Rick, the director of the school, made time to meet me that same day. I talked to him about my worries, and he told me that the while not exactly necessary, bar school would teach me all of the basics (using clever word clues to make it easy) and THEN some. The "THEN some" is where the real value of this bartending school lies. Rick and Denny, career bartending pros (and incredibly nice people), will not only teach you the recipes, tools, and tricks of the trade but also the surprisingly cool history of each drink and alcohol. They'll share invaluable customer service tips that they've learned over the years and tell you stories about various situations they've found themselves in behind the bar. They'll make sure you learn and practice only good habits behind the bar so you aren't embarrassed on the job when you absentmindedly knock drinks into your ice bin or get carpal tunnel from bad pouring techniques. And finally, they'll help you find jobs. Knoxville PBS has a good reputation with the local tourism and event industry and hires out bartenders to year-round events. I graduated this past Monday and Rick set me up with a job that very day bartending at a charity dinner event this weekend. I had a great time going through the course, and they worked with me to make sure I got all my classes in around my schedule. The tuition is well worth the experience! So while attending this bar school isn't necessary to get a job bartending in Knoxville, it IS necessary if you want to be a great bartender right off the bat. The online learning environment was intuitive and an easy way to learn new material with plenty of opportunities to watch examples, practice on your own, and ask questions. Valerie was my Power Hour instructor and I was very impressed with her seamless instruction - in just an hour she was able to instruct us on the basics of using PivotCharts to summarize large sets of data. After begging, my parents agreed! I was set to come in again and pay but then my mom had to receive chemotherapy and needed me. I called and setup another date and they agreed. The next week my mom was ill from the chemo and I, once again, could not leave her. I called to explain but the lady went on and on about how they have other people that really want "this" and if I'm not going to pay to just stop. I explained that its my dream and all. She set another date. My mother was sick again. I actually cried when talking to the woman, she said," Just stop, its obvious your parents don't care, they don't want this for you, you are screwing with our schedule." I tried to explain, shes the type that just wont stop talking and only get louder when you try to say something. I said that i had the money and I am sorry for this and that as she was going off, she stopped and yelled (I swear) "Liar, don't be condescending with me!", and then hung up and now when I attempt to call they always pick up and say the same thing, SORRY WE CANNOT HELP YOU. GOODBYE! How heartless, they just want your money! And I swear to God in heaven that this is the truth! I imagine a sticky note with my number on it. My mom survived by the way. :)
