Not a big box chain…read more Just owned and operated by guys who lived in the Triad and shared in the passion of video games and, to a lesser extent, anime and that kind of stuff. Player's Choice was ahead of its time and I'm not sure the City of High Point's population/economy was big nor "advanced" enough to sustain it. I think a store like Player's Choice was better-suited for bigger cities and metropolitan areas with larger gaming communities that had more disposable income. New and rare video games, consoles, and anime weren't cheap! Gaming can be an expensive hobby. I visited this Player's Choice store in High Point multiple times in the late 90s. My mom used to drive me over 30 minutes just to get to the flagship store in Winston-Salem on Robinhood Road: https://www.yelp.com/biz/game-on-winston-salem. However, around the time this location opened, circa 1998, I was old enough to drive. I'd either come here by myself or bring my friends. As high schoolers, we couldn't afford much here, but it was still fun to visit and browse. This location was only five minutes from our house so needless to say, I was very happy it opened. Player's Choice had game rental plans well before services like GameFly. I got some great deals on used anime OVAs on VHS. Even in the late 90s, I could tell this store was struggling. During my visits, business in the store couldn't compare to the business I saw at the Robinhood location. Across the country, video game shops like this have been closing in droves because the demand for physical media isn't what it used to be. The Robinhood store, which eventually changed its name to Game On, officially closed on January 4, 2020. This used to be the Staples shopping center, but Harbor Freight is now the anchor in Staples' old space. And today, a Boost Mobile store is where Player's Choice used to be. Thanks for the memories, Player's Choice of High Point. Gone, but never forgotten.

Having been their first market, I wasn't sure what I was getting into, but there was clear communication from Sherri from the start, leading up to the day of. They were very clear on set up instructions, where to park, and all the details needed. Their vendor booth fee was very reasonable, and they even provided a gift bag to each vendor with small gifts and a bag of snacks and water to get through the day (a first for me). The show had some good foot traffic, again, for being the first of its kind. I'm excited to do more events with them, and would recommend!

I was immediately welcomed by a wall of pokémon themed collectibles and a christmas tree decorated with the like. So cute! It was also really neat to see these retro games and consoles that could really take front and center stage. Unlike other used game stores, they really elevated and gave these a more dignified showcasing of value. Had me questioning whether I should be selling my old game boy games and consoles! Seems to be a market for this and I'm glad to see it. Felt like walking into an EB Game store for me. Shows how long I've been around. Sheesh.

Not only did they have a good selection, not only did they have an excellent selection. They had the largest collection of Funko pops. I've ever seen under one roof. They had a lot of other really neat products too, including Asian food snacks. We made numerous purchases. The staff was super helpful super chill and the music was really good in the store. I saw them interact very gingerly with a young lady. Who had some slight social developmental issues. Class act Store all the way around. I only wish I lived closer... They also have so much more like collectibles, musical equipment and much more. You can definitely kill a few hours here if you aren't careful. So much to see. I did find a couple books I wanted at a good price. I also found a used computer keyboard I needed. The books are somewhat organized but finding specific authors can be challenging. Their book collection is extensive. The staff was friendly and there is plenty of parking. I'll be going back to spend more time. I didn't have a lot of time to spend. I still like perusing the store, but I make sure to check online prices as I shop. I think the DVD prices have gotten really bad. The books are still pretty well priced, but that is probably because the original price is printed right on the cover by the publisher. I have given up on trying to take items in to sell. They do worse than low balling you. I miss the old Edward McKay's.

Fun fact, I made my first comic purchase here about 6 years ago. Since my last visit, the layout appears to be easier to navigate. The space is made up of about three different rooms to explore, so I didn't feel cramped or as if I was invading anyone's bubble. The staff answered my many questions and even attempted to assist me in recalling a title I was having trouble finding. Which I later identified. The parking was a bit hectic on a Friday afternoon. I was in and out within a matter of minutes. I initially dropped in for the New Bloodline comic but also decided on the Scarlet Witch while browsing. My purchases came out to $9.59. I'll be returning soon for the Saga volumes!

Plus -- the owner and staff actually READ the new titles and are ready to give a FRIENDLY and informed recommendation. (If you've been to the "other" type of stores, you know that's not as common as it should be.) Regular updates on social media keep you informed of new titles worth checking out. The best factor overall is the FUN and NO PRESSURE atmosphere created by the staff and customers who have made this a true treasure of the local community. Really happy to discover this store.
