"1983. By the end of the year almost 3 million of the Cabbage Patch Kids Toys have been adopted but demand has not been met. The Cabbage Patch Kids Toys go on record as the most successful new doll introduction in the history of the toy industry. In December, they are featured on the cover of Newsweek."
This was something I wasn't interested in the slightest, but I remember my sister and many other males and females were interested in.
These dolls were much more lifelike and cuter than Barbie. These were also dolls that kids and teen took with them to school. Not only do I remember people leaving them with other friends as a babysitter, but seeing the first stages of being a parent in the eyes of a kid. Worst thing to happen as a kid was get your Cabbage Patch Kid taken away from you as punishment for misbehaving back then.
The ads poured out of the television and radio for people to buy them and many did. Like the quote I found online says, the demand for these toys were more than the company could handle.
Many of these toys were put on back order and I can only imagine how it was for parents looking to get one of these toys for Christmas. My parents I am sure were waiting in line for quite a while to get their hands on one my sister hinted at.
I don't remember when the craze died down, but I think introduction of The Garbage Pal Kids had a huge impact on the Cabbage Patch Kids.
Does anyone remember Garbage Pail Kids Cereal? Nasty, but funny.
Cabbage Patch Kids were not amused one bit by The Garbage Pail Kids's shenanigans and ended up filing a law suit against the Topps Company. Cabbage Patch Kids won a $30 million dallor lawsuit for copyright infringement. In short, The Garbage Pail Kids faces looked to much like The Cabbage Patch Kids.
"The Cabbage Patch Kids' First Christmas was number one in its time slot on ABC. 1986: The first talking Cabbage Patch Kids. 1988: Coleco Industries, filed for bankruptcy, but dolls continued to be made, with the licensing rights being granted to Hasbro Industries and later to Mattel."
The companies to sell these dolls are:
