ok, so this is not a bad review. I actually like the salon and the people who work there. relived too when I learned they renovated instead of closing down. I'm just a little let down with the result of my blowout. the stylist and my time there was great but my hair didn't feel like my hair after. it felt sticky and slightly crunchy like barbie hair. My hair usually has a lot of movement and softness, but left with stiff hair. I know hairspray wasn't used by request too. Giovanni's skills with color and men's cuts are the best I've ever experienced. I came to him with damaged platinum hair and he has helped me every time maintain my color, my cut, and get my hair back to its original length and strength. He takes the time needed to make my hair look it's best. The salon is impeccably kept with an extensive list of services. The wine is also a lovely touch, especially when getting your hair bleached for a couple of hours. The front of house staff has always been helpful in arranging my appointments. Dane has been cutting my hair for more than 10 years. He use to be at a salon in East Village and I followed him to Gemini 14. He is a master of his craft. I had not gotten my hair cut professionally since the beginning of the pandemic and it looked awful when I walked in. Dane, as always, gave me a great cut and I left feeling like a new woman. He takes the time to listen and get to know your personality so the cut is always what you are looking for and it suits you. I also like the new salon. Won't let them cut my dogs hair! Rude nasty people! Just tried calling to get to inquire about coloring curly hair and the woman that took my call was only interested in booking an appointment for a hair cut. Never even mentioned getting a cut. She then left me on hold for over 5 minutes for someone else to pick up and put me on hold again. Third woman picked up my call and I explained about what I needed and she also wanted to give me an appointment for a cut! I tried explaining that I wanted the top person in salon who handles color for curly hair only and she hung up on me! Nasty, nasty women work at this salon, you could not pay me enough to go to this salon! What happen to good customer service! read more

I booked a morning appointment with Ariane and showed up early to the appointment. She refused to dye my hair because she said it would take 5/6 hours and she had other clients to work on today. First of all, how unprofessional to accept an appointment, and then make me waste my time to come and not do my hair. She knew before hand that I had dark hair as I'm sure the person who books the appointment let's the stylist know. She then quoted me on $500 or $600 because my hair is so long and I'd be there all day. They wanted me to book an appointment on a Wednesday, as if people don't have jobs. I said I can only do the weekend and then they wanted me to leave my card so they can charge me if I cancel 24 hours before the appointment. Uh no. They're not worth the hype. Clearly they're unprofessional and if you can't get my hair done how I'd like within a day, and just pushing a customer away, you're disgusting. I went to another salon and was there from 10am-3pm and got my hair how I wanted for only $160. Not only that, but while my hair was getting bleached, the stylist and the other salon I went to was able to work on more than one person. Nah, I'm good. I'll never come back to Gemini 14. I can't say enough about how wonderful he is as a hairstylist and human. It is a joy to see him for my bi-annual cuts. I would see him more often but he is so skilled that my hair grows out perfectly without needing to see him more frequently. BUT I kind of wish I could because spending an hour or so having him cut my hair is like spending time with an old friend (which he now is!) who truly makes you look your best. Giovanni has been my go-to for a few years now when it comes to getting the best haircut of my life. Ever since he started cutting my hair, I've been receiving compliments from friends and strangers alike. Can't recommend him enough. Was so sad to hear he'd left his previous salon, but was so happy when he told me he moved to Gemini 14. Of course, I followed him without question. Not only does he still give the best cuts, but, for the first time in my life, I decided to ask him about coloring my beard. In the 5+ years of going to Gemini, I've never gotten a haircut here. I walk in, check in with the receptionist (which are always very friendly) and walk down the stairs to my waxing appointment. I can't tell you how many compliments I have gotten on my eyebrows, after Lana is done with them. Most people think I get them threaded, because she is so precise. She's also the ONLY person I have or will go to for a Brazilian. She just makes the whole experience, which isn't that fun, very enjoyable... and she's quick about the whole thing. So hysterically funny, but so professional. I have to admit, I really tend to dislike perfectionists. Here now, for a limited time only, I present my thoughts on Gemini 14, circa March of 2012: First of all, the salon itself is wonderfully chic. Contemporary and cool and I absolutely love the ambiance. If they brought me a mimosa while I'm wait I'd add that it'd be just perfect. (Hopefully someone at Gemini is reading this.) My hair cutting experience has been with two stylists, both of whom I cannot speak highly enough of. I've been cut by both Christian and Bradley Moreland. They both exude talent and confidence in their work. They're both immensely entertaining to talk with as well. Never have I left feeling anything short of perfect. For that I'd like to thank them both. Men's haircuts run about 60 bux. Not bad in the grand scheme of New York prices. You can bet I've made this my go-to salon. I was referred here by a friend who comes twice a week for a blowout. I made an appointment on a Wednesday for Saturday. On Saturday morning I received a call indicating that my stylist would have to cancel and they wanted to rebook me for the next day. I had plans Saturday night so was annoyed because I had planned on my hair getting done, but they were able to rebook me for Monday which happened to be New Years Eve so I was okay with it. On Sunday they called again saying that they had to cancel my appointment. They offered to reschedule for Sunday, but the times they had didn't work for me. Honestly, first impressions are everything. With all the salons and competition in NYC I don't feel they deserve a third chance and would rather take my business elsewhere. read more

Oh my god, Lior is amazing. I was recommended to him by a friend and have always walked away looking and feeling fabulous. He's one of those people you can ask: 'What do you think?' and he'll go right to it. My only problem with the place is that it is pretty pricey....but definitely not as pricey as some of the other salons in the city. A haircut and highlights will cost you around $300-- so be prepared to drop some dough. That being said, I would HIGHLY recommend this salon. Everyone there is absolutely lovely and you get an amazing cut/color/etc. And with the location, you regularly see celebrities walking around...always a plus :) read more

I've been following Delores for ten years now ~ through three salons, a baby (mine, haha!) and Gemini 14 is by far the best salon she's landed at yet. It's stylish, the staff is friendly and the mani, pedi, hair removal services are all very professional. But back to Deloris. We started with grey coverage, then moved to highlights. It took a lot of handholding to get me to highlight my hair ~ I didn't want it to look very brassy and also didn't want to further commit to increased maintenance expenses. She was born int o a hair dressing family and has been professionally performing blow outs at her parent's shop since she was a pre teen. My hair is long and coats. And Deloris is the only one who can tame it straight, with a curl on the bottom, no flat iron. I've had blow outs on vacation, while traveling for business, etc. and I have never had more beautiful hair t Han she. I get up from Deloris' hair. She is simply gifted and I just love being in her chair. The salon also has a rewards program and I receive a free service (cut, color, blow dry, etc. ) very fifth visit or so. Flew into NY to elope and had scheduled a cut and style with Christian at the recommendation of Stephen the Salon Guy on YouTube. He surpassed all of my expectations. He didn't want to cut a lot off as he liked what I had going on and wanted to "keep it me" as he said. Literally the best cut and style I've ever had. I wish I could get this level of service and skill back home. Any time we make it up to NYC for vacation I'll make sure to fit time in for Christian again as he is well worth the trip. I was desperate in getting bangs and I didn't know where to go. Came across this place on yelp's nearby search and decided to give it shot. I called first to make sure there were stylists available for walk ins, the girl over the phone was very friendly, told me I can stop by any time before 7. She also told me it would be $15 for cutting the bangs only and if I would like the whole blow out it would be additional $45. It was pleasant talking to her and she didn't rush me off the phone, that's a plus! I really liked the decor and lighting of this place, felt cozy and homey with the dimmed lights. I was quickly greeted by the receptionist and she told me Chris was available for me. By the way, this was my first time going to a non asian hair salon for a haircut. Anyhow, Chris was awesomely friendly, he took his time talking to me to understand exactly what I want. What I really liked about him was he took "baby steps". He first cut half of my bangs to see which way I preferred. He spent his time cutting it and making sure it was even. Probably took 30 minutes on my bangs. In the end, I was happy. Of course I need to get used to it because bangs can be difficult! I definitely would consider coming back here if I ever want a hair cut. In the meantime, I'm continuing to let my hair grow and grow! read more

Everyone at Gemini 14 seems very friendly, but the real reason I go there is for Dolores! She is an amazing stylist and colorist. I've been going to her for 6 years and I won't let anyone else touch my hair! I usually get some variation on the graduated bob. Dolores is magical! I constantly get compliments on my hair. I do sometimes let it grow out a little in between cuts and she cuts the layers in my bob so well that you can't even really tell I need a haircut. I prefer my hair shorter though, so Dolores helps me maintain my look. I'm a brunette and usually stick to brown, black or dark red. Last fall, she did these amazing autumn highlights that I liked to call Autumn Pumpkin Spice Sunrise :D it was a combo of brown, deep burgundy, burnt orange, and a golden color. So pretty and perfect for fall. I showed her a picture and then described the spin I wanted on it, and she brought it to life! When people complimented my highlights, I would say "You like it? It's Autumn Sunrise." (like in Ghost haha) On top of being brilliant, Dolores is a sweetheart! read more

I'm writing this review a little late since I got my hair done on Wednesday (sorry!). So, a little backstory on my hair. I had gotten it professionally done with light brown/blonde balayage, but I had gotten so sick of the color that I became impatient and dyed it with box black hair dye. Let me tell you, that was one of the biggest mistakes of my LIFE. It gave my hair no dimension, made it very brittle and dry, and completely washed me out. I hated it so much and immediately regretted it. So naturally I panicked. After a week of trying to get used to the color, i couldn't take it anymore. I called Gemini 14 this past Wednesday with a desperate attempt to be squeezed in that evening at 6:30pm. Luckily, Lola decided to take on the job even though she knew I wanted to go back to a brown color. When I got there she told me how long the process would take (especially because it was box dye) but said she'd be up for it, if I was. Which I obviously agreed to lol. Essentially we had to bleach the entire head to lift the ugly black color, and then tone it a few times to get the desired look. It took hours, and we even went past the closing time at 9pm. Lola did not complain once or show any impatience which I really appreciated because I did feel bad for keeping her there for SO long. She was so sweet, understanding, easy to talk to and I felt comfortable with letting her take care of the hot mess that was my hair. She explained that box dye is horrible for your hair and the ingredients in it can be damaging. I swore never to touch it again lmao. Needless to say, I am EXTREMELY happy with the result and thankful to Lola!!!! I will need to go back to tone my hair every 5-6 weeks but it's a small price to pay. This review is mainly about Danielle Golburgh, a wonderful colorist. I have been going to Danielle for a year and a half now and she has never failed to do a fantastic job!!! I have very thick, curly hair, the kind of stuff most colorists and stylists hate to work on. Many have started out enthusiastic, but over time get tired of doing it and they get sloppy. Not Danielle. She has remained interested and continues to color my hair exceptionally well. The color looks great!!!! Danielle is truly a gifted professional. I have seen a lot of people leave her chair, and everyone's color looks amazing. She manages to give people natural color that is at the same time not dull or boring. In addition to being remarkably talented, Danielle is nice. She is easy to spend the time with, smart, good humored, calm and fun too. I know that the salon has been written about in magazines for having celebrity clientele. I think this speaks to quality service because it certainly doesn't speak to a pretentious environment. The salon staff are always nice and genuinely friendly; Carl at the front desk is so kind, and so bright, and he is also great at getting appointments made without confusion. Gina does a great job washing my not easy to wash hair, as does Suzi. I have also interacted with other stylists and staff, even the owners. Everyone is nice and pleasant, and I am not a celebrity. Walked in to this salon last Wednesday around 3pm for a spontaneous blow out on a HOT New York City day. Was quoted 45 for a wash and blow. The salon is long, large and modern. It was a nice ambience and staff were all friendly. Spacious and clean. My stylist was Danielle. She was friendly and nice. I asked for a blow out with lots of volume and curls. I said my hair doesn't hold curls over time so I might need an iron to emphasis the curls. I then was led to get my hair washed. When I got back to the chair, Danielle said that to use the iron would be an extra $20 so it would be $65 not the $45 that I was quoted upon entering. I politely declined because $20 is unreasonable IMO simply for an iron. I do not have frizzy or ethnic hair that needed so much extra work to warrant that price. Not to mention most salons only charge $10 for iron. For $65 I rather go to a high end salon for a blow out, not an establishment like this. Furthermore, the blow out was mediocre at best and within 2 hours the shape and form was nonexistent. Danielle did tell me that I have great hair that is easy to work with. Unfortunately, I would never return again. Perhaps they do other services well but I tend to think that a blow out is a good indicator of whether they are skilled in other more advance areas of hair dressing .. If you can't do a good blow out ( I.e., basic skill) then I question your other abilities. For blow outs I rather visit Dry bars in NYC or Da Pietro. read more

Cons: I am not a celebrity so I found the $90 treatment and blowdry to be pricey. Also, I've never been to a salon that doesn't offer refreshments for clients who are waiting. I went in here for a brow wax and was pleasantly surprised! Its hard to find a good place in the city that is both affordable and a good wax... this place does it. I have had my brows done by Lana and Tamara, both are very good. not the sloppy rush job you'll find at so many other places. my only complaint is that its a little cramped but worth it for great eyebrows! read more

I went to Gemini 14 with a Bloomspot deal, as I was looking for a new salon for cuts and the reviews on Yelp were good. The person cutting my hair spent a lot of time trying to sell their smoothing treatment (as I mentioned I previously had Japanese straightening), though I clearly stated I wasn't interested. My hair is pretty simple, slightly layered but long layers, and I mentioned that I have trouble finding someone who doesn't cut the front too short so that it looks squared off and is hard to manage. She proceeded to do exactly that, though she styled it well so it was the next day before I realized the front layers were much shorter than I wanted. I had to go to another salon to even it out.
