The highlight for me came from such a recommendation, a dessert wine (an eponymous Noble Rot) paired with a salted caramel praline. The combination of the sweet wine and the bitter chocolate and salty caramel was nothing like I've ever experienced before. Seriously, the owners put so much thought into this place. It is beautiful and relaxing. The two owners, husband and wife, greeted us very warmly and offered to walk us through our options. Our German being very poor, the owners offered to translate the menu to help our choice of wine. We settled on a German wine that was recommended by the owner. The wine was perfect as we listened to Jack White and talked about how life was different for them when the wall was up. It was a wonderful night.

So far, I've been there twice--once on a Saturday evening: really cool and hip, funky lights/chairs/décor, packed with mostly people in their late teens to thirties. And then once on a Monday afternoon--quiet and mostly empty, $1.50 for a great hot chocolate (I'm not sure you can find anything cheaper in the area), internet, and even a guitarist who happened to be playing songs by the Beatles and Queen, as well as other oldies. Since there are no English explanations here yet, here's the deal: in the evenings (not sure exactly when, and maybe just on weekend nights), you pay 2 euros to borrow a glass, and then proceed to try whatever wine and food as you like. When you leave, they trust you to judge the value of the wine/food/ambience for yourself and pay as you see fit. I personally find the concept fantastic. When I was there, service was great, the vibe was great, the chance to try a little bit of so many different wines was great. It seems that people have occasionally had bad experiences with the staff, but with such a business model, I can understand how the staff might get frustrated dealing with stingy student-types.
