The risotto with its unusual blending of radicchio, gamberi and gorgonzola is a masterpiece of equilibrium and taste. The desserts were delicious. We had no wine - we had decided it had to be a nonalcoholic day - but the list of wines was very attractive with a lot of interesting proposals: next time!

It is tucked away a quiet unassuming alley only a few blocks off the main square (Piazza dei Signori). Ambiance is warm, service is great (perfect English), and the food is fresh and high quality. During the summer once, I sat outside and was totally relaxed (other times were during the Christmas season...warm and cozy inside). It's a focused menu (single page) aligned to the Moderna region, so you can tell great care is taken with the ingredients and preparation.... Portions for me were perfect and wines paired very well; I leave completely satisfied and wanting to come back. HIGHLY recommend this restaurant.

This restaurant is the perfect little Italian restaurant with an inviting and simultaneously impressive atmosphere. Our waiter was friendly and spoke great English, providing wine and food recommendations. Since I was not able to narrow down the options to just a single dish, my friend and I shared the donkey pasta and the Amarone risotto. Both dishes were absolutely incredible. Anybody visiting Verona must try to the risotto since Amarone is the big wine from the region--though it was quite rich, it was the best risotto I have ever had. I was really excited to try donkey for the first time and the pasta did not disappoint, it was cooked perfectly and the flavors were incredibly tasty. All of the prices were very fair; in fact, they were actually on the cheaper side of what we encountered in Italy. We made one of the earliest reservations of the night, 7pm, and were greeted promptly at the door. The friendly staff took our coats to hang and escorted us to our table. From beginning to end we were warmly embraced by the waitresses, waiters, and sommelier. They politely shared some information on each dish, glass of wine, and why they pair well together. This was the first time we had experienced such attention to detail in service. We chose to try the traditional tasting menu for the evening and explore new flavor combinations. There were a number of dishes we enjoyed but a few that stood out that I remember today would be the egg dish served in a glass with a foam on top. It was warm, savory, and unexpected. We also enjoyed the salmon and risotto with squid ink. Il Desco was an experience we will always remember. It helped us to slow down and take in each bite, sip, and moment. The ambiance around us was classic elegance with a dose of casual comfort. We never felt out of place, especially being visitors and knowing little Italian, and only accepted. We got to see the chef greet some friends and more people getting seated as the night went on. As we left for the evening and thanked the wonderful staff for the amazing experience we could easily see why this restaurant is so well loved. We look forward to visiting sometime in the future, it's definitely worth checking out when in Verona!

I liked Il Desco overall for the food offered, but a few of the courses felt challenging to me…read more First things first, the ambiance is gorgeous -- there were many other tables dining during our seating, but you did not overhear their conversation. Well lit, but a warm light, and statement artwork line the room. Service is done impeccably. When I remember the tasting menu we had, we went for the full menu with wine pairings. They do offer smaller tasting menus, I think, of 3 or 5 courses, and portion sizes are adjusted accordingly. The full tasting menu is at least a 3-4 hour experience, so plan accordingly. In terms of challenging courses: possible the welcome offering from the chef, or one of the early first courses featured a savory panna cotta with lemon and tarragon. The texture of the pana cotta itself and the flavor was perfect. The addition of the chunks of lemon and tarragon sent the flavor profile into an almost astringent direction that simply did not work for me against a dairy background. I could see how lemon and tarragon together could work in a palate cleanser as a sorbet, but here, it was too strong. Lastly, the dessert was served with Macallan. While bold and adventurous to extend the earthy flavors of the dessert into a long finish, it felt heavy handed after a 8 glass wine pairing with each course. This didn't feel like a finessed finish to the dinner, or even going out with a spectacular bang, more like a hammer blow. At this point it was impossible to finish. More positively, I felt that the rest of the dishes and wine pairings were executed to very high standards. The beef cheek melted in your mouth tender, with the right aged red-wine pairing to cleanse the pállate. There was incredible treatment of monkfish in a few different ways where I could it regularly. If are interested in fine fining/ a Michelin experience while in Verona, I would recommend Il Desco. I personally would be curious to see how their menu evolves with seasonality.

Al Vecio came up as a good local place that you could manage without any Italian and it was less than a 15 minute walk from the hotel. There was good signage off the street, which opens up into a courtyard where there's parking and a patio, and a party (with kareoke!) seemed to be going on. Inside it's a big space, with high ceilings and wooden beams aplenty, and warm yellow paint that gave it a cozy feel. While they don't have a big menu out front for tourists, they did have an English menu to give us, which took a bit of the gambling out of our meal. We settled on the Mediterranean bruschetta to start, gnochettini with bacon and ham for my wife, and penne all-arrabiatta for me. A 1/4L of house red wine was a mere €2.50 - yes please! Bread and our drinks came out quickly, as well as a bowl of Parmesan. The bread wasn't the freshest at 10pm, but that wasn't surprising. My wine wasn't great, but it wasn't bad and served its purpose as table wine. The bruschetta came soon afterward, six slices from the middle of a long loaf of bread cut lengthwise. It was covered with an impressive layer of mozza, and grape tomatoes. The cheese was good and the tomatoes were nice and fresh, and added a nice acidic pop to the bruschetta. My pasta was blazing hot, and is probably the hottest pasta I've ever had. So it turns out that the "red pepper" in the description wasn't just a bell pepper, and was more like "a lot of chiles". I put back a ton of liquid while eating it, and sweat out an equal amount. It was tasty though and the fresh tomatoes in it added little non-spicy pop to the dish, but there was too much spice to notice or enjoy any depth to the sauce. My wife's gnoccetini was very novel - we both thought it was green beans at first arrival, but it turns out it was narrow gnocchi, coloured green and twisted a little at the ends to give them a bean-like look. I couldn't taste what was making them green, if anything other than food colouring, but the cream sauce was very good - thick, bacony and rich. After asking for the bill, it came with small glasses filled with soft coffee-flavoured ice cream, although it was so coffee-ish that I wondered if fresh espresso was mixed in with some ice cream. It was delicious and a god send after the spice of my dish. The bill came to a shockingly-low €27, an equally refreshing digestif after the tourist-gouging prices of Dubrovnik and elsewhere in the much more tourist heavy areas of Italy. Al Vecio is a great spot for incredibly affordable and delicious Italian cooking.

Had salad, fettuccini with truffles, and house wine. Salad- very large, rough cuts of cabbages and sorts. Did not care for it. Fettuccini- under cooked and hard, lumped together like it was cooked hours ago. How can you mess up such a simple pasta dish? Flavorless disaster for 12 euros! House wine- disgusting! There are ton of good cheap wine in Italy. This restaurant somehow managed to find the worst. By the standard of this few dishes, it pretty much says it all about this restaurant. 2 star restaurant at best. I'm giving 1 star to bring the rating down to reality.
