Salon part of Gemi

I don't know what's not to love about this place. It's a fab salon, a hair product warehouse of sorts AND a cafe staffed with super friendly human beings. If getting a barista-made latte while having your tresses conditioned and your scalp massaged isn't worth at least four stars, I don't know what is. I should add that I'm quite a coffee fiend, and the latte served was right up there with some of the best I've had in "proper" coffee shops. They've got the mean looking espresso machines to prove their point. And the more or less standard leaf designs they do with the milk froth on specialty coffee...while in scalp massage heaven...I had to say that again. I have no idea what's up with the two star reviews. Here's the deal. Get on their loyalty program, spend $250 on hair products (or it might be on all products and services) and get a free deep conditioning treatment as described above. If that seems like a big amount of money, I'm telling you, it's not. If like me, you use and abuse your hair, you WANT to use salon-grade hair products so you're not left with straw for strands when you're 30. It's not all marketing, there's a reason why salon products are a bit pricier. They use better quality ingredients and higher concentrations of the good stuff to make your hair last through your lifetime. I've been a customer 7 years running and though I live in Vancouver now, I always come back to the island to stock up on hair products. You'll find their prices reasonable and their products come in larger sizes than your usual salon sized products. The staff are super knowledgeable and will walk you through your hair needs IF you need them to. In my experience, they've never followed me around with eagle eyes silently pressuring me to "buy". In my world, when you just want to browse, simply tell the salesperson that and they will leave you alone (exceptions are made for homeless bums milling around Johnson in which case, they will follow you around the store to make sure you do not steal!). I left there yesterday with the most touchable hair ever and a wicked blow dry. I swear I went in with horse hair and came out with human hair again. I can't imagine how good their other salon services would be!

This is my fav salon in Victoria. My stylist is awesome (she's the owner and only hires excellent…read morepeople so I'm sure the other stylists are great too...she's a former Aveda instructor). I always feel like I get great value compared to other salons. I also love it because they don't have extremely loud annoying music playing in the background. I can actually have a conversation with my stylist (who does the best up-do ever!). It's clean with a nice feminine French modern ambience. But it's not pretentious or overly trendy or intimidating. They don't up-sell their products or push the sales but they have nice organic products. It's a very comfortable caring experience and my hair has never looked better! I really have no complaints. It's right beside Jam cafe snd close to Chinatown so you can go for a bite too!

I feel slightly bad for writing this review because I feel that lavish is a very nice salon but…read morethat my hair experience there could have been better. I went there yesterday morning on the hunt for a professional to fix my disastrous highlights that were Orange yellow and Brown. I decided to not damage my hair any more than I had to but to let someone fix it so I could repair it from then on. I was greeted by a really nice receptionist who said there was a stylist availible right then. I met Angela who was very bubbly and pleasant. I discussed how I got into the hair predicament I was in and what I wanted to be done. She seemed to be on the same page of what I wanted, lighter ends darker base. I expressed that I didn't want really dark hair because my boyfriend doesn't find dark hair attractive and I want to be comfortable going from brassy strawberry blonde to a brown colour. She said what I needed was a Victoria Secret look and I was sold. She proceeded to apply a dark brown colour on my roots , but then surprised me when she began to apply it all over my hair. I thought she might leave my already light ends and focal highlights alone instead of dying and then bleaching them again. I felt that this would damage my hair considerably more, but she promised it wouldn't. As she applied the bleach she would pull apart my colour coated strands of hair and I knew then my hair was ripping. After waiting another hour or so , she rinsed me out and began to cut and style. The hair cut went well, she only cut my severely damaged ends and gave me more layers for volume. Then came the part that I felt was completely unnecessary. When styling someone, most hairdressers might consider that if your clients hair is clearly over processed and ripping because of excessive damage that they may have to be very gentle and light handed when brushing. I found Angela to be aggressive in her techniques and she seemed to be rushing because of an appointment she had arriving soon. I felt awkward and uncomfortable as she was yanking my hair so hard that my head was literally being pulled toward her. oddly enough as she was ripping my hair she mentioned that I may need to "baby" my hair which made me think why isn't she taking this into consideration? She dropped her brushes multiple times and even hit me in the head with the blowdryer. Needless to say my hair looked frizzy, dry and off. She tried to make my hair look less damaged by curling it half handedly, but it came out as a slight wave. The apron came off and I felt my hair. it felt almost worse than when I came in , and when I was shown the back of my head I noticed the bad placement of a lone light brown highlight. I paid the 168$ and did not tip as a way of saying I did not enjoy more than half of my experience, and when I got home I made sure to deep condition and promised from then on to always fix my hair disasters at home .
