I am the self-appointed king of speakeasies so I was excited to try out my first one in Rome. Ambiance (4/5): As a speakeasy snob, I'll say that Blackmarket Hall isn't a true speakeasy as the name of the bar is listed outside of the establishment. Thus, there's no element of surprise or a creative way to get inside. You just walk in and then you're treated by the host. Once you get inside, things improve. Blackmarket is a long speakeasy with multiple floors. There are some really cool rooms and some awesome nooks and crannies to sit in. They're not all created equally though. We were sat right outside of the door which isn't the most exciting place to be. Especially because the host uses a walkie-talkie to communicate with other members of the staff so it's loud and annoying. Service (3/5): We came on a weekday so we weren't expecting to need a reservation. That's part of why we didn't get better seats. Though it did seem like there were open spots. Make a reservation here just to be safe. That's the lesson I learned. Standard Italian service. Not terribly friendly or efficient but you make things work.
