Vientiane Grocery - Lao sausage with sticky rice

I ordered the Lao-style papaya salad and the Lao sausage, and both absolutely hit. The flavors are…read morebold, funky, and packed with umami definitely on the "stinky in the best way" side, which is exactly how I like it. Some days it's a hit or miss if i'm going to be honest, like for the papaya salad it's like they don't put enough padaek but 9 times out of 10 they do it good. The spot itself is tucked inside a small grocery store, which gives it a really homey, lowkey vibe. It's not fancy at all, but that's part of the charm you're here for the food, and it delivers every time. And if you're looking at my photo... ignore the seafood boil they don't sell that here, I just brought it into the mix because I was feeling extra and felt like a big back.

Came here to pick up some tom khao poon and Lao sausage. The customer service was great! The person…read moretaking orders on the restaurant side was also the cashier for the grocery store. The Lao sausage was really flavorful and huge. It came with sticky rice and jeow sam. The tom khao poon was a huge bowl serving! It came with lots of liquids and thin shredded papaya. I was hoping it came with eggplant, but it didn't. I also bought really expensive pork rinds to eat with it. I think the pork rinds was $6.99. I'll definitely be back to try their pak sien. Sorry I'm probably butchering all the spelling.

Fou Lee Market - After a long fast, gobbled two of these. Meat on a stick! (10/20/23)

My husband has deep sentimental…read moreties to this place--it was one of his old stomping grounds, where his younger self would come often for comforting Filipino and Asian foods. Revisiting it always feels special. The market looks small from the outside, but don't be fooled--it's surprisingly spacious inside with plenty to browse. The parking lot has limited spots so be prepared to circle or wait briefly. We stopped in just to browse and do some spontaneous shopping, and of course left with more than planned. I was thrilled to find a DIY taho kit (includes sago and arnibal) and grabbed two right away. A tub of Magnolia ube ice cream and banana turons were calling my husband's name, so those came back to the hotel with us too. If we hadn't already eaten, we would've grabbed lunch there--the food smelled so inviting. The cashier was especially lovely--friendly, chatty, and engaging with everyone in line. That kind of warm customer service is refreshing and definitely deserves recognition. We left fully content, happy to revisit a familiar place and score a few fun impulse finds. Fou Lee Market continues to be a comforting, nostalgic stop that never disappoints. Update: The banana turon was really good. Super crunchy exterior with sugar that hardened into a crisp shell instead of turning gooey. Inside was a whole banana, not mushy or overcooked or dry, which gave it great texture. Simple, well-made, and very satisfying.

I used to shop at Seattle Supermarket out of pure convenience, but their customer service and…read morerespect for patrons are severely lacking. I've had two highly disappointing incidents recently that made me decide to never return. First was a safety issue. I reached for fresh mushrooms on what looked like a newly installed metal shelf. The edge was incredibly sharp and sliced my finger, causing it to bleed. I approached a young female supervisor/manager at the front (possibly named Ema) not to complain, but to warn them so other customers wouldn't get hurt. Her only response was an indifferent 'Oh.' No apology, no offer of a band-aid or basic first aid. Basic human decency was completely missing. Second was a billing issue. Last week, I bought a bunch of bananas and was double-charged. I didn't notice the receipt until I got home, and since it was only $5.33, I didn't make a special trip back immediately. When I returned a week later and politely brought it up, a cashier called over that same supervisor (Ema). She bluntly refused to help, saying, 'You waited a week, we can't do anything.' I pointed out the mathematical improbability of two separate bunches of bananas weighing the exact same amount down to the cent ($5.33) to prove it was a double-scan error. Her dismissive reply was 'sometimes that happens.' I let it go because I didn't want to argue over a few dollars ('not a big deal' financially), but her defensive attitude made me feel like she suspected I was trying to scam the store over $5. It's not about the money; it's about the principle, common sense, and how you treat your customers. I will be taking my business elsewhere.
