I would not recommend Dr. Gary Hoffman for colorectal specialist to my worst enemy. I was examined by Dr. Hoffman and was disappointed in the level of treatment I received. To start, the evaluation lasted 5 minutes and it felt very rushed and was not thorough. I saw him after being referred from an E.R. visit for an abscess and fistula that was discovered. Dr. Hoffman failed to review my medical file and diagnostics. Instead of scheduling a fistulotomy surgery to help me, he decided to let me go finish antibiotics for a week and said "hopefully it will heal everything." However, a fistula is almost never treated with just antibiotics and almost always requires surgery. My case was more serious because a CT scan revealed an abscess in the fistula. Dr. Hoffman scheduled me for a follow up the following week and would not immediately schedule a surgery following my initial visit with him. All in all, I was getting the runaround and it feels more like a money grab where Dr. Hoffman is trying to bill his patients the most he can bill and prolong care at the expense of the well-being of patients. This is plain wrong. I will never go back to Dr. Hoffman and I hope you never schedule any appointments with him. Save yourself the trouble, your time and wallet but most importantly save yourself health. read more

Office is disorganized, I had surgery twice by Dr. Hoffman and went in for a follow up and honest to God he didn't recognize me. Part of my chart was missing and he argued with me about my medical history. After the appointment, I got up and walked out for good. I do not recommend him. (.) I found another doctor, that fortunately uses specialized state of the art equipment and my cancer is under control. I'm not sure if Dr. Hoffman is even up on the latest technology. ***WARNING - Read before paying $450 Emergency Appt Fee*** I walked out of Dr. Hoffman's office $450 poorer, still in pain, and honestly just stunned. I'd paid the hefty "emergency" fee expecting to be seen and treated--not just seen and given the option to delay treatment by 2 weeks or pay an additional $450 to receive prompt treatment. Over the phone, I made it crystal clear: I already had a diagnosis, I was in pain, and I needed to be treated. They said sure, if I was wiling to pay $450 on top of my PPO co pays, I could come in that afternoon. I agreed, thinking I'd finally get relief. Instead, Dr. Hoffman barely listened, did a quick exam, and told me exactly what I'd already been told by my primary. That was the whole visit. No treatment, no real discussion--just a diagnosis I already had. Then I was told to come back in two weeks to start treatment. Which was absurd. The whole premise of my $450 emergency payment was to get out of pain. If I didn't want to wait? No problem! Just pay another $450 to start sooner. The kicker? The treatment he recommended was a simple in-office procedure--nothing complicated, no prior authorization needed, and definitely not something that should've been delayed unless the goal was to squeeze more money out of me. Nothing was prescribed, no at home care protocol provided, no after care plan. All things UCLA set me up with a couple of days later when I sought care there. The clear intent was to keep me in pain in hopes I'd cough up another $450. It felt like a setup. A bait-and-switch. And the staff? They looked like they'd seen this routine before--and weren't proud of it. Bottom line: Don't pay this provider for an emergency visit expecting anything other than a diagnosis. You might get fast access to an appointment, but not to actual care--unless you're ready to double down to $900 bucks. Go somewhere that respects your time, pain, and trust. read more

I'd like to respond to Hoffman's office. I never said he drinks or uses drugs. I said he looked hungover. He looked disheveled. He did have rashes all over his arms. I don't think that was appropriate to be seeing patients in that condition. Everything else in my review was spot on. However, I did forget something. During another visit he diagnosed me with hemorrhoids and told me I needed eight more visits for injections. That seemed ludicrous so I went to another doctor the next day who said I didn't have any hemorrhoids. Hmmm. If you read other negative reviews I think you'll get the point. read more

This is to report an excellent surgery experience with Dr. Gary Hoffman. After visiting two other surgeons, I selected Dr. Hoffman to perform a procedure. Dr. Hoffman has vast diagnostic and surgical experience in this field. His practice is busy, but he was relaxed during my appointments and he gave me all of the time I needed to ask questions and to receive comprehensive answers. I was a little unsure about which of two alternative directions to take on the surgery, and Dr. Hoffman patiently explained the pros and cons of each path. The surgery itself went perfectly well. The pain level was radically less than I was expecting based on what I was advised to expect from one of the other doctors with whom I consulted. Dr. Hoffman under-promised and over-delivered. His combination of vast experience, relaxed and friendly demeanor, patience, understanding and appreciation of my surgery concerns and 100% perfect actual surgical result prompted me to write this review and give him 5 stars. His scheduling assistant, Angelica Orozco, is extremely competent. I found her to be very detail-oriented, reliable, responsive and diligent. Worst medical office I've seen so far. My husband went to see them twice, but his issue wasn't taken care of properly. Here are all the issues: - They charged him for regular consultation + extra when he asked not to. - When you call them they don't help and don't call back when you leave a message - They truly don't care about the patient. All they care about is to bill you for stuff you don't need - They don't cure the problem at the root. I would recommend anyone to never go there. They don't care for their patients and they don't treat the problems at the root. I'll keep this short. I went for help with a chronic fissure. First, his exam was extremely rough. I've been to other proctologists and this was, by far, the most painful. Almost an attack. Second. I was not given much information. Only that I needed to schedule a colonoscopy and another appointment which was very innocuous. When I asked what the second appointment was for, I got an very unclear answer. Third...unresponsive. I was traveling overseas and called and left a message requesting some sort of ointment...something to give temporary relief. No reply. Lastly, (and most unbelievably) the two appointments I was scheduled for were just assigned a day. No time given. I was told I would get called. No call. Nothing. In fact, the day of my coloscopy passed with nothing. I didn't show up because of it and still no call. I would definitely NOT recommend. read more

Years ago I saw Eiman Firoozmand (they all work at Los Angeles Colon & Rectal Surgical Associates)... but today I was calling to set up an appointment to see Gary Hoffman... because THEIR LA COLON WEBSITE CLEARLY STATES that they do a laser Hemorrhoid surgery, in fact, the article on this surgery is authored by Gary Hoffman. When I called I was told NO ONE AT THE OFFICE does Laser surgery... I said "your website specifically says you do and an article is authored by Gary Hoffman" - I was told this is a mistake and they have told the web person to take it off/they do not know why it is on there. THIS ALONE IS VERY STRANGE. Whatever... I decided since he also had a video about a staple procedure - I'd see him anyway. I was on hold... and on hold.... and on hold... then disconnected. I called back. I was then told I CAN NOT SEE GARY HOFFMAN... because I had previously seen Eiman Firoozmand. WHAT?!?! How on earth does this make any sense? It's is 2024... and we are not in a communist country... last I checked... They are not clones... they are different humans with different personalities, different skillsets, different bedside manners, THEY ARE DIFFERENT. And yet I am told IT IS OFFICE POLICY to not allow patients to change doctors? I literally laughed and said "WHAT?!?!?! THAT MAKES NO SENSE. "it's office policy is all they would say" Great... now I expect a phone call from both of them, because this is ridiculous. They can both explain this policy to me. (I welcome the phone calls... but won't hold my breath for that phone call... If they call, I will absolutely amend this review) This is just a warning... SOMETHING STRANGE is going on at this office... to post about a procedure they do not do... have an article on the website about that procedure by the head doctor... not to remove the article after they know it's there incorrectly (which seems to me that it is not in fact an article authored by the doctor... but rather a post made incorrectly by an overzealous web designer... that's the non nefarious take... it could of course be a way to get patients - rope them in on a procedure VERY FEW DOCTORS PERFORM... only to switch them to another one - I don't know the intent... but I know they have something on their website that they should not have there)... then to have the office policy that you can not change doctors... well... again... this is not normal. read more

This is an extremely unethical office. I was seen by Dr. Hoffman and scheduled for colonoscopy. All was going well until I received a package for my consent and preparation. In addition, the paperwork indicated that I would need to pay Administrative and Processing fee of $211 to cover their "Processing and office costs". The paperwork includes a section for you to agree to cover this fee, buried in language indicating that certain insurances will not cover certain codes. I pressed on to ask for the code that would be billed so I can check with my insurance. Well, there is no code and they just want you to pay $211 plus the 3% credit card fee. So in case you want to pay more out of pocket please go see this doctor. Can't really comment on any of his work as I cancelled my appointments and will not be returning to this practice. read more

I went to se Dr. Hoffman about what I thought was a hemmroid problem as i have had ongoing issues with this problem I had been seeing Dr. Hoffman many times for this problem When I went to see him this time he said it was not a hemmroid problem and prescribed a very envasive test Because I have a cardiac problem I contacted my cardiologist and discussed this with him and he told me to get a second opinion It turned out it was a hemmroid problem and it was treated immediately I will never see Dr. Hoffman again He would not return my phone calls and when I finally was able to reach him he said he did not have time to speak to me. "Nice to meet you." He told me, after seeing me not 10 days prior. He came to my appointments unprepared without viewing my chart b4 walking in. Appears to be a technique for cramming as many appointments in as possible for the money he can bring into his outfit He aggressively interrupted me when I would report my symptoms to him. He allowed 2 sentences. Thats it. Time's up. Made me not want to say anything. This might work in most cases, but not when he's seeing someone who's already had 2, 5 day hospital stays for the same symptoms,. He wouldn't know about the hospital stays because he hadn't looked at my chart. If he had taken a moment to listen on my first visit, he would've ordered a CT scan. But instead pressed on my abdomen and sent me home saying, "You could be getting better " I could be. But by not knowing my case, he pressed in the wrong area. On my 2nd visit, came prepared for my 2 sentences, to which he replied, " You may need surgery." This is a conclusion every other doctor I've seen have been saying. Now finally he orders the CT scan, but doesn't prioritize it and I have to wait a month out to get one. I've fired him. But he doesn't know it yet. "I will be making that determination." He boasted angrily, when I told him other physicians have put off colonoscopy due to inflammation. Nope. He's not making any further determinations. read more

You want to be able to trust your doctor's office and be treated with compassion when your dealing with sensitive issues. This office has very little bedside manner. From the moment you call to make your appointment to the moment you leave, the receptionists are short and put-out by your presence there. And now they are passing on the 3% fee for using a credit card, to the patients. My local pet store doesn't even do that and surely a surgery center can afford to cover the fees for taking credit cards. Instead they rudely suggest that the patients pay cash. What is this place? A pawn shop? Who carries cash or a checkbook? They argued with me about what my insurance would cover and made me pay $500 up front, plus 3% for using a credit card. My insurance covered $370 of it and on my next visit, they claimed that it hadn't shown up in billing yet, even though my insurance company informed me that they were paid. They wouldn't see me unless I paid my co-pay plus 3%. They were still holding my money! They should've applied what they owed me to my co-pay. And when they do reimburse me, I'm sure it's not going to include the 3%. I know 3% doesn't sound like much, but 3% of $500 is $15.00 that I won't get back, and if that's what they're thinking, than why don't they cover it? I don't want to be nickeled and dimed at the doctor. It feels very shady. Bottom line, I don't feel like a patient here, I feel like a commodity. It was bad when I first went there a couple of years ago, but it's much worse now and I will be looking for a new doctor. read more

Fool me once shame on you. So it's totally shame on me. Everything negative that is posted about this doctor is correct. My insurance completely covers me for a colonoscopy yet somehow they nickel and dime you (hundreds of dollars). It was so frustrating that I didn't even return to get my results. Perhaps if something is seriously wrong with me, he'll give me a call but I won't be seeing him again in person. I have finally (this has been going on for a year) resolved two charges that they SENT TO A COLLECTIONS AGENCY which my insurance agency finally rectified as the charges were already covered by Blue Shield but 'somehow' they kept billing me. And one was for anesthesia which I dare anyone to get a colonoscopy without that. Perhaps he is an adequate doctor but it appears that their business practices are akin to criminal. Needless to say, I will be going to a different doctor in the future and in my opinion I strongly recommend that you choose someone else for your medical issues. read more

First of all, Dr Hoffman is not bad. As soon as I've finally got the chance to see him, he listened to me with attention and had patience to hear all my questions, not rushing at all. Since my problem was very minor, and basically was already healing on its own, the doctor only recommended Hydrocortisone 1% and it actually sort of helped (problem did not disappear completely, but after baby delivery I hope it would go away) However, the services part at the office wishes to be better: 1) Although I came 10 min before appointment, I had to wait additionally 40 min till I was invited, then another 15 min inside the room waiting for the doctor to come and see me. 2) I had a simple pregnancy hemoroids visit, which was supposed to be covered by 55$ coinsurance fee. However, when I've received the bill, it also included "Surgical" and "Laboratory" fees - which is a nonsense! Doctor only looked at the problem and we had a 5 min chat with him. So I have asked my insurance to dispute this bill, and luckily they are doing it for me. It looks like a medical scam, which is very upsetting. So maybe even if the doctor is good, he should make sure that his prices are fair and his team is not cheating and respects customers time. read more

If you are reading this please do not seek out Dr. Hoffman's "care." His office is disgusting. The waiting room was dirty and the patient room was even worse. The walls were cluttered with artwork tilted and falling out of their frames, and there was a broken mirror. In front of me was a reproduction of a painting of a nude woman laying down with her back towards me, her large buttocks centered in the frame. On the middle of the counter was an open jar of lube/vaseline! This is not the experience I want to have at any doctor's office, but especially a colorectal specialist. Dr. Hoffman came in disheveled, pointed to the woman in the painting and told me to "do that" on the table. He did not offer any advice or help me to fix my condition. He was dismissive and entirely unhelpful. When I left he gave me a fist bump and told me I was lucky to be leaving with his prognosis. I've never left a rating for a doctor. He was absolutely awful and I will be taking the time to rate and report him wherever I can, because this was so upsetting. read more

Dr. Capiendo is amazing! She takes her time to explain the colonoscopy procedure, is very attentive and present when she is with you and her office runs on schedule. The day of the procedure her bedside manner is just what a patient needs when about to experience their first colonoscopy. She greets you before putting any anxiety you may have at ease and spends enough time after the procedure to carefully go through how the procedure went, your results and recommended follow-up based on those results. 1. Let's start with the facts -- without any detail, I couldn't sit, walk or stand and i was at my last straw looking for anyone within a 5 minute drive who could help me. I called Dr. Hoffman's office, gave them the scenario and nearly begged to see him. They called me back in less than 10 minutes that they would squeeze me in at the end of the day. Wonderful. 2. Dr. Hoffman was extremely attentive, asked quite a few questions giving me the impression that this was going to be a team effort, and he listened to everything I said. Without this being a very simple diagnosis, he gave me medication and told me to come back in 24 hours. The medication helped somewhat, but the next day, i was not much better. He clearly explained all my options, and I told him I wanted to stay on the medication over the weekend and tough it out, rather than move to a more aggressive approach so quickly. He even brought in another doctor in his office to help review the situation. He completely listened, answered all my questions and respected my decision. He also made sure I was aware that if things went south (pun intended), that I had options over the weekend with other available doctors. 3. He was thrilled today when I returned (4 days after my original visit) with 90% improvement. He was now able to diagnose the problem without a doubt, gave me a new medication and I'm on my way. The bottom line: This man really, really cares. I don't think that's a blanket statement you can make about ALL doctors. He saw me in a lot of pain and did everything he could to help, while keeping me comfortable with my participation and decisions in the process. Couldn't have asked for a better experience. Staff in the office is a crack squad as well. I don't think I ever waited more than 10 min in the waiting room or the exam room. read more

Ya see, if you're like me and gravitate toward the five-star yelp reviews, and if you were looking for a doctor of this nature, you'd probably find yourself at Dr. Stephen Yoo's yelp page, as did I. He works with Dr. Hoffman and no doubt merits all the glowing reviews. But I couldn't get in to see him, so I booked Dr. Hoffman who fortunately had an opening. I don't regret it for a second. In fact, I'm starting the five-star Dr. Hoffman campaign. That's right, you heard me. The line starts here, behind me. I give him two thumbs up! Unfortunately, one of them was up my tuchus! Allow me to explain exactly what happened at my appointment for a consultation at Dr Hoffman's office and scheduling an appointment for a procedure. #1) I waited 35 minutes for Dr. Hoffman. Too long. When I told his office staff - I needed to leave - they did take me into an examining room within a few minutes. #2) I had a consultation with the Dr. Hoffman and scheduled a procedure. #3) 48 hours before the scheduled procedure - Dr Hoffman's office called me or rather his surgical center called me - to let me know how much I needed to pay. I thought that was odd - because it was a routine procedure fully covered under insurance. When I asked why the expense, the response from the surgical center was: The surgical center is not in your network - just the doctor is! I of course was quite upset and cancelled the procedure. I spent over a month between the consultation and procedure appointment- so Dr. Hoffman's office wasted a month of my time causing me to delay the procedure. Dr. Hoffman office also wasted my money- my co- payment! Dr. Hoffman did phone me, offering another surgical center that would be in my network! I did say OK for them to call me and so I could see who the other surgery center was but I had no intention of going forward with Dr. Hoffman. I was shocked - at what had transpired- a Doctor that I made "special care" to confirm that he was in my network - would KNOWINGLY schedule a procedure at a surgical center that was not in my network. I did want to hear who the surgery center was that they were giving me as a second choice - since it was so difficult to grasp. I'm shocked since - they had a choice. I of course I did not schedule the procedure with Dr. Hoffman. Waiting 35 minutes for him should have given me a clue to the value he places on his patient's time and expense. He doesn't - Neither are important to him. read more

I was in severe pain and was recommended to Dr. Hoffman by my family Dr. Dr. Hoffman's staff was very helpful and got me an appointment right away. Dr. Hoffman diagnosed my problem immediately, told me some things I could do to help myself and gave me some cream. I felt better within 24 hours. Dr. Hoffman was professional and nice and his office staff made the whole thing smooth for me. I highly recommend him and although I hope not to need his services again, would do so without any worry, if I needed to see him. He was like a life saver. read more

The staff at this office is very professional and accommodating. When I was there one of the office assistants stayed on the phone with my insurance for more than a half an hour trying to get my insurance coverage straightened out. All the while she kept a smile on her face and remained very polite. Dr. Hoffman himself was extremely personable and put me at ease with his frank, yet humorous manner. His personal office where you meet him for your introductory consultation is remarkably warm and unthreatening, with pictures of his family and other personal effects adorning the walls and his desk. When it came time for the examination, he put me at ease with his contagious upbeat, joking manner and before I knew it he was done and I wasn't stressing out anymore. Most importantly, Dr. Hoffman is easy to talk to. He lets you ask as many questions as you want and doesn't rush you out to get to the next patient.
