The Galerie de l'Angle is closing :-( The Galerie was a non-profit Galerie run by a small group of artists, including the owner of the walls that was donating her space in memory of a late artist friend. The group would select artists to exhibit in the Galerie, and ask them to pay a very low 'fee' barely covering utilities and taxes. During many years, the Galerie also hosted for free a number of young artists (e.g. Beaux Arts students) from Paris or around the world.
Unfortunately this Galerie was also used in the past by 'Art Space Brokers' that would present an artist to the selection group, pay the very low fee but ask the artist for a 20X amount to cover the 'marketing costs'. Fortunately, the Galerie was able to kick out most of these brokers in the past.
Covid was quite hard for all the Galleries, and especially for the non-profit 'Galerie de l'Angle'. The vetting group was depleted, and the Galerie owner decided to retire away from Paris. I just learned that the owner is going to sell the walls late 2022 and that the Galerie would close in September 2022.
In the meantime, the low fee space has been taken over by a for-profit marketing organization that represent exclusively Korean artists. After renting from Galerie Joseph and other 'pop-up space masters' around Paris, that organization seems now to concentrate on a single location, the ex-Galerie de l'Angle.
According to one of the artists that exhibited in the past at the Galerie, the owner intends to re-create a non-profit new gallery (similar to the Galerie de l'Angle) closer to her retirement place in Rouen. I hope that the new space will be close to a street corner and will then keep a name 'Galerie de l'Angle 'cherished by all the artist and students that were allowed to exhibit Rue des Tournelles. read more
