If you have a large breed dog, I strongly recommend going elsewhere. I had been a client at this clinic for nearly a year, tolerating repeated rudeness from the front desk staff primarily because their prices were more affordable. However, my most recent experience made it clear that I could no longer justify staying. Whenever I brought in my German Shepherd, the front desk staff treated us with clear discomfort--making rude comments and acting as though they didn't want him there. In contrast, when I brought in my smaller dog (a Border Collie puppy), they were friendly, warm, and welcoming. The difference in treatment was stark and concerning. The final straw came when my German Shepherd became seriously ill late at night--he was weak, had pale gums, and was bleeding from his bottom. I contacted the on-call emergency vet, who advised me to monitor him overnight and bring him in first thing in the morning. When I called the clinic the next morning and relayed this to the front office, they dismissed my concerns and told me he was "fine." I stressed that he was not fine and requested that he be seen. The receptionist responded coldly, saying they would just put him in a kennel and that there was nothing more they could do. Despite explaining multiple times that I was following the on-call vet's instructions, I was ignored. Thankfully, I was able to get him into another clinic that welcomed large breeds and immediately recognized the urgency of his condition. They ended up saving his life. I was later told that had I waited any longer, he may have required emergency surgery--or worse. To be fair, the veterinarians themselves have always been professional and helpful during my visits. Unfortunately, the front desk staff consistently undermine that care with poor communication and, in my experience, biased and unprofessional behavior. I can no longer recommend this clinic, especially to owners of large breed dogs. I'm so upset to share what happened with Gem City. My dog got really hurt with bad puncture wounds, and even though she was struggling to breathe and super weak. It happened over the weekend so it wasn't regular hours so we called the people who work over the weekends for emergencies. We spoke with someone named Haley. She kept saying it wasn't serious enough to see her. They kept ignoring her symptoms all weekend. When she got worse, started throwing up, and wouldn't eat, and what we thought was bad bruising, we finally just brought her in, Haley just gave her antibiotics and wanted to send us home, but we insisted she stay because she was really not doing well. Later, they called us, glad we left her, and decided to keep her overnight on fluids as she got worse. Haley barely gave us any info, just saying it was bruising. The next day, we took her to CSU vet in Fort Collins, and they immediately told us that she was septic. Gem City should have caught this, especially after doing blood work. Their negligence and dismissive attitude led to our dog's death. If they had taken her condition seriously from the start, she might still be here. Avoid Gem City!! read more

Gem city cared for my dogs for the 8 years I lived in Laramie. I had to put them both down for health reasons. One dog had syncope he would pass out almost like a seizure and we tried working through it for several months but it just was not improving and max was really miserable his big brother moo is a miracle dog he was purchased from a back yard breeder in Utah and trained as a PTSD service dog professionally in Denver he had many issue over the years at one time in our travels he was almost bald from allergies or something I can't remember he was a high anxiety dog when he was working hated service work. When I moved to Wyoming I let him be a silly lab no more service work. He developed a lipoma that grew rapidly in a few months it was the size of a big grapefruit he started getting growths all over his body and he found it hard to get comfortable most of the time. He was a loyal friend who helped me get out and do things that without him paralyzing anxiety would keep me from doing. We decided to let him go with his brother Max the vet god bless her was so kind and let me just hold him until I was ready to let go. He got the first shot to sedate him and he was still standing on all 4 ten min later comforting me as I was falling apart. When the vet gave him the final dose he laid down beside me wagging his tail all I could say is I love you and never forget it moo. He passed away peacefully in my arms I got a plaster mold of his and max paw. A few days later I moved my family out of Wyoming to Flordia and I got a phone call from a florist saying they had a delivery for us from Gem City I was not able to receive the flowers because I had moved but the though warmed my heart and I am thankful for that moment of kindness. I'd recommend Gem City to anyone. They are good people. read more

i have used this vet service for many, many years, as a good customer. I have had some problems financially, but I have always paid off my balance(s). I have two new Afghan Hound puppies that need their second set of shots, but because I can not pay my entire balance of $121 plus the $100 for the shots and exam I am being refused service. Now I will have to find a new vet service so that my pups can get their second set of shots. This is no way to treat a customer of over 20 years. They will not help those of us who have suffered financial hardships, but who do finally pay their balances, though it might take a few months to do so. The only good thing I can say is that one of the vets did let me pay over time a balance when my one Afghan girl had pancreatic cancer. read more

I can not recommend Gem City Veterinary enough! We travel full time and realized our 5 month old puppy was sick as we were headed to Laramie. We looked up local vets and chose Gem City based on the reviews. They we're able to immediately diagnose that not only was our baby, Scout, sick, but she was critical and in multi-organ failure. She spent a week receiving intensive hospital care at Gem City. Every day was a fight, but Jamie and Dr Kelsie Speiser, never gave up on her. They provided around the clock care, coming on weekends, late at night and early mornings to check on her, administer meds, and make sure she was stable. Communication was constant and we received updates several times per day and were able to visit her whenever we wanted. I never questioned that she was in excellent, knowledgeable, and capable hands at all times. After 10 days, Scout has finally been discharged and hopefully, she is home for good. I believe 100% that Dr. Speiser and Jamie saved her life, and if we had taken her elsewhere, the outcome would've been entirely different. read more

Been a client for 14 years, with my Afghans. I was treated great up until about 1 1/2 years ago when my financial status became devastated and not by my actions. I informed GCV of the situation, and as soon as I could I started making payments. Since then I have been ostracized from everyone except the bookkeeper. I would always pay my account balance every month easily. However, now it is somewhat difficult to do so, but I still arrange my financials so I can make payments to get my account current ASAP! Yes, the ladies are extremely good at what they do, but don't treat a loyal client the way you are with me because of circumstances beyond my control. I.E., had an Afghan that had a stroke and they would not help me. Once the account is paid, don't know what I will do. I don't like being treated as if I have distemper, rabies or some other disease. read more

So, it's update time... for the update. I've now hard back form the vet (shockingly they called back) only to say that not only do they not know if my dog has cancer, they don't know what the state vet lab found and are "waiting to hear back form the vet lab" as to wheather or not the samples were event sent for the additional testing. During this discussion we also found that they failed to bill us, had the wrong payment info and are now "calling the card processor to see what the problem is" which I suppose means that I'll be getting a secon... third bill. ----- It's been about a month and the problems with this vet have only increased. My initial review said the surgery went well. It didn't. About 3 days later we had to rush the pup to a different vet (because Gem isn't open weekends) to have the surgical site cleaned, expressed and correctly stitched. Gem City left a pencil eraser sized hole in his head that began bleeding profusely once the swelling went down. They also didn't bother stitching up the subcutaneous tissue. Once the masses were removed they were sent to the local state vet lab for testing. The tests were nonconclusive and the vet lab wanted to send the masses to CSU Vet Oncology. This was a little over two weeks ago and having not heard back from them since we took the pup to get his stitches out (more on that debacle below), I've just called for an update. The doctor didn't know what was happening with the case because the other doctor decided to take over, apparently without updating any charts, notes or so much as leaving a sticky. So now I wait on a phone call that, if history is any indicator, will never come. This will be the fourth or fifth time they've failed to call us back. To be frank, Gem City Vet has failed us so many ways it's getting hard to keep track of the things that are major problems vs. minor annoyances. As for the stitches. We took him back to get the test results (still don't have) and get the stitches out at the same time. Both doctors were out so the vet techs attempted to remove the stitches. I say "attempted" because they literally gave up. Digging into the dogs head with a pair of dull scissors and a knife they removed a few stitches but reopened the wound. With the dog bleed all over they couldn't find the final stitch so they left it in assuring me it would dissolve. It hasn't and it clearly bothers him. So we'll be going back to the second vet again for that. Throughout this process the vet's office has failed entirely at calling us back, sending the masses to be tested, notifying us of the testing and now they have apparently lost the results. I will say they finally put some plastic up around the construction area in the lobby, but there is still pink insulation, rusty nails, and debris everywhere. This is not a safe place to bring your pets. Again. If you at all love your pets DO NOT bring them to Gem City! The staff is hateful and incompetent, the doctors are incapable of communication with anyone including themselves but especially the client and the facilities are a nightmare. This is not a vets office, it's a shame. You WILL regret visiting this vet. ----- Initial Review: 1/10/2017 The surgery for the pup seems to have gone well. The doctors were friendly and knowledgeable I think. However. The physical location is terrible. Getting out to them is a nightmare after a snow, never mind that the building is torn apart. There are construction materials all over the place including nails and other things like insulation and exposed wires that animals really shouldn't be around. I could forgive all of that if not for the angry old lady behind the desk. I have never in my life left a vet's office so angry and frustrated as I am right now. I will never go back and anyone who asks will get the exasperated shorthand of this review. They do good work so long as you don't mind being belittled and dismissed by the front desk staff. read more

The staff is extremely kind, and they are probably amazing with dogs and cats. However, they missed a serious dental issue in my rabbit after two appointments and x-rays under sedation. My rabbit had to see a different vet in Rock Springs who immediately diagnosed the problem and sent us to Jackson for a tooth trim surgery. By this point, my rabbit was literally starving to death her teeth were so bad. We may still lose my best friend because of a very simple misdiagnosis. I'm extremely upset with them. read more

These guys have been AMAZING! They comforted my daughter when she made the heartbreaking decision to put her pet rat down, even meeting with her after hours to try and save her beloved. This is the worse vet my pets have ever been too. I took the dog in for a skin disorder, and after examining him was told to put Neosporin on his body. The dog licked and ate the Neosporin, and went nuts keeping us up all night. I called Gem City and they said they would have the vet call me right away. Well she never did, so now we need to find another vet. They were also supposed to call and schedule the dog for laser treatment , again, no call. Very incompetent, I wouldn't recommend them even to my worst enemy. read more

This is the only vet that'll I will trust my dogs with in town. They are always kind and ready to help out when needed. They've always been very accommodating and have even let me leave my dog there while I worked once so I didn't have to go in for an unscheduled visit when my dog was sick. While he was there, they even played with him for the better part of the day and he was one happy tired pup when we got home. That's type of extra mile these folks go to for your pet. They've always been very upfront and have always helped me to make the best decisions for my animals. read more
