the JRS Landcare for showing me early on how ill mannered they are. Hopefully you get one that shows you curtesy and respect.
