We parked in the back. It's designed to be a pick up or drive thru donut shop with no seating. The person working the window was very patient and pleasant. We got a small sausage and cheese kolache. These are the best damn donuts I have ever had in my life. I've had donuts all around the country and Gates is better than all of them. Their donuts are so dreamy, like biting into clouds. When you talk to the family owners, you can tell they love what they do. You can tell they use high quality ingredients because any other donut is greasy, soggy or hard, and has a weird flavor to it. Not Gates Donuts, they're baked fresh DAILY and are sold out early. There's a reason they sell out and there's a line out of the parking lot. Plus their prices are just insane. If you go to circle k for a gross donut you're gonna spend over $1 and get cancer. At gates, you're gonna spend less than $1 but probably tip a bunch because they have great service and you want to support your local business. I haven't had a terrible thing on their menu. And our dogs LOOOOVE the kolaches. Sorry folks, no pics because I ate my 2 donuts before I even made it out of the parking lot :) read more

Tried Gates Donuts for the first time today while on the way to drop off my kids to school. Great selection and reminded me of the Donut Man in CA. Beautiful and clean window display of the doughnuts they have and also a bountiful amount if the different kolaches they had to offer today. For the amount if $6.15, I ordered a maple bacon bar (the two pieces of bacon on top of this donut tasted like a Chicharróns ), a chocolate iced donut, a cinnamon twist donut and a strawberry filled donut with pink icing. I loved how the filled donut was oozing out when my daughter took a bite. No air pockets there! The cinnamon twist tasted like a warm churro (heaven!) I'm glad we tried this place out this morning...pretty much made my morning a bit better. Oh! And the dozen glazed donut holes ($1.84) was so light and airy....melted in my mouth after biting into it. I had to stop myself after eating half of the bag lol Safe to say....found my donut place. After 14 years in Corpus Christi I decided to try this Gates Donut Shop out after a write-up about them featured in Inspire Coastal Living magazine. Here is the crazy part. I live just a few blocks from the donut shop and have always known about them as I drive by there 3-4 times a week but never even thought about stopping in. They always had this 'no longer in business' closed appearance. Anyway, so after seeing the article come out on social media on Sunday night, I look up their hours and wouldn't you know they are closed on Mondays. So had to wait another day. OK fine. I ended up going on a Wednesday. All evening Tuesday I looked forward to my trip and wanted to especially try out the buttermilk donuts that the magazine article boasted about. I am not usually a morning person but I got there at 11am (open 6am-2pm) . I saw maybe a couple dozen donuts spread out over two trays in there. I was like "where are all your donuts"? The lady responded, "Well this is all we have we had a really busy morning". I said, "So all you have is glaze"? I also noticed some honeybun looking donuts and twists. That was it. She then castigated me for not being there much earlier, like 7am. Nope don't need to get up that early just for a donut run. I was so disappointed being that it was my first time there and I get that kind of experience. Usually, I had gone to Shipleys since 1973 for donuts. I know I sound like I eat them all the time, I really don't. Just on occasion. Shipley's are open bankers hours too but at least they maintain full inventory (most of the time) of their donuts. I didn't even see any Kolaches out made or anything at Gates. So I bought just 3 glazed donuts for myself. They were OK. Though they were hours old, the donuts were good but they were nothing really to write home about. Will I go back? Possibly. But it has to be right after 6am as that is obviously the right time to go if you want to see the full bloom of what they have to offer. read more

I hadn't been here in years but always hear good things so I stopped to get something for a work farewell. They have real bavarian cream donuts with the white powdered sugar on top which is hard to find these days. For a dozen donuts the price is great especially with the assortment they have. The kolaches are awesome, don't have too much bread like most places, but the price for a dozen kolaches is too much and that's the only reason I give it 4 stars instead of 5. Finally stopped and tried Gates. I must say it's great. So far i've just had the cake donuts with chocolate glaze. My uncle tried the regular glazed this morning and he fell in love with them. As for the cake donuts they are extremely moist. i usually have two and thats satisfies me. This establishment ONLY accepts CASH!! so bring a few bucks with you if you plan on stopping by. Also they are closed on monday and only open til 2pm tues-sun. when you use the drive through the parking lot has a lot of potholes which is a slight down side. but honestly where in corpus do you not find potholes? ha! except this time i am not going 45 miles on the road. okay..sorry back to gates: The ladies i've seen are really friendly. Its located near an elementary school so during the school year and depending on the time you go there may be a little traffic. But hey if you have the time and a few bucks i say its worth the try. During weekdays they usually open until 2pm. But their donuts get cold fast and tastes like they have been a day old. If you want fresh ones definitely go when they open. And during weekends you usually can only get donuts when they open. They usually sell out. Or that's what it seems like. So call before hand. I would still prefer Walmart donuts. As a native Corpus Christian, I grew up on Gates Donuts. The secret is to go early in the morning when they first open and ask for anything warm. They are usually too hot to eat. But once they cool down just a bit, they will literally melt in your mouth. I've eaten lots of donuts in my 47 years, and I can honestly say none can touch a fresh Gates donut. I prefer glazed and the fried cinnamon rolls. If, however, you are unable to get there when they are still hot/warm, a simple 5 seconds in the microwave will make it nearly as good as it is when they are fresh from the fryer -- and still superior to the competition. They are closed on Monday, and only accept cash. If you are there before 8:00 a.m., they will not accept any bills over $10. They are that good! If they weren't, they would be forced to accept all methods of payment. It is the holy grail of the donut kingdom! read more
