Make sure to shop around. There are few stores in the Houghton/ Hancock area that sell furniture. There is also a store in Calumet. Make sure to shop online to price check. Also, I learned the hard way that getting the best furniture price requires haggling.
The two good things I can say about Gartners Gallery is the selection is much better than Kirkish Furniture, and the employees were polite. However... I overpaid quite a bit for the furniture I bought from Gartners. I bought an entire living room set and asked for a discount since I was buying multiple items. I received a "discount" on each item, but later found online that each item was severely marked up. I found my couch on Amazon for $300 less and my coffee tables for less than half the price online.
I totally understand paying a premium to be able to see furniture in person: storage, employee wages, overhead, etc. However, the whole pricing scheme at Gartners is a game. They start with an inflated "normal" price and then run a "sale." What I didn't know is that there is a HUGE room to haggle for a better price below the "sale" price.
When I was about to pay I asked to see bed frames. I liked one but it was $1,000. I said, "No offense, but I saw a similar one at Kirkish for $600." The sales person said, "I could go as low as $750 but no lower." I thought that was weird to go 25% lower than the "sale" price. This caused me to look up prices online.
I went back and asked for store credit based on being overcharged due to my lack of understanding that I needed to haggle. I was told that Gartners does not match Internet prices and that I already received a "sale" price. This was a little short sighted if you ask me because (a) I won't go back there, and (b) this is the first review on Yelp.
Again, Gartners has a good selection but the "sale" prices are heavily inflated. Try to haggle as much as possible if you go there. read more
