While this is not necessarily a must-see museum for all visitors to Paris, it is well worth the trek to see the beautiful sun-filled (and climate controlled!) building, enjoy the peaceful grounds and view from the top floor, and of course see art. We saw the Calder exhibit, and as it unfolded floor after floor, room after room, it felt like a generously curated exhibit in a building which is itself a work of art. There is also a café and gift shop. I recommend getting tickets in advance, though there is still a line. Add in time to walk around the park. read more

As you depart Fondation Louis Vuitton following your visit you may find yourself asking whether you came to see the exhibit or the Frank Gehry masterpiece in which it's housed. Instead, consider it a 2-fer: you got to experience both the art and the building for a single price of admission. Both are exceptional. I understand that museum exhibits change but it's difficult to imagine a better use for the massive space than the Calder restrospective I enjoyed. It's so comprehensive that I'm certain I'll never see a Calder show that compares. I can't even imagine another museum that has the space to house such a collection. And then there's the building itself. Should you ever finish viewing the Calder exhibit, make your way to the rooftop. You were surely awed by the sight of Gehry's masterpiece from the outside but only from inside can you get to the terrace with its peek-a-boo, un-photographable Eiffel Tower view. Clearly, Gehry could have given us a dead-on site from which to take a selfie with that landmark in the background and equally clear was that he chose not to. The terrace itself is rife with views, just not that one. Don't miss it. Fondation Louis Vuitton had crowds without being crowded (except in the initial exhibit rooms) making it the perfect antithesis of a Louvre or d'Orsay experience. Other stuff: * Al fresco terrace cafe (with blankets provided; it was chilly in May) and a light-filled, artsy ground floor restaurant; * Best to purchase advance, timed tickets, easily done 1-day ahead. * When booking your ticket you can also reserve (for a couple additional euros) a shuttle to and from the site. The walk there takes about 15 minutes, is well-marked, and flat. I'd paid for the shuttle but didn't use it in either direction. read more

Went to visit the Calder retrospective. It's always a nice place to escape to from the hoards of tourist in Paris, but then you get the hoards of tourist at the park. The Calder show was nice, but some pieces were hard to appreciate due to the way they were being displayed. Really enjoyed Calder's painting. read more

A very cool building. We didn't realize there wasn't an exhibition so it was just a walk to tour the cool building. This was probably was the best case scenario because that meant no crowds and we were able to explore the place at our own pace and take our time. There was a lack of information of what we could see so we just followed the crown going up the floors and seeing the terraces on the roof. There was a VR experience but we didn't do that. You can also see the gardens but it started to rain so we just headed off to our next destination. read more

Among the best museums in Paris and the world. Inside a uniquely beautifully designed space in the western part of Paris, inside is contemporary art worth seeing. My friend and I walked in right at 11 am on a Thursday without a ticket. There was a line for walk-ins, but we only waited 30 minutes. Once inside, budget a few hours to explore each gallery, leaving time to sit on the rooftop Paris (find the view of the Eiffel Tower) and the lower grotto and fountains. I went to Paris in January and was able to catch the Mark Rothko exhibit at the Louis Vuitton Foundation. I'd read about the show in the New York Times and was happy I got a chance to see it. That it was in a Frank Gehry building accessible via forest was a pleasant bonus. The Louis Vuitton Foundation is an art museum and cultural center sponsored by the Louis Vuitton group. It's a new museum, open since 2014, that apparently cost €790 million to build. Some of that money went to my guy Gehry (I'm from Los Angeles, so I'm just gonna claim him), who designed this beautiful, grand, sculptural building at the edge of the Bois de Boulogne, a huge public park. I enjoyed the walk through the park from the Metro station, even on a pretty cold day. We had timed entry tickets for 11:00 on a Sunday morning, and the place was very busy the whole time we were there. We waited in a short line to enter and had to relinquish our water bottles. Mine was a cursed disposable glass bottle I never even figured out how to open, and I spent a good ten minutes of my one precious life dropping it off and picking it up. The exhibit was amazing, a rare, comprehensive Rothko retrospective featuring 115 of the artist's works, made possible by the LV group's CEO (currently the richest person in the world) and Rothko's son, who helped curate the show. I got a whole education on Rothko even without the audio guide, which my friend said was excellent. The layout was intuitive, with a smooth narrative flow. We explored the rest of the museum, too, which included some background on the building itself, with some Gehry scribbles and models thrown in the mix. There was also a rooftop with gorgeous views. We stopped by the museum store on our way out and it was quite nice. I didn't buy anything, but I enjoyed browsing. There were tons of heavy, beautiful art books, including one for the Rothko show. This exhibit ends the first week of April, so if you're able to visit before then, you should definitely check it out. It'll be long gone by the next time I'm in Paris, but I'll look up whatever's happening at the Louis Vuitton Foundation. It's bound to be something good. read more

I loved this building! I know the French are conflicted about it, and they absolutely have a right to be, it is an odd building in this location. But wow is it a cool experience to have a museum in. I went for the Rothko exhibit, and loved that they had enough space to really put on a fantasticlu comprehensive Rothko show. Not every museum would've been able to do this, simply because of the space needed. The entry system is kind of a mess, so that was unfortunate. And the cost check system is ridiculously slow. Both of those things could be greatly improved with a modicum of thought and probably not a huge amount of money. read more

Inhumane conditions in line. Even with reserved time slot tickets visitors had to wait in full sun on an 85 degree day for 20-30 minutes. Apparently the Louis Vuitton Foundation couldn't care less about its guests and couldn't afford to put up some tents and provide shade. Hopefully they have access to ambulance services because the conditions are ideal for getting a heatstroke. read more

This review centers on the restaurant Le Frank and the shuttle service. Le Frank (restaurant): A welcome spot in this spectacular work of architecture. While the lemon tart we ordered was outstanding, with just the right balance of tanginess to sweet over a crispy yet not-too-dense graham-cracker base, the ineptitude of the service was disappointing. With half the tables empty, we were seated at a narrow table between two other occupied tables (one with three sweet but antsy and boisterous small children), rather than at one of several empty tables at the curtain wall. And though she was pleasant, the server forgot to place our order. There was neither acknowledgement, apology, nor recompense. It's the only time in Paris we did not tip. Shuttle service: The inexpensive but not free shuttle improbably travels a great distance to the Arc de Triomphe, rather than to the nearby Les Sablons Métro station. With no firm timetable--about every 20 minutes, we were told when we purchased the tickets--after a group of us waited 30 minutes, I reported our wait to the guard at the entrance, who responded "pas possible." Once the shuttle arrived after a 40-minute wait, the driver announced we had another 10-minute wait until departure. In response to our vocal protests, he called his supervisor, had a five-minute conversation, and reluctantly left for a traffic-congested, 20-minute ride to the Arc de Triomphe Métro station. read more

I found myself completely by chance at The Fondation Louis Vuitton, in fact, I was going to the Jardin d'Acclimatation when I noticed a sign indicating that building, I then asked the park's hostess what it was, and she replied that it was an art gallery and that if I bought a ticket for this activity, that the entrance to the garden was free: No need to repeat it twice, in no time I was on my way to the foundation. 14 euros later, I entered this beautiful jewel of architecture. On the ground floor, you will find a restaurant, a souvenir shop and the first section of the current exhibition. In the basement, you will find El Grotto and the beautiful fountains of the building, but my highlight of this visit was to find out that the work of one of my favorite artists of the moment, Takashi Murakami, was exhibited on the second floor. Needless to say that I had an amazing time there: the patio is beautiful and the view of the business district and the Eiffel Tower is excellent ... I strongly recommend this place to lovers of arts and architecture. read more

I really loved this gallery! First off, it's totally about the building. You should check out what exhibit they have on in advance because they host temporary exhibits; they don't have a permanent collection on display. When I came, they were hosting a collection by Chinese artists including Ai Weiwei. The exhibit was pretty interesting, but the most captivating piece of art is the architecture by Frank Gehry. We really enjoyed our visit. We started at the top floor and worked our way down, checking out all of the terraces which feature views of the city, the sprawling park, and of course, different angles and viewpoints of the building itself and the fountain below. Be sure to check out each of the terraces. FYI: Don't miss out. On each floor, there's several access doors which take you different terraces for alternate viewpoints. There's several outdoor exhibits as well. We came on a frigid day, but I imagine on a warm beautiful day, it would be amazing to be out there on the terrace! It was unfortunately too blisterly cold and windy to fully enjoy it. Be sure to check out the really cool video of the building itself and it's building process showing on the first floor. It shows the building from a wide variety of viewpoints and different weather conditions. It's very cool to see it from the bird's eye view and also in relation to the Paris city center with it's cool zoom out scene. There's also a scale model of the building in the viewing room. Don't miss exploring the fountain and mirror display outside on the ground level. The large fountain looks like waves. It's so perfect with the ship-like building. Also, as an added bonus, you get free admission to the Jardin d'Acclimatation, a children's amusement park with small rides and attractions. read more

This review is for the restaurant primarily and to a lesser degree the museum as the permanent exhibits were being turned over. The on-site restaurant is a little steep for lunch but definitely worth it. I had the Composition Jardin. What a novel concept. I was brought out my own personal lazy susan upon which was placed a plate with pumpkin soup (which I gave to my husband), asparagus and a poached egg in broth (super fresh), corn with pomegranates and cheeses (cool and refreshing), and foie gras on toast (completely decadent). The meal came with water but I treated myself to a glass of vin rouge. The meal ended with an espresso, a mini cake, apple crumble, and the tiniest carrot cake I've ever had. read more

Beautiful building housing some pretty impressive artworks. My husband and I came here on a Monday afternoon about 5pm. There was a short queue but it moved quickly. Tickets were 16€ an adult. When we first arrived we went straight to the terrace while there was still daylight. It would cool to see the city and the sun setting while up there. The building is very interesting looking with its organic lines and minimalism. After the terrace, we enjoyed three floors of artwork. The rooms were big with lots of space and high ceiling. The time we were there, the museum was featuring Jean-Michel Basquiat and Egon Schiele. It was nice the place closed at 8pm so we could take our time looking everything. I say this was a really nice collection of art with not so much that it felt overwhelming. read more

They should have added some art and old historical works from Louis Vuitton. The name on the building and the actual art displayed had no connection what so ever. Went today (Thursday) on a whim. Had zero issues entering arrived at about 3:45pm and bought a ticket on site. Walked through the main entrance with no line. The building itself it quite impressive with it's architecture. I picked up the welcome map in English. Which doesn't tell you any details about the exhibits. It does however show you the floor plan of the museum space. Which meant nothing to me btw. Not to fear you're not totally lost. There is a foundation app you can download (for free) which will instruct you on what certain exhibits are. They also have free WiFi which is nice! The exhibit I saw today was the African Art. It went through various aspects of contemporary art and art from south Africa. The museum is not overly stocked to where you feel overwhelmed. They spaced things out nicely and transitions. There are several theater rooms with short films. Some are abstract other are interpretative. This was my first visit here and I would come back to see what other exhibits they have. Don't miss the roof top views (level 4) or the grotto (level -1). read more

How nice of Louis Vuitton to take all the money raised from their made-in-China overpriced accessories and build this fancy "Fondation" for us to visit. Ok, so I'm a bit jaded but the Frank Gehry - Fondation Louis Vuitton is architecturally stunning and offers some great views and photo opps from their many open-air terraces. The exhibitions were limited, but I appreciated the crowd control. You have to pre-purchase tickets because they only allow a certain amount of people each day. The formidable museum is just outside of Paris (accessible by Metro & bus), on the edge of the Bois de Boulogne. We absolutely LOVED this museum when we went on Wednesday afternoon. A friend of ours went there this past March, recommended it to us, and we're glad we took her advice. This place is a marvel. The location seems a bit off of the beaten path which might explain why it's one of the few places we've been to in Paris that isn't obnoxiously crowded. We breezed through the line and started at the bottom and worked our way up. The mirrors/lights/waters downstairs are fun, and also kept our daughter pretty entertained. What we love most about this place is its size--exhibits hit that Goldilocks sweet spot of not having too much or too little, so you can take your time going through without feeling overwhelmed, rushed...or gipped. We had to wait 15-20 minutes to get into the Yayoi Kusama room, but no biggie. It's a gorgeous building with plenty of space to explore outside and the gift shop has some really cute/cool stuff. Parent and toddler approved. We don't have enough good things to say. The people behind and in charge of this place know what they're doing. read more

What a place! How did I not know about this wonderful museum? First of all, start with the building itself, which is a Frank Gehry masterpiece. Add in, a fine exhibit of the who's who in the classic art world, and you've got it. The exhibit I saw was Chtchoukine, a Russian textile millionaire who visited Paris often and collected contemporary art from the late 1800s/early 1900s. What this means, is that you're in store for a fantastically amazing collection of Picasso, Monet, Rembrandt, Matisse and more. Extra credit goes to the multi-screen film that set the context for Chtchoukine's life as he inspired and acquired these works. The museum is not exactly in the center of town, but there are some easy options. We used Uber to get there, and caught the LV Foundation's shuttle back home. The shuttle drops you off conveniently at the Arch of Triumph and only costs 1 Euro. That leaves you plenty for that Vin Chaud (hot wine) to brace you for the cold commute back to your hotel. read more

We were told that the walk to the FLV wasn't recommended because there "aren't any sidewalks". While this is true a walk on the paths through the woods was quite nice. I recommend it. And if the line for tickets is long, consider going to the Garden entrance near the step fountain to the right. Security check and 3 Euro fee gets you to the rear entrance which is not heavily used. We visited the Fondation Louis Vuitton at the perfect time around 3p on a Monday. No lines with plenty of time to see the exhibits (2 to 2-1/2 hrs is adequate). A contemporary museum that's a change of pace from the Louvre, Musee D'Orsay or L'Orangerie (though I still prefer the latter three). The museum which opened to the public in Oct 2014 is unlike any other building I've seen. Geometric curves everywhere. Worth a visit just to see the work of a mastermind architect, Frank Gehry. Go up to the roof terraces and walk around. Staff are extremely nice. Photos (no flash) are allowed. Transportation from the metro: look for a shuttle stop on Ave de Friedland off of Place Charles de Gaulle and Arc de Triomphe (inserted a photo). Small electric shuttles (seats ~8, 4 adults can stand) run every 15 min to/from the Fondation (€1 each way). Check their website for more details. read more

The building is quite amazing. Just for the architecture and the terraces, I think the visit is worth it. I personally was not too impressed with the permanent collection, but that's totally subjective. And there is not that much to see either. I just don't enjoy watching a video of a naked man rollerskating, did not get the message. One of the levels is mostly about videos/music and I could not see the artistic point of most of it. A big part of the exhibits seems very elitist too me, and that's too bad. Still the space is beautiful and it's very pleasant to walk around and admire the building and the art (there are some interesting pieces from Andy Warhol and other famous artists). The entrance is fairly expensive compared to other museums but it also gives you access to the Jardin d'acclimatation. In the foundation, the restaurant "Le Frank" is a nice place where you can have a drink, lunch or dinner. We only had drinks and it is quite expensive (7 Euros for a drink or a tea.) read more

La Fondation Louis Vuitton is one of the most impressive marketing tools I've ever seen. Everything screams: "Look how powerful we are", from the size and design of the building by Frank Ghery to the extremely expensive and grand artworks in the exhibition rooms. Last weekend was my second time at the Fondation LV. The current exhibition is filled exclusively by Chinese artists. Not a coincidence if you know that China is one of the most important markets for Louis Vuitton luxury products. Though undoubtedly an exhibition executed with great professionalism, it didn't really touch me. Maybe the social and political criticism wasn't showcased on the level that I was hoping for (it's contemporary art in a one party system after all) or maybe the texts accompanying the works were too shallow, it just didn't really do it for me.
