If you have only few hours in Istanbul by some misfortune, then make your way to Sultanahmet Square, perhaps the place that best summarizes the historic city. After all, where else can you stand with the columns that stood for centuries and witnessed the rise and the fall of grand empires? Or where else can you stand between a grand Byzantine church and a grand Ottoman mosque?
Despite its Ottoman name, the square has been the center of modern-day Istanbul for centuries. When Istanbul was Byzantium, the square was the city's sole public plaza. When Istanbul was Constantinople, the square became the popular Hippodrome where chariot races and games happened in front of the Byzantine palace. When Istanbul was Konstantiniyye, the square lost its Hippodrome because the Ottoman had no interest in chariot racing but nonetheless retained importance as the main square of the grand mosque. Hence, this square alone has seen more history and transformation than many nations today!
However, ignore the history, and this square is still marvelous. During the day especially of good weather, Sultanahmet Meydani is a festive and joyous gathering of visitors from various corners of the world to gasp at the beauty of Ayasoyfa and Sultanahmet Camii. At night especially of adverse weather, the square feels like a glitch in the spectrum of time where you can seemingly glance into the Byzantine and the Ottoman eras in total tranquility. Thus, if you could go to only one place in Istanbul, make it Sultanahmet Square regardless of time and weather, because no matter what time in the day, you will find nothing but marvel here. Admire the grand monuments, ask the columns for their stories, and bask in the rich history of this remarkable square.

Caution for solo male travelers:
While you are enjoying this beautiful square at night, be alert for the scammers who roam in this area. Scammers who are very fluent in English would pretend to be fellow travelers and sometimes even attempt to build rapport by asking you take a photo of them first. However, no matter what, do NOT ever accept their invitations to their "cool new bar"! This is a well-documented scam that had already trapped countless naive travelers and robbed them of their money.
Once you suspect that they are scammers, immediately ignore them. Fortunately, they are not aggressive and will cease if you pay them no more attention. Unfortunately, the square is full of these scammers: in only an hour, I had to deal with at least a dozen of them. Do not fear them though, because they pose no threat until you enter their bars at their invitation. They are simply nuisances once you know their tricks. read more
