Late Update: my baby was part of the group during the orange man cutting the funding and all the children were being released on the streets with their belongings...well my son and his new gf (met each other there) came to stay with me and since they were so close to graduating the school went ahead and gave them their certifications based on the hours and great job they did. My son is in Welding (his work assignment ended and he's currently seeking employment) and his gf is in construction and working. Her assignment is ending soon. I've heard that they're still open so I'd send my child; BUT be careful because my son did confirm the "rumors" it's like a nonstop, never ending frat party to put it lightly. So make sure you've raised some mentally STRONG human beings who aren't easily influenced and manipulated by their peers (sex, drugs, money, etc.) and they'll be fine. read more

My husband has worked at Gary for a number of years and seen a lot happen. Like most schools, there are staff members who care a lot, and others who aren't all that great. That said, some of the staff are fabulous. There are students who sincerely want to learn a trade and get ahead, while there are others wasting time and wreaking havoc until they have to be sent home. Over the years, my husband has seen a lot of successes and a lot of failures. Some of his favorite students have been the foreign born students who are grateful for a decent place to stay, fresh food, education, and, of course, the hands-on job training. Many Job Corps students have gone on to make a great living for themselves. Students who are polite and work hard are going to receive more help and reap greater rewards than those who have an entitlement attitude and expect respect while they themselves are disrespectful to teachers and students, alike. As in every situation, attitude greatly impacts results. read more

Wow, this place is still around. I actually spent about 6 months here back in 1999. I was a 20 year old high school drop out with absolutely no direction, no home, and no job. I actually don't even remember how I found out about this place. But I'm glad I went. I had to get away from my old friends. Initially, I hated it. Too many gangs and cliques. The dorms reminded me of country jail + military barracks. I wanted out! I did however stick around long enough to get my GED, thank god. Long story short, I've gone on to get my Associates Degree and Bachelor's Of Science Degree. I have a great family, awesome career, and a place in the suburbs. Living the American dream! If you're lost and need an opportunity consider this place. It will suck at, believe me. Just bite the bullet and keep your main goal in mind. The time will pass and before you know it you'll be out of there. Take advantage of the education you get there to move on to the next thing (military, junior college, college, trade school, etc). I was a student in 2015, I did not know how to speak English, I was abused and discriminated when I defended myself, they expelled me and I could not even call the police to report, the director did not even listen to my testimony and when I called him he threw me the phone and said that he did not speak Spanish, They have a drug trafficking network run by young people in complicity with the managers who let them pass drugs when they go on weekends to visit relatives in the second building where the restaurant is 5 years ago, I hope those damn people pay all the damage, never send their children there read more

Under Adams and Associates: When I first started working for this company, I loved it but over time I notice that all they cared about are these two things: How many students can they get on center? And how much money per student can we get from the government? It was never about training a student how to do a job properly. It was more about degrading them. My first F&A Director was awesome. He saw great potential in me and that is why I moved up the ranks quickly. Then came the new F&A Director who wanted everything done his way without asking how did you previously do it and checking to see if it was a better solution which in most cases it was. In my honest opinion, that is what messed up Gary Job Corps along with a Center Director that doesn't know how to handle tough situations. I worked at Gary Job Corps for eight years. HR is corrupt as in if you report anything to HR then they automatically notify your Director even if it's about that Director so basically there's no confidentiality. They have people in positions that they shouldn't even be in because they're not qualified. I repeat I loved Gary Job Corps when it was under MTC and Rescare but now that it's under Adams associates they basically destroy the center. Nothing is being done about repairs to the center. My building had a roof leak for years and finally after I was laid off they got around to fixin it. No custodial staff. The pay wasn't right for some of the job titles as in the property clerks don't get paid what they should for all that they do. They have a no retaliation rule with Adams and Associates but when I turned my Director into HR, I was retaliated against and fired six weeks later because he will find every little thing to write me up. Even if he said I could do it he'll turn around and say no I didn't and then write me up. Everyone was surprised that they let me go during COVID because I was holding up a bunch of departments trying to get some departments working correctly with Property and all since I was the only one in Property working at that time. Here is the rundown on Gary Job Corps. If you are 16-20 years old, stay in high school or go back to high school.. We don't need teenagers, they screw everything up. I came to Gary the first time when I was 19 years old. I stayed for a month and ran away.... which was stupid. I did some other stupid things between then and 24 years old and then I decided to go back.. That was a good idea. The first week you meet some of the most awesome people ever, and some of the worst people ever. I was able to get my GED and my Driver's license. I trained to do office assistant work, I could get MOS certifications with the training that I have and the center would pay for it. I am now in an advanced course to be a Residential Advisor, or to work in the field of Human services to work with abuse victims, homeless, youth organizations, women's shelters... the list goes on and on. of course there are other areas of study at Gary Job Corps. There is: Computer Service Technician, Security and Corrections, CNA, MA, MOA, EMT, Welding, Machinist, Plastering, Cement Masonry, electrician. You have to be within the ages of 16-24 to enter the program. I would only recommend it as a last resort. I had a lot of issues before I came here, but with the skills that I have gained at Job corps I can leave with a guaranteed job as a Residential Advisor for the job corps center and they start out at around $10/hr at least. I have experience so I would make more than that. Free Room and Board! They pay YOU to get your GED or High School Diploma. And they give you money for staying there They give you money for clothing trips. Like I said "Last resort" If you can finish high school... do it but sometimes school just doesn't work so somehow you need to earn a living. Job corps can take care of you read more

If I could give a 0-star, I would. If you care for the safety and well being of your children, DO NOT SEND THEM HERE. My 18 y/o niece and her boyfriend currently attend the campus located in San Marcos, TX. Being the legal guardian of my niece, her grandmother learned about this "great opportunity for a head start in the professional field" and set to apply for my niece and her boyfriend to attend here. The counselor who walked my niece and her grandmother through the process made it out to seem like this was a God send to young adults looking to have a successful start in the job world, with all the training and tools available to ensure their success. From my niece's and her boyfriend's account, it's been far from it. Since the first week, the staff there on campus has been very rude to them and treat them like nobodies. On their first week of being able to come home for the weekend, they were unsure of how to obtain transportation to main gate, as it is a far walking distance from their perspective dorms to the main gate, they had asked one of the personnel in the office where to go for transport. The lady's response was, "We are not a taxi service, you'll have to figure that out." I usually pick them up and was told they were available for pick up after 3:30pm. I wait a little over an hour for them, I call them only find out they were walking to the main gate! It was the middle of July and it was especially hot that day. I drive up the road to find them and I get turned around by "campus security". At this point I am already upset and I explain to the lady, "they are walking in this heat, with their belongings in tow, get them transport!" I finally pick them up around 5:30pm, they're exhausted and dehydrated from walking in that heat. I contact the person in charge of the campus and explain the rudeness of the staff towards my niece and her boyfriend. She said she would look into the matter and to this day I don't know what came of it as she is not returning my calls. I usually talk to my niece about how her week was. She explains that a lot of the older teens and young adults come from troubled homes and backgrounds. On numerous occasions her belongings were pilfered and the girls she shares a dorm with, like to instigate fights with other girls there. The campus security who are hired to maintain the peace are inept at settling matters. At the risk of sounding like harsh criticism, they are as incapable as they look, many of them heavyset individuals with no air of authority about them. My niece's boyfriend even told me that some of the students were fashioning weapons in their shop classes without the instructor being none the wiser. That or the instructor didn't care. It gets worse though. Fast forward to the week of October 15, 2018. After picking up my niece and her boyfriend, I learn there was a real bad gang fight between a group of students who were associated with the Crips and Bloods. It was so bad that the police were called in, since the campus security were unable to handle the situation on their own. Even the police struggled to alleviate the situation. Additionally, my niece discovered a girl on campus had overdosed in her dorm, but she wasn't tended to until 14 hours had passed, even though my niece had reported to the campus security! What's more is that none of the parents were contacted about any of these incidences (it happened earlier during the week), but my family and I are finding out about this the day I pick them up? This is a real pitiful attempt at saving face on the campus's part. Naturally, my niece and her boyfriend are apprehensive of being there, but since they have been part of the program for a while now, they want to finish up and are hoping to do so by the end of next week. I do not recommend this place at all, the staff and security there do not care about the safety and well being of the students. Though this place may be marketed as some kind of "free education and career training center", you really get what you pay for and based on these recent events, it's not worth it. This place violates so many codes and laws. I'm one of the students here, and I was homeless before I came here, so I have no other option but to be here and worry about my safety. It's not a huge improvement from being homeless. They say that they cover medical expenses, especially if it's an emergency, but I came to them with my arm looking like it had internal bleeding and had similar symptoms. The nurses treated me like I was an idiot, handing me a packet you'd give kids explaining how bruises work and how to treat them. Then when I wanted to get treatment off center since they didn't have the training or equipment to handle it, they said it wasn't their responsibility. They say if something is stolen from you and can't be returned you can have it reimbursed? Complete lie. It took me 2 weeks and an email to the center director to even get the theft report submitted and get them to start looking for my stolen property, because security wouldn't even allow me in the building to submit the report, and now I'm being told that I probably won't even be reimbursed for it. My friends have received rape threats, another gets beat by his roommates, and another was sexually assaulted and the center director threatened to have her expelled if she pressed charges. A staff member had over $300 worth of damage done to his car by students. The students were found, not expelled, and he didn't even get reimbursed to get repairs. A student got stabbed by another last month, that one that stabbed her wasn't expelled, it wasn't even reported. In fact that student's entire dorm was given McDonalds, as if they were paid to do it. Even the buildings are dangerous. Most have asbestos, some have lead paint, and nearly all of them have mold including the dorms that staff does not even try to fix. This has lead to me being sick nearly every other week. The majority of the staff does not care, some even harass students for any reason they can find. The cafeteria is a disgrace, having failed health inspections multiple times, and I can see why. Meat is almost constantly undercooked, my vegetarian friend hardly gets anything aside from a grilled cheese sandwich, a lot of the food and even the ice machine has mold, and clearly even the decently cooked meals have no nutritional value to them. I don't expect it to taste good, but I should not have to take 2 multivitamins a day just to not feel like nothing is in me. There is clearly favoritism on this campus. Going through security to have our bags checked, most students get half checked, not even bothering to actually check their bags completely, while everything gets pulled out of my bag, they pulls all my cards out of my wallet, and even then I have to put all my things through the bag scanner. This explains why so many students manage to sneak hardcore drugs on campus, weed is hardly the worse thing they get in. They clearly harass me since I've gone to the center director about how they treated me when I was trying to recover my stolen property. Also, not to sound sexist, I like that they have quite a few activities on campus. But most of them only the female population is allowed to attend, and any time there's a brawl at their dorms and clearly only women are involved, the blame is still pinned on the boys even if there were none in sight during the incident. Fights happen on a nearly daily basis and nothing is done about it. Security is an even bigger disgrace than the cafeteria is. Their driving is completely reckless, clearly often seen going over 35, not using turn signals, etc. I have almost been hit on several occasions, even when I'm not on the road. The majority of staff doesn't care at best, but is usually very disrespectful and threatening. This is definitely not the place to send anyone to. Adams & Associates is the worst to have happened to this place, since apparently it was a lot better before they got Job Corp's contract. Even though this was my last chance to really get somewhere in life, even I'm regretting having come here. Whatever you do, do not send your kids here, anything else would be a better option. read more

Is there such a thing as Bad Kids, maybe, however, this place is meant for YOUNG Adults that are ready to be adults in the world. Some of the young adults attending seem to believe they are still kids in high school (Which they Are NOT). Yes, the supervision is minimal (but, hey, common, have morals guys, don't always blame society for your fall downs or someone else) Many of us need to take responsibility for your own actions without pointing the fingers at someone else (Well, they do it, why can't I. "Really Moron") I'm going on my fourth child (young adult) registering at Gary Job Corp in San Marcos and All three till this day have ALL come out successful and with GREAT JOB opportunities and not to mention what they get paid now is remarkable. I'm very proud to say, this trade has helped my kids come out ahead in life and to be successful. The center, however, is not meant for our kids to get too cozy either, Like I told my own grown children that attended, just do what you're there to do and move on okay. Let's just say, If Gary is comfortable, some of y'all grown ass kids aren't ever to want to leave then. So, realistically they have to make these centers to be comfortable enough for them to Only sleep in, eat, wash learn and leave!! The key word is, get in do what you signed up for and LEAVE!!!!! But, when you do pack and leave make sure you leave legally State Certified, (yet another winner). Don't just sign up to be another student at Gary. This place is NOT for Bad kids, it's a place for young adults that are ready to face life and it's hard tactics that await them in the future. If you are not ready to be an adult this is no place for you. This place doesn't supply babysitters, nor will it care for your young middle school teenagers. Some reviews will not always be positive (unfortunately) but I personally can say, " I am utterly happy, all my three kiddos came out winners, I still got high hopes for my fourth son" and the best part is ladies and gentlemen none of them have student loans they need to pay back. So, with this said, it's up to them mom and dad and our support too. Stop babying these kids, teach and talk morals, future, finances and bills. ZERO...... I worked there for a year and a half. I quit be cause they protect there students but not their instructors. There are drugs and some really bad students. We had 5 riots between different groups. Girls get in fist fights which I had never seen. I had a student that could barely write and could not spell. Students stay as long as they can to get paid more money when they leave. I heard about sexual favors for passing classes. Our culinary instructor was caught off campus in a hotel room with a student. They did fire him. I feared for my life because of getting chairs thrown at me and the out of control of students. Oh they lie about their success rate. I actually contacted a national news network to expose all that was going on with our governments money. The producer wasn't interested. I went to a lawyer with two other instructors to see if we had a case because of the lack of protection on campus. All of us were severing PTSD. Enough said...... read more

Well I can say this I was hesitant at first about sending my daughter here after reading some of the reviews, but let me say this everyone has their own opinion and goes through different things. So how I see it is this place has been good to my daughter she hasn't had any problems, she enjoys school now! Not to mention this is an opportunity for her to complete high school and get a trade out of it as well! It's all what your child's intentions are in the first place for attending! I attended Gary Job Corps in 1992, with the intention of getting my G.E.D., Driver's License, and to receive training in Healthcare. The only things I got there were my G.E.D., and a healthy hatred for the facility, it's administration, and the general populace there. Job Training: I signed on for, and repeatedly requested, reminded, and flat out begged to be put into the Healthcare program; they dumped me in a typing class for two weeks, then arsed off. Driver's License: I was told during recruitment that testing would be available; they didn't have a single functional vehicle with insurance to test in, let alone an instructor on site. Safety: Unless you were willing to "Gang Up", you had to either learn to be invisible, or be extremely prepared to tactically re-educate potential assailants at a moment's notice. Staff Attentiveness: I was thrown out of the infirmary for hacking my lungs out into a trashcan; turns out that I had pneumonia. After two hours choking and trying not to die on the bleachers across the way from the infirmary, security decided to stop and see if I was alive. Luckily, I was taken to a hospital in San Marcos and treated for a week. When I returned, my belongings had been stolen out of my locker by the dorm supervisor. Pay: In the 5 months I was there, I received two "pay days", equaling $40. I never received the "Bonus" for getting my G.E.D. that was being done at that time. So basically, if you're over 18, need a jump on the world, and looking for a way to do it, my advice: Avoid the Job Corps, get your diploma/G.E.D. elsewhere, and enlist in the military. Sure, you'll probably get shot at, but at least you'll get paid, trained, cared for, and less likely to be robbed blind. read more

This place is nothing like it says on the website or talking to a rep, it is jail. They treat you like inmates. This place is only for kids who don't have any where to go. They send foster kids there and drop out. I thought it would be good for my child even tho she graduated, she wanted to go off to school but i couldn't afford college so i saw job corps on-line she got in and they treated her like a inmate, talk to her crazy and then when she wanted to leave they told her they was not going to help her, she was 5 hours from home and i had to find away to get her to the bus stop. So I had to send a cab to get her but talking to a rep before hand said that if a student didn't like it they can leave at anytime with out a problem. They are serving food for what 1000 - 1500 people? Im sure there are several that would not like it. My son do not complain about it. It's an excellent alternative to young adults that had gone thru difficult situations in their life and i really hope the government would have more schools like this one, if they really want to turn their life around they would take advantage of it. It's up to them must of the people are adults and they know what is good and bad by now. Guy lovers? You see that every where even in public schools but if identified then they will take necessary measures to the problem but not asking the congressman to close a middle school or a high school because of an employee braking the law why denied young adults of an education because of this. Gary Jobcorp Center was an amazing place, I really enjoyed my self. The school really taught me alot and I met alot of good people up there. The dorms that I satyed in was very nice it was just great. So do not listen to people when they say the school is bad cause its not true you have to go there to experience it first. I'm really disappointed in how gary and all involved convey info. I was told my son could be expedited in by the end of feb because of our homeless status. I have been calling and talking to people daily and as of now hes not even assigned to the feb 14th start date. I have been working on this for 6 months to ensure a safe place for him while paving his way to adulthood so hes never put in a situation such as this. Now for the programs they offer, they look great. I have spoken with a few students and they are very happy. The problem appears to be the staff everyone giving a different answer or promise. I was told that after I was told I would be expedited because of our status they did away with that. How do you give us hope then take it away without even an email:( I REALLY HOPE THAT HE GETS IN SOON AND THAT I CAN WRITE A BETTER REVIEW!! Hi my name is Fausto Alberto Castillo and I attended Gary Job Corps from September 1993 till May 1994 . I recieved my G.E.D. and my course certificate in Tile Setting in Gary Job Corps in 1994 . First thing you gotta remember is to pay your taxes on April 15 . The campus is run by the Department of Labor and the allowanceyou recieve is taxable by the Internal Revenue Service . What you gotta do when assigned to a dorm is to get out there and find out who to avoid because there are bullies who will push you around as if they run the place . If you run into this problem talk to the campus administartor about it and they should nip it in the bud . Either by moving you into another room or another dormitory altogether . Take the course you want to by choosing it as your first choice . If this doesnt happen talk to the campus administrator and explain yourself clearly. Eventually you should get the course you want to take . Do not leave cash or gold necklaces ,rings or bracelets in the dorm room wall lockers .
