American Legion Park is probably the iconic park of Stockton. I'm not saying it's the best park,…read morebut it is the park that most resembles "old" Stockton in that the entire city used to congregate here for the 4th of July decades ago. First, Stockton wasn't always on the wrong side of a population 350k or more. I remember when we were about half that in the early 80's. This park was the premiere location to hang out and just relax. There really isn't much for facilities here. There is basketball, a kids playground and that's about it. The grassy bank protecting the 'hood from flooding is kinda cool because it provides an interesting pathway around the park and the Smith Canal. There are some concrete tables and benches if you want to throw a quick BBQ or just share some beers during COVID. You can fly a drone and get some great pics of Stockton from about 500 feet. You can throw a frisbee and lose in said Canal. You can talk a dog for a nice walk around and double back or shoot all the way to Pershing and make a loop. In short, this isn't the largest, most beautiful, or even the best facilites, but the location matters and this place used to the heart of Stockton when times were a lot better (kid of the 80's, greatest decade ever)!

Best money I've spent for the kiddos in a while, oldest (5, the middle (4) and the youngest (1 1/2) were all entertained and nobody wanted to leave - they could have stayed all day! I especially appreciated that they have a separate toddler/younger kids area which made it feel safer and less overwhelming. As a parent, I noticed the staff did a good job keeping things organized and the overall environment felt pretty clean. There were also plenty of places for parents to sit while still being able to watch their kids play, which I appreciated. But it's either my hubby, I, or the both of us with my baby the whole time. Parking was easy too and check-in was pretty smooth. I do wish the place was a little bigger, but I also understand indoor playgrounds are probably expensive to maintain and operate these days. The park has plenty of open green space, mature trees, and shaded pathways that make it a pretty easy walk even on warmer summer days like today. It has a really chill vibe and there is usually a good mix of people and families hanging out in and enjoying the space. There's a lot of community in this area and it definitely shows at the park. It's been a while since we've visited, and this is my first time here since they reopened the pool last year. It was incredibly busy in that area of the park so we made sure to wander over toward the rose garden where it was much quieter. The roses are in bloom and I took a cute photo of my dog in front of them this afternoon. Even though there were a lot of people at the pool area, the rest of the park had plenty of open space. It can definitely get crowded on the weekends or when there are big events, but typically you can find parking on the street all around the park or in the adjacent neighborhood. Just a few steps away. I did also notice the new self-cleaning restrooms that they installed at the park as we were walking by. You can see the digital displays from the sidewalk, but I did not need to use the restroom so I didn't check them out for myself.
