I have mostly interacted with the young woman there who is incredibly knowledgeable about some local and underground music. It is important to note that The Business is not a dusty-crate style record store. Almost all of their vinyl is new or in tremendously good shape. Prices reflect this, but are not unreasonable. Also, this isn't a shop to go hunting for classic rock or bargain bin grails. Their selection is mainly newer artists but with a wide range of genres to be found. Seriously, their bins are bulging with new artists waiting to be heard. They also buy and trade. However, I wouldn't advise bringing in moldy Christmas/Polka/Slim Whitman LPs expecting to leave a penny richer...

When I moved up here I quickly found that film viewing needn't be hampered. What a great place to rummage around for old films, some wonderful classics from Europe and Asia, old TV shows. I've found old Roy Rogers westerns and noir thrillers, Abbott and Costello features, Charlie Chan mysteries, Rene Clair screwball comedies, as well as the latest releases. For a while I thought this place was going to close, but they are still hanging in after having moved a couple of times. All the help you need from the friendly staff, even to checking to see if something not carried is still available in any format (they even offered to order something for me). Late charge (over 7 days for regular titles) is just 50¢/day.

If you're in Victoria and love vinyl, you owe it to yourself to stop in and see his selections, some of which are quite rare! I picked up two super obscure Pink Floyd variants from him, and if it wasn't for Supreme Echo, I'd have never even known they existed! I did pretty good with the exchange rate, coming from the US - we even made a deal on some 8-track tapes that he just happened to have on hand! Well worth the price and the time spent.

It's a tiny little place that's packed with a diverse selection--from '80s new wave to jazz, from metal to country classics, from Bowie to Branigan and back again, and pretty much everything in between. I was particularly tickled to find a bunch of Polish pop and garage rock from the '60s and '70s there in the bins, a lot of neat stuff I'd never seen before. The selection is great, the prices fair, and the guys working the shop are friendly and fun to chat with about music. If you're in Victoria and you're into vinyl, it's definitely worth venturing a few blocks north of the downtown core to check this little place out.

I wait near the door because in Vancouver its bad form to burst into a shop without offering to check your bags (I assume the shoplifters are as bad if not worse here. I'm like "wow! I can't wait to have a quick shop. I'll just set my bags down here" my bags have viable harbour air laptop tags and I'm carrying a, albeit quiet, luxury handbag. Oh and wearing cute new furry moon boots. I was a bit wet from the showers outside. But it would be a very huge stretch to think I was transient/homeless. Regardless of what class or financial situation a person is, I would want my.retail front line representation to treat all visitors with respect and to serve all visitors until the time we close as advertised.. That said, our associate responds to me "Nope I'm going to start cashing out amd cleaning up, come back tomorrow" I look at my phone and say (respectfully) "it's 5:54pm, looks like I've got 5 mins to check it out after all ha-ha!" He's like, "sorry I'm already closed' and grabs the sign and carries it in. So I was totally insulted, tbe way he looked at me and the snobby face he made...I felt..judged? So I respond "you know I have 5 bills on me right now and prob would have spent it !?" (My husband would be late to pick me up so we decided I would wait for him at the local "casino nanaimo" down the street So I being the gambler I am, loaded up on cash before heading to the plane) I guess that offended him as he responds angrily: "if you are going to be like that. Don't you EVER come back" I'm like bewildered, disappointed "???woah man, slow down, really,?" He marches in angrilly fussing with his sign. Bangs the door closed and audibly locks it saying nothing. They carry a diverse selection of clothes, hats, shoes, wallets, bags and bathing suits from brands like Obey, Sitka, Brixton and Tom's. The prices are amazing and I often find great, unique pieces here that I don't find anywhere else. The store itself is super inviting and is a beautiful space, the staff are always helpful and welcoming. Whenever I visit I always feel genuinely welcomed and never feel pressure to buy. They are always really good to their customers, its an absolute pleasure shopping at Lucid, I wish we had more places like this in Victoria!

I was disappointed by the items on display though as I could not find any of the records I was looking for. After collecting records for almost 50 year, I have become very selective :-) A lot of their vinyl are in the cabinates and "in-the-back". Although the location of this particular shoppe is not convenient for me, I dropped in as I was in the neighborhood. It is seldom that I get this far east of Vancouver and seized the opportunity. The people who run the store were friendly and gracious in that they allowed be to rummage through the "not yet cataloged", newly acquired items, Thankfully I did manage to find 3 items of interest, original pressings of "Small Faces", "Deep Purple", and one other. Although I considered these items expensive, I believe that I paid what they were worth. Like everyone else, I like to get a better deal. They were kind enough to play the Small Faces on their system, it was a little beat up and I needed to verify it's value. However, their sound system was ... amm .... er .... gee ... really bad. The speakers seam to be located at the back of the store and it sounded like the music was being played in a tunnel. A lot of bass was heard, that's about it. All I could determine was that the record did not skip :-( A shame, really, as they have spent a fair amount on the reset of the shop. The quality of the sound needs to be improved. It doesn't cost much to put some quality speakers throughout a store. Would I come back??? Purely on speculation? No, it is a long way to go! I would come back if they would be willing to work with me and put aside the items I am interested in.
