When I got back to California from my East Coast visit, there was a letter from the VA waiting for me. The letter said that the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center was my new "Home VA." Apparently, when I visited, they had to create a chart for me, but then they neglected to "kick my records" back to California. I went to my local VA and explained the situation, they punched a couple of keys, and they fixed the situation. If you are here as a visiting veteran, make sure that they send your records back to your home VA. Just a minor glitch, I would still use this VA again in a heartbeat. Thank you.

They are 55 miles away, but we go there. I trust their capability and appreciate the attention to my problems. The only issue I had was their obvious right wing leanings and pushy about religion- based on the TV channels always on, like FOX news and the 700 club. I find that offensive and complained about it. Now clickers are left out so patients can change it. Occasionally the older angry vets verbally express themselves quite loudly and offensively, but we just leave the area. The staff themselves are attentive, friendly, professional and helpful. Much appreciated.

I enjoyed my experience here compared to Wilkesbarre general hospital. Everyone swears by the deliciousness of the smoothie bar (I personally never got it tho). Beware this is trauma center so the ED can be very chaotic at times with long waits for beds but they get to you eventually based on the severity & level of care needed to make you feel better. The labor and delivery ward here is the really good compared to the others I've been to; it also has a Nicu for babies. (But if I had to choose a place to deliver, Geisinger CMC in Scranton labor and delivery is so much nicer but better suited for moms with uncomplicated pregnancies as they don't have a NICU.) My main downside to coming here was how far away the parking lot was & can be challenging to find a closer spot. But to help they do have shuttles that runs till about 4am & can pick you up and take up to the front of the hospital.

I was induced, couldnt get past 4cm dilated for 3 days, tried the foley balloon TWICE. After the first foley balloon, was so painful, the midwife said word for word to me "if you can't handle this, how do you think you're going to be able to handle birth" I started passing out from the meds and i was hyperventilating in my sleep due to the trauma. Also while I was screaming in pain from the foley balloon she kept demanding me to stop tensing and squeezing but the pain was so unbearable. Don't get me wrong, the nurses in L&D were fantastic, absolute angels. but that midwife should change her career. Anyways, in those 3 days they attempted a foley balloon a 2nd time. Thank god for the epideral that only lasted an hour. When they popped my water it was just as bad as the foley balloon. The OBGYN that time suggested a c section and that she'll talk to the surgeon/doctor. Well... he came in and advised against a c section, he also said that the OBGYN that mentioned the c section to us, didn't mention it to him in that way. Eventually, I requested it anyways. After 3 long days, I also couldn't get out of bed due to preeclampsia. When I requested the C section, the surgeon came in and said "So you're throwing in the towel" making me feel like I was GIVING UP AND DOING SOMETHING WRONG. How terrifying it was. My son was born 2 hours after I requested a C section, by C section. He is also the happiest and healthiest boy. LADIES, trust in yourself, your body and your support system. MOVING ON... I had recently visited the emergency room for the urge to throw up was unbearable, sweating, chills, cold sweats. They just gave me IV fluids, and ANTIPSYCHOTIC for the nausea and sent me on my way. I WENT BACK 5x in a week and a half for the same symptoms. And all 5x they did the same thing. Iv fluids, and antipsychotic and sent me on my way. Come to find out, I had H. Pylori bacterial infection in my stomach the entire time. It wasn't until I called a doctor elsewhere and asked for help. That doctor I saw elsewhere saw I had H.Pylori 2 years ago and instantly sent me for a test. I had lost 26 lbs in 5 days. The ER knew that. One of the 5 visits, I knew I had H.Pylori, it was in my MYCHART, I told them I was diagnosed with it but the symptoms were unbearable for I had been waiting days to figure out what's wrong due to their lack of actually trying to figure it out. They told me that H.Pylori is usually an outpatient problem With a prescriber. I'm sorry, what? And again, IV fluids, but this time a pill(my reason for coming in was i threw up my antibiotics). The doctor prescribed me an anti nausea medication that has to be accepted by my insurance, it's been 4 days since that visit and the doctor I saw in the Emergency Room still hasn't responded to the insurance message or whatever. Thankfully, after that 5th visit I haven't had to go back and I've been able to keep the antibiotics down. Ps; when this happened 2 years ago, it was the same scenario. No tests, just an IV fluid and antibiotic and sent me. Wasn't until I reached out to an actual doctor to figure it out. I pray I don't ever have to bring my son here for anything. I couldn't bare to see him go through something like this with people who are supposed to help you.

I was violent and had to be restrained twice in the first 3 days. i ended up staying for 16 days, with the first few days being very rough for me mentally. I can honestly say that I am completely greatful for the treatment I received there. The staff, especially those who restrained me were absolutely professional. I was not hurt at all even while being restrained by 12 people. They were truly experts at their jobs. After my stay I left feeling like myself again. I want to thank Dr. Asif for working closely with me on my medication plan, helping me with not only my schizophrenia but also my anxiety and depression. I also want to thank all the nurses, therapists, food preppers, cleaning staff, techs and security (one of which I bit during a psychotic episode, sorry about that :/) who are very underappreciated for the work they do, and helped me 24/7, going out of their way many times to help me. Even after my schizophrenic episodes the staff did nothing but make me feel protected, being friendly and making me feel like I was a valuable member of society again. I apologize for the long ramble but the guys and gals at this hospital deserve respect and acknowledgement for the work they do. I am getting my life back because of them, and I have nothing but love, respect and admiration for what they do. I wish the hospital was better funded, added more healing activities like sports and was more taken of financially by the state government. Without this help I could have been hurt or even worse, I could have died. So thank you to all of the staff for making my stay a very productive and healthy one. I'll never forget you all as I get my life back on track. God bless you all. P.S. After a year passes I just might take a chance and apply there to help others like you all helped me. You guys rock. With love, Matt

The next days he wasn't getting any better and returned to the ER because he couldn't walk or use his arms at all. After returning for the second visit his was admitted for Spinal Stenosis, after MRI his entire body. A few days later he had two surgeries on 2 separate days and they both went well. The after care was the problem . The hospital seemed understaffed and his pain management and toileting needs weren't handled well at all. He was transferred to another part of the hospital where the nurses weren't as busy, that was a complete fail. He needed help with the urinal because he couldn't grip or pick up anything at that time. The call lights weren't answered in a timely manner and resulted in him urinating on himself and all over the floor more than once. He was also accused of being inappropriate because he grunted at the end of urinating trying to assure he emptied his bladder! Somehow the nurse and or CNA's took the grunt in a sexual way . Kwaniqua (she goes by Nikki) was the only hands on employee that didn't take that the wrong way. When I arrived from NY my husbands was filthy and there was sticky urine all around his bed. I bathed him and shaved him but he couldn't wait to leave there. I work in healthcare so I was really bothered by the condition of his room . I'm unsure who's job it is to call house keeping but every employee that entered the room had to know the floor needed to be cleaned! The discharge was pretty smooth except his disability paperwork wasn't forwarded to the surgeons office and as a result he didn't get paid. We had to drive back to Pa for a virtual visit because the surgeons license is for PA only, not a big deal but the lack of communication was. 3/13/2026 we're still waiting for paperwork because of a release that was needed. So many balls were dropped related to getting these papers filled out I'm still baffled. Thanks to Bailey in the Orthopedic Office for picking up the ball for the rest of her fellow employees and employer! It took Bailey one day to figure out what many couldn't for whole 60 days. We have the portal set up, paperwork uploaded and his 2nd follow up appt scheduled , all within 24 hours!
