Always accommodating, especially with a very sick pet. I'm glad to have been able to go back to this veterinarian after moving away from Devon, where they originally were located.

The front desk staff were very kind and helpful. The veterinarian (Kailey Werkheiser) was very detailed and transparent in her diagnosis and treatment options. The story has a sad ending, but the staff, techs, and veterinarian were outstanding in their communication, compassion, and empathy throughout the entire process.

I was never given false hope and the pros, cons, and odds of each decision or option they provided me with were very clearly explained. I was never pressured into making any decision and they were supportive of whatever I did decide. I truly believe had it not been for their quick recognition, action, and compassion, Jalen would not be here. I highly recommend MVA ER and Critical Care teams. Here is a bit of detail into how they helped save his life... I brought Jalen into the ER 2 times, for suspected pneumonia caused by Kennel Cough that he caught after being boarded. The first visit, the X-rays did not show pneumonia, but he was showing mild clinical signs. I was given the option to hospitalize him for a few days or treat him at home. I opted to treat him at home since his case was seemingly mild and thought he just needed antibiotics and some good rest. He was seemingly getting better but then took a bad turn 2 days later. I rushed him back to the ER and he was admitted. X-rays now showed full blown pneumonia that had not responded to the antibiotics he was given. He was admitted to the Critical Care Unit where a specialized procedure was performed that would help identify the causative agent and get him started on the correct medication. He was in the hospital 3 days. I was not able to visit him since he was infectious, however I received phone calls 2x per day as well as photos of him texted to me. He was looking good, and we had a plan for him to come home. The morning he was supposed to come home, I got an early phone call telling me something had happened. Long story short, the pneumonia worsened overnight, and he had coughed so hard that he developed a pneumomediastinum which was causing his heart rate to drop dangerously low. I became hysterical on the phone, but the CC doctor was able to calm me down enough to snap me out of it and get to MVA ASAP. When I got there, I was immediately taken into an exam room and met by the CC doctor. She explained the situation and that his best chance of survival was to transfer him to Penn Vet where he can get the specialized emergency surgery and possible ventilator care he needed, but it needed to be done now. She also explained the odds of him surviving any of this (they were not good 50/50 at best, and those odds dropped to 30% if he had to be put on a vent). I okayed the transfer, and after I did (as to not influence me one way or another), she told me that after talking to me the past few days, she knew I would say yes and she already had a team prepping to transport him. A doctor and their best ICU nurse traveled with him. He was kept on oxygen the entire time, the scene was something out of a movie. I was able to visit with him for few minutes while they finished setting up the transport vehicle. The pneumomediastinum caused air to also build up subcutaneously, so when I pet him, I could literally feel air bubbles under his skin. It was horrifying but clung to hope. Then it was time to go, they wheeled him out and loaded him in the transport vehicle. It was a 45-minute drive to Penn Vet. I followed the transport vehicle and met them there. They unloaded Jalen and immediately wheeled him back into a room at Penn. The MVA staff looked back at me with such compassion and concern. I appreciated these glimmers of hope and compassion; they were much needed during such a traumatic experience. I truly believe it was the quick actions of the MVA staff that attributed to saving Jalen's life. I arrived at MVA at 9:10AM. He was in emergency surgery in Penn by 11AM. It was the fastest, longest morning of my life and I will never forget any of it. Thank you so much to Dr. Fischer and the staff at MVA. I hope you know you were an essential part of literally saving Jalen's life and I am forever grateful.
