The Korean food here is so solid and I think it rivals even Koreatown- they even have a Michelin bib gourmand here for good value. To start I'm Korean American who traveled to Rome, Italy for the first time. And little did I realize that close to the hotel I am staying there is a Michelin star Korean restaurant. Ok that's new and interesting and I'm open to try Korean food done in other countries other than Korea or the U.S.. However, what a disappointment bc twice I walked to the restaurant in the stinking heat & humidity to try the restaurant I was turned down without explanation or reason. So I felt dejected and angered by their blatant lack of customer service. The 2nd time I went to the restaurant well within their business hours, they didn't or couldn't consider seating me for a meal. And though it was late and don't usually eat that late but my work meetings kept me and I was so hungry that I wanted some comfort food. That did not happen... rather there was a party 3 (non-ethic Caucasians) who went in and was seated immediately. So I followed them in and saw the owner or cashier look at me surprised and started to say they have a reservation!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah not only did I feel the prejudice but realized that other Yelpers' experience about the rudeness of the restaurant owner/worker so spot on. First time to Italy for a family trip, went thru lots of flight troubles and I was exhausted. 5th day in Italy, I found this restaurant in Rome with the Korean flag hanging on the entrance. I never felt so relieved to see a friendly sign welcoming me. At least I wont get lost here. As soon as their restuarnt opened the door at 12:15pm we were welcomed by the restaurant owner and the staff who spoke Korean, and their menu also had multiple translated versions. Third day in Rome we wanted some Korean bbq. We had googled a few places but this was the one with the highest rating, and we found out for very good reason. We both got the Bulgolgi. It came with multiple side dishes, all delicious. The service was insanely fast. I mean within 5-8 minutes? We later found out they had received their first Michelin star this year, well deserved. Walking around we noticed a Michelin star on the outside of this restaurant so we had to try it. Shocked that we would find reasonably priced authentic Korean food in Rome we were very curious as to what would be inside. Clean and relaxed atmosphere once inside. The friendly staff and the food were delicious. I don't remember what we ordered, but we loved how many sides we got with it. One of the items was a soup-like beef bowl that was surprisingly sweet. Didn't particularly care for it, but my husband said it tasted good with the rice. The appetizers we ordered were dumplings and that was amazing! Good Korean food in Rome wasn't something that I was expecting. After eating Italian food for the past couple of days, our entire family and family friends were starting to crave the taste of the homeland. We found it through Gainn. It's a somewhat small place, so you got to be sure to get there early. The most impressive part was that our server, who seemed to be of South Asian descent, was very fluent at Korean and was a very good host. His presence made our meal very enjoyable and relaxing after dealing with about 10 restaurants shoving fliers in our faces on our walk here. The food was beyond delicious. Unlike some Korean restaurants here in America, they didn't compromise on any of the flavors or spices to appeal to the "majority" population. I got the beef stew and it hit the spot for me. The banchan's selection was somewhat small (about 4 dishes) but each of them were very delicious. My only gripe is that they don't refill them like at most Korean restaurants.
