Golden Delicious
Helene S.

Great place to pick apples or pumpkins on a sunny fall afternoon. Established in 1831, Garwood Farm and Orchard is owned and operated by the sixth generation of Garwood family farmers. Covering over 350 acres which include over 200 acres of apple orchards, there are so many seasonal varieties to pick. Currently, golden delicious, red delicious and idared are ripe. Call to check on current offerings. The other 150 acres grow a variety of peaches, strawberries, sweet corn, cucumbers, cherries and more. Fun also to be able to walk in the orchard to a true farm fresh Pumpkin Patch. Nice to walk and see the pumpkins actually growing on the vines and pick out the perfect Jack-o-lantern for Halloween. A open tractor transports you to the orchard. Masks are required. A bushel is $30. A peck is $8. Minimum purchase required. Try also the fresh apple cider as well. Check out the farmer's market, bakery or locally made jams and jellies, too.

Apple picking!

Great orchard with many different types of apples. We went during Columbus Day/Indigenous Peoples Day weekend and there were still a lot of apples to pick. Loved that they have the orchard or their farm stand store. When we went they had the most beautiful mugs and large pumpkins. The employees were helpful and the tractor ride was a delight for my 2 year old. I would like to visit during the late summer when you can fill your large bushel with fruits and veggies. Worth the drive from Chicago or SW Michigan. * delicious apple cider donuts.

Great orchard with many options of fruits and vegetables to pick or buy! Family run and on the 6th generation of Garwoods. To pick: There are many kinds of apples, eggplants, tomato's, string beans, raspberries, black raspberries, blackberries and more! Trailer: Take the trailer to your picking destination or ride it just for fun. Let the driver know where you are picking from and they will take you there. I would suggest wearing sunglasses because the dust from the trailer will blow into your eyes and mouth (for some day when you won't be required to wear a mask). There is the option to leave a tip for the driver. Inside to purchase: They have everything from jams, candy apples, donuts, apple cider, all their fruit and vegetables, gourds, corn, pumpkins, etc. COVID-19: they have signs that say to wear masks when in the building, in line outside, on the orchard and tractor. They also have hand sanitizer near the check out, though standing 6 ft apart was not enforced indoors. I'm not sure if there is a cap to how many people can enter the building when it is busy.

We recently visited Garwood Orchards while we were on vacation. It was our first visit there. The staff was warm and welcoming. They had a store with mums, produce, and such. You could purchase bagged apples or pick your own. We took a short ride to pick our own. There was a good variety of apples. The orchard was well maintained. We would highly recommend Garwood Orchard if you're looking for a place to go apple picking.

The place is definitely great! We go here twice a year. My kids love it when its berries season. They get to pick the strawberries by themselves. During the fall, I really love their apples varieties. Love love love the gala apples. Its so sweet! They have tons of pumpkins size. From big to tiny cute pumpkin. The last time we went here, they have live music near the strawberries. Its pretty entertaining. The picnic place is HUGE! Plenty of picnic tables. We always bring our own food, but if you happen don't bring any, they do have corn, hotdog or pumpkin donuts. Don't forget to try their gelato stand! My kids won't leave this place until they get gelato.

Red raspberries from Garwood Orchards

Had a great time, picked out lots of delicious looking fruit including: strawberries, blueberries, red raspberries, and sugar snaps. We were also directed to the green beans that were very abundant and delicious looking. The store had so many dessert options behind the bakery that used the fresh farm fruit. Overall great experience and would come back again for different crops in future.

Above all else I love the fruits here. We had fun with the whole family. You can also get baked goods and goodies from the gift shop.

The donuts and apple cider are my favorites! So many yummy, homemade choices! You can pick yourself or buy produce already picked.

I also love that they didn't try to tack on an additional charge to take the tractor as some other orchards do.

Creme de La Crop - Great little place.

Creme de La Crop

Full disclosure: I know next to nothing about farming co-ops or community-supported agriculture. It…read morewas only recently that we made our first foray into the world of CSA. So, take all of this with a grain of salt since I'm a total noob at this. Through Creme de la Crop though, I experienced my initiation. The way that it works is at the beginning of the season (in our case late spring) you enroll into the share program signing up for either a Standard Market - selection of basic farm produce - or "Epicurean" - larger amounts of every fruit and vegetable they grow. Paying a flat fee (2014 Standard full $720/half $360) you then weekly receive their finest summer produce for 18 weeks. Simply pick up your weekly take of assorted veggies at one of the designated locations. Easy peasy. The upside: The quality of the produce was crazy good. This wasn't your standard supermarket fare--not by a long shot. Everything we received over the 18 weeks was organic, grown on their farm, and from taste, touch, sight, and smell absolutely phenomenal. Green beans, peppers, lettuce, carrots, eggplant, cucumbers as well as various herbs...and much more. We were rarely disappointed with what we got. The people and actual farm were also part of the experience. Most of their produce is grown right there along US 30 just west of town. The actual farm leaves little to be desired. It's basically a collection of rundown old buildings and a few muddy fields. But, the staff and volunteers running it are amazing. They manage to create a unique atmosphere of education and community that really draws you in. They are helpful, friendly, and passionate about their work. The downside: As much as it pains me to say it, it just isn't practical or economical. First off, what produce you get any given week depends entirely on what they are harvesting. One week you get crap load of beets and then next you're swimming in beans. If there are veggies you eat regularly, you'll probably find yourself looking elsewhere many weeks. You also frequently are trying to figure out creative ways to use up the unique produce you end up with. Edemame, chard, kale are interesting, just not the most useful. Second, it's expensive. Some may argue that the quality as well as the environmental sustainability are worth the extra cost, but it was hard for me to swallow. There are other ways to procure organic produce without overly burdening the budget. Finally, there's also the convenience factor to consider. Creme de la Crop does a lot to make it easy to get your hands on your weekly allotment with multiple pick-up locations around Valpo. But, you still work around their schedule and accessibility. In the end it's worth it if you're really committed to CSA. Having principles costs money. If you're willing to pay the cost, a CSA is an excellent way to get great fruits and vegetables and support environmentally sustainable agriculture. If not, find yourself a Whole Foods somewhere.

While visiting my sister in Valparaiso, I grew curious after driving by a few times. Finally i…read morestopped by and purchased some farm fresh & organic eggs, jam, maple syrup, and honey. The owner was an extremely friendly woman who allowed me to check out their chickens and goats. Next time im in town from Florida i will most definitely be stopping by again.
