Old Orchard Creek Farm - So many ripe blueberries!

My wife and I were trying to find something exciting to do for your daughter's birthday. We like to…read morego to the mountains often so we started searching the Lansing/West Jefferson area because a friend of mine talked about how beautiful the area is. We jumped on VRBO and searched until our fingers were tired. I finally came upon Old Orchard Creek Farm and the pictures of the house were decent, but the reviews left me intrigued. I booked the house for December 30 through Jan 2. My family and I had plans to ride to Clemson and see Duke play Clemson but the game got cancelled because of Covid. So i called Walter and asked him could we come early. To my surprise, the family that had scheduled to come had to cancel so the house was open. We left for Lansing in the afternoon of December 28th and made the nearly 6 hour trek across NC and finally arrived and found the property to be amazing. Believe me when i say the pictures do not do it justice. The house is really nice and well kept. I texted Walter and he told me how to get into the house. The house has really nice appliances and is very cozy. The downstairs has a small kitchen, living room and bedroom (1 queen) and a bathroom. There is also a porch off of the living room that overlooks the mountains. Walter arrived a few minutes later and greeted us and made sure we had everything. He walked with me about 40 feet away from the house and showed me where they kept the firewood. This was probably a mistake because i know i kept a fire going the entire time i was there and used a bunch of wood. The upstairs has a spiral staircase that leads to a loft bedroom with a queen and a single bed in it. We asked Walter about things to do in the area. Walter told us about the trail that goes around the property. It is 2.5 miles and offers magnificent views of the mountains. We took him up on it and enjoyed it. It was definitely challenging with a decent amount of climbing but with spectacular views. On the next morning, we ventured out and went to the coffee shop the owners of the property own in Lansing, NC. I fell in love with Lansing. It is the definition of small town America. We went into the coffee shop and enjoyed some coffee before setting out for our adventures for the day. Notable things about the cabin/property: The property is amazing and offers amazing views of the mountains. The area is quiet. The owners have two awesome friendly dogs that will come visit you and spend time with you. This was awesome. There is another cabin about 40 feet away, but there were no guests there when we were there. When we stayed at Old Orchard Creek, we parked by an old barn where the owners keep their chickens and cats. We had about a 15 minute drive to Lansing to the coffee shop or pizza shop ( pie on the mountain), which was great. West Jefferson was a fun place for us to go as well. We went to the movies and spent some time there. West Jefferson was probably a 25 minute ride for us. We traveled to Grayson Highlands and Boone to sightsee. Both of these locations were not to bad of a drive from the cabin. There is a dishwasher inside the cabin. There is also a washer and dryer, which came in handy. There is high speed internet as well. There was only one single thing that my wife and I noted that we did not like. It was the size of the shower. In the scheme of things, this is not a deal breaker. However, i did want to note that the shower is very small. It does not provide a lot of room to move around. I give the property 5 stars. From the time we arrived, we felt at home. The owners were knowledgeable about the area, provided plenty of guidance about restaurants and places to go during our vacation, and made our trip memorable for our daughter's 13th birthday weekend. We can't wait to go back.

The owners take pride in providing the community with locally grown food which includes pasture raised heritage Berkshire pork, milk from A2A2 cows, grass-fed beef, free-range chicken, free-range eggs, and homemade/handmade products such as soaps and deodorant. I've personally tried their porkchops, bacon and sausage, eggs, chicken and A2A2 milk which is easier to digest than regular milk. You can REALLY taste a difference in the food when it is grown in a super clean and natural environment. The animals are raised on pasture and they are never given any hormones or antibiotics. You can get their products at the Wytheville Farmers Market on Saturdays or at the Abingdon Farmers Market on Tuesdays. This family will deliver whole or half pig to individuals, restaurants and markets. Just call to make arrangements.

They also have a little kitchen in the back where they offer sandwiches and scratch made biscuits and homemade breads, fried pies and a bunch of other stuff. There's no seating inside, there are some tables, rockin' chairs and benches outside if you want to sit and eat. From the kitchen I ordered a ham, egg & cheese biscuit and got a little container of their banana puddin'. The biscuit was great, the nanner puddin' was ok, I also got a couple of their no bake chocolate oatmeal cookies for the road which were awesome, they call them "Preachers Cookies" here, I always knew them as "Cow Patties"... really neat place.

It was barely controlled chaos in the store to say the least. It was a Saturday when I swung through, so all of the tourists from the Blue Ridge Parkway were stopping by for their tourist shopping fix. So I don't blame the chaos on the store so much as the tourists acting all rude and entitled, shoving their way around the store. I digress. The deli sandwich I had was very good, and made promptly. I also had a homemade brownie which had the perfect amount of sweetness and walnut ratio to it. I wanted to try the Possum Pie but just get the nerve up to ask what was in it. I mean it couldn't have been real possum could it? They do have limited outside tables. I was lucky enough to snag one but you may want to pick your food up here and then plan for a nice picnic on one of the parkways scenic pullouts.

I visited the farmers market on a gloomy Saturday and honestly had such a good time exploring all…read morethe vendors. Even with the cloudy weather, there was plenty going on and so many different things to choose from. There were independent vendors selling everything from coffee, lemonade, kettle corn, pork rinds, pastries, flowers, candles, mushrooms, handmade soaps, dairy products, meats, essential oils, and more. There were also plenty of seasonal items like mums, pumpkins, tomatoes, and lots of apples to choose from. I almost talked myself into buying some mums and some handpicked flowers, but I couldn't commit this time. There were just too many vendors to choose from! Of course, I did leave with a few things. I grabbed some tomatoes, coffee, and lemonade. I also stopped by Las Mas Empanadas and got three empanadas: spinach and cheese, onion and cheese, and caprese. I had a great conversation with the owner, who was super nice and welcoming. I also talked with the owner of Hook & Ladder and loved hearing his story. He was incredibly friendly and it was nice getting to know a little more about the person behind the business. Another vendor that caught my attention was Bonjour Y'all. I spoke with the baker behind the stall and found out that he actually studied under the owner of Breakfast in Paris here in Greensboro, which immediately made me want to try his pastries. I love Breakfast in Paris, so I was excited to give his treats a try. I picked up an apple pastry and a cinnamon roll, and I'm definitely looking forward to trying more from him. There are also several vendors that seem to have permanent or more permanent spots inside the covered/enclosed area. There's even an ice cream shop that also sells coffee, which is a fun bonus. The market is really easy to navigate, with parking on both sides, sidewalks, accessible bathrooms, and an ATM on site. It's handicap accessible and very wagon-friendly, so bringing a little one along is no problem. Most vendors accept both cash and cards. Everyone I interacted with was super friendly, and I really enjoyed being able to actually talk to the people behind the businesses and hear their stories. There's a great mix of food, produce, baked goods, flowers, handmade products, and local businesses. Overall, it's a great Saturday stop whether you're looking to grab breakfast or coffee, shop for fresh produce, pick up some seasonal items, discover local vendors, or just walk around and see what catches your eye. I definitely left with more than I planned to, and I'm already looking forward to going back and trying some of the vendors I didn't get to this time.

I had recently moved to Asheboro and soon realized there are no solid farmers markets here and in my research located RGSPTFM. When I took the turn into the grounds, I was quickly impressed. They have a section for flowers and plants, a section for outdoor decor and gardening supplies, a section for crafts and such, a FOOD TRUCK section, and of course 2 large areas for produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, fresh floral arrangements, local honey, fresh eggs and so much more. It's so much fun to head out on a Saturday morning and walk through all of the sections. Lots of friendly vendors selling their wares and lots of people watching if you are into that. I come for the meats, produce, and homemade baked goods and have yet to be disappointed. So bring your shopping bags, wear your comfortable shoes and head on over for a wholesome weekend experience I highly recommend!
