Tired of the local places, we decided to take a little trip outside the city for BBQ. Gator Junction is a small mom and pop joint of the interstate. The smell was amazing as soon as we got out of the car. The menu was not huge which we liked. All the staples are available. Good variety of sides. You order at the counter and the staff brings it to your table. We had the brisket plate which comes with 2 sides and bread and the brisket sandwich. The brisket was so tender on both the sandwich and the plate. The sauce was sweet which I liked. I chose the potato salad which was typical barbecue restaurant style potato salad and the jambalaya. The jambalaya was good and had a kick to it. They also had 8 kinds of homemade fried pies and several other pies for dessert. The staff was fantastic.

They didn't hold back! Best brisket sandwich I've had in a long time. I could smell the post oak the second we stepped out of the truck. This is ALWAYS a good sign. The portion of brisket was almost too much, but just right for someone as hungry as myself. The green beans may be the best I've ever had (?) I have no idea how they are able to maintain the fresh green color and shape while simultaneously producing a soft and velvety mouthfeel. It's one of those great regional mysteries I guess (?). We will certainly be stopping here on the way back to Austin. Next time I will bring some cash for some of the vintage cast irons or other local antique ephemera. Awesome place!

My wife and I had had a great experience at the Pit Room previously, so brought the rest of my family here to experience. I found the food to continue to be really good, especially the fatty brisket. Stopped by around 11 am, and there was still parking in the dedicated surface lot next to the building. The smell of bbq wasn't as prevalent as last time. Once walking in, you stand in line to first order your meat...which is immediately sliced in front of you. You then move further along to ask for your sides, including as many slices of plain white bread as you want. My daughter treated us this time, so didn't record prices, but thought it was reasonable. I liked the sliced brisket a lot, along with the side of elote corn and mac n cheese. The free toppings bar had the various pickled vegetables that really cut through the fattiness of the meat. Drinks were all self serve, with a water station and soda fountain. Probably ordered a bit less than expected for 4 people, but was happy that there were no left overs, and left not completely stuffed, since we had a long day ahead of us. By the time we left a little after noon, there was both a wait for tables and parking. We had come at the right time.

Got the one meat lunch platter which came with two sides. I chose the brisket, mac n cheese, and cole slaw. The meat was so tender and juicy, and the bbq sauce was one of the best I've had. The sides were just ok, and I wouldn't recommend the mac n cheese (too meh). I liked the pickle station they had. Counter service with tables both inside and outside. All the employees were quick but friendly.

You were greeted by super friendly people that explained everything and helped us make a decision on what to eat. My husband and I both had the three meat combo, which, came with the choice of three meats, two sides and a drink. I choose the ribs, sausage, and brisket with green beans and ranch potatoes. The ribs and sausage were very yummy! The brisket was good but a little dry. The ranch potatoes were cold and definitely needed more seasoning but were ok. I was not a fan of the green beans, they were very bland. I got the bbq sauce on the side and it was tangy and good. My husband ordered the chicken, sausage, and brisket with the cream corn and green beans. He liked all the 3 meats and LOVED the cream corn. He said the green beans needed some help. The total for the two of us was about $45. We would definitely eat here again and would recommend it to everyone.

They've recently started serving breakfast croissants (which look amazing) but we haven't tried those yet. The atmosphere is inviting, with a clean and well-decorated interior, plenty of seating, and a friendly staff. But the real test is the food, and this place truly delivers on its reputation for solid Texas barbecue. The brisket was everything you want it to be: juicy and flavorful with a well-developed bark. It had a classic, hearty taste that made for a great main course. The pork spare ribs also had a great, flavorful bark, but they were a little on the tough side. They weren't the fall-off-the-bone tender ribs you might crave. The absolute star of the show, however, was the jalapeño and cheddar sausage. This homemade, double-grind sausage was perfectly seasoned and had a great blend of cheese and jalapeño mixed in. The casing had the perfect snap and was top-notch. The sides were equally impressive. The Maque-Choux (like a Cajun street corn) had a delightful char on the corn kernels and a perfect level of spice with a hint of red pepper. The pit beans were a classic, complementary side that made you feel like you were eating around a campfire, especially with the addition of some tender brisket mixed in. Not shown in the picture, the boudin cornbread was a delicious and unique surprise, filled with brisket, rice, and jalapeños. Overall, this is a spot I would highly recommend for anyone looking for an authentic and high-quality Texas barbecue experience.

This was about my fourth visit, and at this point, it's locked in as a go-to on my BBQ rotation. Tucked just a few miles from UH and TSU, it's got that true hidden gem energy. The brisket? Mouth-wateringly tender with the kind of flavor that makes you slow down just to enjoy it. And the homemade links took me straight back--tender, slightly crumbly, all-beef goodness the way I remember growing up. That alone puts Ray's in a small category, because finding legit ALL-beef sausage these days isn't easy. They nailed it. Then there's the sauce. It doesn't overpower--it completes. Everything on the plate just comes together the way good BBQ is supposed to. One thing to note: the sides aren't listed on that big menu behind the counter, but the young lady up front has it down and will walk you through everything without missing a beat. The whole staff gives off that "you've been here before" vibe--even if it's your first time. That kind of hospitality sticks with you. The dining area is spacious enough to sit and enjoy your food, with a couple TVs going if you want to catch something while you eat. Bottom line: I've never left disappointed, and at this point, I don't expect to. Ray's has earned a customer for life.
