Chapmans Nurseries is a garden centre and Tea Rooms just outside the centre of Rosliston, opposite…read morethe Forestry Centre. Chapmans is the best garden centre in the local area; there is a good variety of plants, shrubs and trees, which are reasonably priced and very healthy. The tree section in particular has a wide variety of plants, more impressive than most bigger garden centres. The members of staff are cheerful and helpful, and genuinely understand about the plants they are selling, which is a novelty for a garden centre! It also sells mainly plants and plant related products, rather than the myriad of 'tat' that most garden centres sell. The Topiary Tea Rooms is set in a small wooden building, but has a beautiful outlook onto a sun-soaked patio where wild birds feed very relaxing. They only serve drinks and cakes, but I would definitely recommend the cheese scones. As the weather steadily improves, I would heartily recommend Chapmans as a place to go to rejuvenate your garden.

If ever their is a problem with any plants there is never an issue with exchange, which I never had. Kevin is top guy, as is all the staff and their knowledge of all plants is so very helpful. Whenever we visit we always come away with some plant regardless of size, and most important for us, a great cup of tea / coffee and a lush scone or cake all home baked. What can I add " Well done staff and management at Chapmans " You won't be disappointed.

Bretby Nurseries is a popular garden centre on the outskirts of the picturesque Derbyshire village…read more The access road to the car park is punctuated by speed humps and rather over the top billboards, in my opinion needlessly drawing your attention to their products. By now you are in the garden centre and you will see the products first hand, making the billboards more obtrusive than useful. The main car park has easy access diagonal parking spaces, as well as a huge gravelled overspill area. Descending to the entrance passed preplanted baskets and troughs leads you into the main area, containing tools, items for garden birds, houseplants and at the current time, spring bulbs. To the rear of the main area is a well stocked aquatic store selling pumps, fishfood, water plants, as well as a good range of pond liners and of course fish. The outer area has a vast range of plants, which are competitively priced and of good quality. Most common flowers, shrubs or trees can be found easily. The covered area also contains bedding and alpine plants too, as well as bags of compost. Adjacent to this area is a large cafe that has recently had a bit of an overhaul. There is a good range of both hot and cold food, and a decent range of drinks, including alcoholic beverages. Pretty standard fare - roast dinners, jacket potatoes, scones, sandwiches etc. The cafe is also punctuated with sturdy and reasonably priced oak furniture, that can be delivered. The cafe also has external seating leading you into an area selling garden sculptures and brightly coloured patio pots. A well stocked shop rounds off the garden centre, selling a vast range of cards, handcrafted jewellery, bargain books and a range of items perfect for gifts. All in all, one of the better garden centres in the area.

Bretby Nurseries is a lovely place to go at the weekend…read more The carpark is very easy to park in; the spaces are diagonal :-) The Aquarium area has got a wide vareity of supplies and the staff there are very knowledgable. They helped me when I wanted to buy a filter for my fishtankand actually showed me a cheaper product than the one I was looking at. Very honest! There is a cafe there incase you want a coffee or a snack whilst walking round. It's a good place to go at Christmas, too. The displays are very interesting!

Byrkley Park is a large garden centre just outside Burton on Trent, near Rangemore, accessed by a…read moretree lined lane, and geographically near to St Georges Park. The car park is spacious and well landscaped with mature trees and even its own small traffic island. Inside you are initially taken into an area of house plants, solid oak furniture, and a myriad of products for birds. To the left is the Topiary Restaurant, a large spacious eating area, with variable seating, that attracts many visitors, it has a good range of hot and cold food, and drinks. The roast dinners are fairly impressive, but other products can be a little hit or miss, the cakes we had today were lovely, the brownie with hazelnuts and the non-fat fruit cake were packed with flavour, but on some visits the cakes have been so dry, they have been virtually inedible. The outside plant area, is the main reason we would come to Byrkley, the range of plants, trees and shrubs, as well as other products like gravel, fencing and pots are very impressive. But most of all the plants are healthy, and competitively priced, if you're prepared to buy a smaller plant and let it grow on. There are always pretty good deals, if you like to buy multiple plants. Inside is a good range of other garden items like tools, garden furniture, seeds etc. Byrkley also has a range of other areas, selling different products, not normally associated with a garden centre. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, I like garden centres to just sell plants and maybe have an adjoining cafe, but I suspect that would not cover the overheads of such a large concern. So, Byrkley also has three clothing areas including Cotton Traders and Edinburgh Woollen Mill; old fashioned, yes, but I am not their target audience. They also have an area selling pictures, cards, candles, ornaments etc. There is a small jewellery shop selling some unusual items, that would be perfect for a gift and a craft shop, that has expanded rapidly, with the advent of people making their own cards, painting etc. There is a small bookstore, which is good for a bargain, a delicatessen selling amongst other things, homemade chocolates and an impressive cookware shop too. The staff are friendly and offer useful advice particularly on the plant side, which is refreshing, and they do offer a garden club scheme, where you can pay £10 per year, and amongst other benefits gain 10% off all plant related products.

Although they do sell some very very nice things so I suppose you would expect to pay a bit more. The aquatics area is very cramped but the staff really know their stuff and will give you advice if you ask for it. I usually go here if I want to buy an unusual present for somebody (they sell very nice ornaments/vases) I would reccommend this garden centre to somebody who wants to spend the day relaxing, walking around looking at nice flowers and gifts.
