Dr. Hirshfield had done cataract surgery on my wife's right eye and was about to do cataract surgery on her left eye. Dr. Hirshfield restored my sight! He's incredibly knowledgeable, and he found the diagnosis that every other doctor missed. Dr. Hirshfield truly knows his craft, and it shows in the care he provides. I'm truly grateful for his expertise. At the age of 19, one morning I woke up and could not see. My eyes were sensitive to sunlight. I visited several hospitals and went to numerous doctors, and no one could give me answers as to what was going on with my eyesight. I don't remember how I found Dr. Hirshfield but the day I walked into his office changed my life. He knew exactly what the issue was and explained to me in full detail in terms I could understand; he also shared with me his plan of action and ensured me I was in good hands. Dr Hirshfield performed a cornea transplant on my left eye when I was 22 years old and five years later performed another cornea transplant on my right eye. When I walked into Dr Hirshfield's office I was legally blind. Here it is I am 50 years old and under the care of Dr Hirshfield I am no longer legally blind, my donated corneas are still functioning to their fullest potential, and with the aid of glasses I can see. AVOID THIS EYE CENTER AT ALL COSTS--AN ABSOLUTE NIGHTMARE! I've had the misfortune of visiting Dr. Hirshfield at this so-called "clinic" three times, and it's been a maddening descent from bad to utterly deplorable. My first visit was an emergency due to an eye injury. The doctor begrudgingly squeezed me in, tossed some antibiotics my way, and shuffled me out the door. I was grateful at the time--foolishly so, as it turns out, because that was the only semi-decent experience I'd get. The follow-up visits have been an unmitigated disaster, exposing this place for the chaotic, disrespectful sham it truly is. Take my most recent appointment: scheduled for 11:45 a.m., with instructions to arrive 15 minutes early. I complied, only to be left rotting in the waiting room for over 30 minutes before a cursory 5-minute exam. Then, they dumped me into a second, even more purgatorial "inner waiting room" with no end in sight. I watched in disbelief as 10 people who arrived after me were seen and sent on their way while I sat there, ignored. The staff? Beyond atrocious--snarling, dismissive, and utterly devoid of basic human decency. Not once did they bother to offer an update, an apology, or even a shred of courtesy. A simple "You'll be seen soon" would've been something, but apparently, that's too much to expect from this wretched crew. Dr. Hirshfield himself is a disgrace--arrogant, incompetent, and seemingly incapable of diagnosing anything beyond his own inflated ego. He's dragged me back for follow-ups with no solutions, no answers, and no care, just a vague wave to return and waste more of my time. Today, after enduring yet another endless wait, I dared to ask the staff how much longer I'd be stuck there. Their response? A barked "Sit down and wait," delivered with all the charm of a prison warden. No information, no respect--just contempt. This place isn't just unprofessional; it's a black hole of misery that will suck away your time, your patience, and your faith in healthcare. Thank G-d for Dr. Hirshfield and his immaculate staff.Very skilled,caring,and knowledgeable.He treated me for NAION and removed cataracts from my damaged eye because I still had very limited vision he wanted to protect.I had Bells Palsey that last for 8 months.He guided me through the monthly care for my affected right eye so I didnt have cornea damage.On Wed he did the cataract surgery after the BP went away.Today I am seeing the first time sans glasses,due to his cautious and very meticulous surgery.The 2 pairs of glasses I used to have are useless.For computer and reading just a cheap pair of OTC readers for now.It's a miracle. read more

Do you need your cataracts removed ? DO NOT USE THIS DOCTOR. He is sarcastic, rude, condescending and WILL NOT DO THE RIGHT THING. I went to him to have my cataracts removed based on a recommendation from my sister-in-law. The doctor recommended several options to me as a replacement of my lenses. The basic cataract replacement would have required me to use glasses for reading. A second option would allow me to read without glasses and would give me near perfect vision. I was not a candidate for that because I have a macular pucker. The third option was a product called vivity. This product would allow me to have near perfect vision with the exception of reading very small print. This option came with a cost of approximately $2,500 each eye. However it came with the possibility of halos. A small percentage of those who opt for vivity might have halos for two to three months. There was one of two percent of the population who may never get rid of the halos. In theses cases the lense may need to be removed. I read the specs of vivity, it's all there in black and white. I opted to do the vivity lenses. I had my right eye done in April. It was perfect. Immediately after I had my left eye done in May, I saw halos that night. When I met with the doctor the following day they seemed to had disappeared. The following day they were back. I went back to Hirschfield in June. He said, let's give it another month. I went back to Hirshfield in July and still complained as I did in June about my halos. He said, I'm going to make this right. We are going to fix this. I might do laser. No worries, he said you will no have to pay for anything. He stated that he would may it RIGHT!!! I went back to him today. He stated that my vision was perfect. I reminded him of my halos. He immediately became condescending. First he stated that he could rip the lense out of my eye. The next statement was that my issue was a tragedy (very sarcastic). Apparently, he thought that statement was lost on me. Next he proceeded to insult my intelligence by telling me that I wasn't listening when he explained the vivity lense to me. Not only was I listening, I also read very well. I researched the lense extensively prior to the surgery. Finally he proceeded to ask me to schedule another appointment with him in three months. I would rather stick a fork in my eye. Don't tell me that you are going to fix something one month and then belittle me the next month and totally renege on your words. read more

Allow me to preface by saying the two star review is not for Dr. Hirshfield. He seems to address the reason for the visit, and has performed surgery on a family member, with no issues on his side. That being said, the office visit itself has a lot to be desired. First off, plan to spend at least two hours waiting before you are even seen. Secondly, the staff is hit or miss. Some go out of their way to assist , others do not even look up to answer a question. For example. I called the general number, and was speaking to someone at another location. She went above and beyond to connect me to the right person. When that finally happened, after multiple transfers, I was hung up on. When I called back, I was told the person to whom I was speaking, went to lunch. We had a positive experience for surgery on one eye, so we went back to do the other. This visit, the office couldn't get anything straight. The doctor had no record of the surgery. We were called for pre-surgical testing, but upon entering the office (after sitting for 2 hours,) they told us there was no need, they already had everything they needed. We were sent medication to take prior to the second surgery. No one in the office mentioned this need. In fact, if we didn't ask about it, we may not even have it. To go one step further, no instructions were given to the pharmacist as to how to administer. Not the best experience, if you ask me. read more

Dr. Hirshfield has been my family's eye doctor for well over 15 years. For most of my childhood and teenage years, I've worn glasses and contacts. My contacts were becoming intolerable to wear, so I asked Dr. Hirshfield about laser eye surgery. He said I was a great candidate for PRK, and gave me all the information I needed to make the decision to go through with it. I am almost 3 months post op, and I can't believe how amazing I can see. 20/20! The procedure was so fast, and Dr. Hirshfield made me feel comfortable throughout the whole thing. Not only did he correct my vision, and fix my astigmatism, he corrected my vision better than it was previously wearing glasses or contacts. I can't thank Dr. Hirshfield enough for all he's done. I had a tear duct infection. First Visit: I waited for one hour to see an incompetent assistant that could not explain anything properly who was also rude. The doctor said i needed antibiotics and another appointment. If the condition did not improve in 2 days then he would need to drain the abscess. The doctor was nice but didn't know which medicine to prescribe. I Waited another half hour for the prescription. They messed up the prescription and had to call it in again. Second visit: I waited for over two hours and it would have been longer if the lady before me had not left in frustration. Many patients with later appointments went before me. Finally I saw an assistant who was more competent and informed me that the doctor would go through with the procedure - even though he didn't come to see if it was doing better. Then i waited for another half hour. Then i was brought into a room and put in a reclined chair with my head back. The assistant said he would be right in so i should wait like that. After 20 mins the blood was rushing to my head and i was very uncomfortable. I left the office in frustration. I called the office IMMEDIATELY after and they would not let me speak to the doctor. They said he had left for the day, which is impossible because there were still patients there when i left and he was about to see me for a procedure. Terrible service! First of all the appointment center that answers the phone, leaves you on hold for forever to make a simple yearly routine check up. Then when they do answer you are placed on hold again to "check with the office" if any further testing is needed. The next thing you know they make an appointment that doesn't exist! I was told an the appointment I booked was for 7:45am and when we get to the office, no one is there. Around 8:00am, someone from the office staff says "We don't open until 9:30am". I asked if she could check the schedule and she keeps us outside for over 15 minutes because she "can't let us in". A second staff member arrives and asks "if we are waiting?" Yes! Of course! Or am I just holding up the wall in the hallway?!?! Never coming back here again! read more

Dr. Hirshfield is an incredible doctor, great knowledge, expertise in his field and reassuring as far as treatment and cures for your eyes. He was friendly, kind, supportive and a pleasure to meet. I am so happy I found him. I have had cataracts for many years being told they were inoperable. I thought I was going blind already and everything was fuzzy and foggy. I went to Dr. Hirshfield and the first thing he told me was they ARE operable and I have had one removed so far. My vision in my right eye now is 20/20. I am a patient of Dr. Hirschfield and over this past month I have received two cutting edge eye surgeries. I had a lens called the Symphony Toric Lens. I had astigmatism and the beginning of cataracts. I also wore glasses for everything. Dr. Hirschfield suggested in addition to correcting the cataract he could put this lens in. I had one done, and the other eye done two weeks later. I can't say enough about Dr. Hirschfield's expertise in general, but overall during the surgeries. The office that I had it done was located in Astoria, and they were great. The staff made you feel comfortable, and they ran the clinic very well. Everyone was nice, and you got the feeling that they were well qualified from beginning til end. I must say except for a few glaring (eyes) in the first week,, (which goes away)I can see better than I have ever seen in my entire life. I no longer wear glasses which is a miracle in and of itself, because I could not function without eyeglasses. The whole world appears brighter to me. Thank you so much Dr. Hirschfield!!! read more
