Bretby Nurseries is a popular garden centre on the outskirts of the picturesque Derbyshire village. The access road to the car park is punctuated by speed humps and rather over the top billboards, in my opinion needlessly drawing your attention to their products. By now you are in the garden centre and you will see the products first hand, making the billboards more obtrusive than useful.
The main car park has easy access diagonal parking spaces, as well as a huge gravelled overspill area. Descending to the entrance passed preplanted baskets and troughs leads you into the main area, containing tools, items for garden birds, houseplants and at the current time, spring bulbs. To the rear of the main area is a well stocked aquatic store selling pumps, fishfood, water plants, as well as a good range of pond liners and of course fish.
The outer area has a vast range of plants, which are competitively priced and of good quality. Most common flowers, shrubs or trees can be found easily. The covered area also contains bedding and alpine plants too, as well as bags of compost. Adjacent to this area is a large cafe that has recently had a bit of an overhaul. There is a good range of both hot and cold food, and a decent range of drinks, including alcoholic beverages. Pretty standard fare - roast dinners, jacket potatoes, scones, sandwiches etc. The cafe is also punctuated with sturdy and reasonably priced oak furniture, that can be delivered. The cafe also has external seating leading you into an area selling garden sculptures and brightly coloured patio pots.
A well stocked shop rounds off the garden centre, selling a vast range of cards, handcrafted jewellery, bargain books and a range of items perfect for gifts. All in all, one of the better garden centres in the area. read more
