The Woodson(ahem!) Branch of the Gary Public Library was okay, the one time I went to it a few years ago when briefly in the area. I can't help but admit it doesn't quite compare, to some of the other and nicer libraries I'd been to both in NWI(i.e. Michigan City, Hammond), and in the rest of the Chicago area(numerous examples to list, where it'd be too numerous to list all the better examples within IL). It's clean though, and it'll do the trick for a library if you briefly need to go to one while in the Miller neighborhood of Gary.
This branch was fine, but it bugged me that the one time I visited, they had a TV on in the main room of the branch that wasn't muted. Fine if one employee wants to watch TV since the branch was not busy when I was here(I'll admit), but at least mute the TV for those who'd rather read a book(like I was trying to do) and use something like wireless headphones to listen to the sound, or only have the volume on if the TV was moved to a separate and closed room. It's sad the TV incident, kinda gave me a slightly negative recollection of this library. Since otherwise, I would give this place 3 stars.
For Gary, this library ended up nicer than I thought it was going to be. I just hope that TV incident isn't a normal thing, at this branch. The manager(s) should train the Gary Library employees to not have a TV on with sound on that everyone can hear throughout the library, and I'd give this place 3 stars. read more
