The picture online or in videos do not do the Galata Tower Justice. It's a spectacle to see in person. If you're coming from the team from Fatih district, there's a significant climb to get to where the tower is and where to buy the tickets. The ticket booth is small but it is important to note that it only takes cash. The ticket line was stalled many times as unknowing customers did not bring cash but credit.
TIP 1: Bring cash.
The line snakes around the tower but moves decently.
TIP 2: There's an elevator inside, so you're not climbing the 144 stairs to the top.
You'll have many street vendors offer you cologne, flowers, and hair flowers Be aware of them and your belongings.
TIP 3: Be aware of line jumpers - people who stand in line without a ticket while the second person gets the tickets.
Once inside the tower, you'll take the elevator to the sixth floor. There's an cool scaled down model map of Istanbul with all the landmarks. There are also telescopes and windows to look out.
BUT wait there's more.
Go to the seventh floor via the stairs to the top and the observation ring that is outside of the tower.
Yes. That's right. There's a balcony ring where you can walk around the tower for a 360 degree
viewing of stunning Istanbul.
NOTE: If you're afraid of heights, get dizzy, or don't like be to be crowded and tight spaces, refrain from entering the balcony ring as there are all sorts of picture takers, kids, lovers who want that romantic moment, and the obnoxious folks with their selfie sticks.
After admiring the amazing views it's time to go down the stairs. If you're mobility limited, simply ask to use the elevator and they will accommodate your request.
Each floor on the way down has a different exhibit I highly recommend stopping on each floor and checking out the history, artifacts, and the interactive displays.
When leaving the tower, if you walk down the street, you'll notice people taking pictures, I would encourage you to do the same, just be respectful of your surrounding and fellow picture takers.
Galata Tower should absolutely be on your list of places to visit in Istanbul. read more
