Otherwise, we make the 40-minute drive to Joplin. Two years ago, my daughter had a herniated disc in her back. At Via Christi, they told her it would heal on its own and didn't even give her a day off work. It didn't heal. We went to Joplin, and she had surgery a month later. I also went there for severe hip pain, barely able to walk. They said it was just water on the joint and that it would resolve on its own. It didn't. Two months later, I ended up having a hip replacement. I had hip dysplasia and was bone-on-bone by the time Via Christi saw me. An orthopedic surgeon scheduled surgery within days. The final straw was about six months ago. I have a partial bowel obstruction, and my gastroenterologist told me to go to the ER. I live in Pittsburg, so I reluctantly went to Via Christi (now Mercy), hoping things had improved under new ownership. They hadn't. When I arrived, the staff basically said, "What are you doing here? What are we supposed to do?" I explained my doctor had sent me there, but they treated me terribly--like I was wasting their time and inconveniencing them. Yes, there are some decent staff members, but most have the worst bedside manner I've ever seen. After everything I've been through, I won't trust this hospital again until real changes are made.

But when you have an ill family member (in this case, my dad), you want it to be at least tolerable. And that's what this place is. The people are friendly and it seems like an okay place. The cafeteria has soft drinks/tea for $.75 and $.50 refills, so that's not bad. They have a $3.00 breakfast special, and although I added a biscuit, it bumped it up to a $5.00 breakfast. It wasn't that good of a biscuit. They say they have free wi-fi but I never could get it to work. I didn't ask if you needed a password, as it wasn't that big of a deal, but if I were going to be there a long time and had my laptop, I sure would! The elevators and stairs are clearly marked, and easy to find. The fourth floor waiting room was fine. We would head down there when the nurses needed to take care of dad's personal hygiene. I really wouldn't wish anyone to have to stay here, either as a patient ot a family member visiting a patient, but if you do, at least you know you'll be in good hands.
