A tiny and rough-around-the-edges space that nevertheless does excellent shows. I saw Bloody Poetry…read morethere recently and was blown away with the skill and passion of the actors as they used the limited stage to do amazing things. An essential part of the offbeat renegade arts district on South Main, right next to the Civic Media Center.

I visited town for the weekend, and decided to take in a show at the Acrosstown Repertory Theater…read more It's a small place, and definitely not a professional theater. It's very old, and looks like it was converted from another type of building. Both bathrooms are marked for both men and women, and there was a single line to them both during intermission. The one I went into was single toilet with a bolt on the door, and I imagine the other was the same. The actors and staff were all very friendly. I'd been there before, when I lived in Gainesville, so I was pleasantly surprised to find that they are now able to take credit cards, where it used to be cash only. After the show they lined up outside for a meet and greet with the audience and we were able to engage in small talk and tell them how much we enjoyed the performance. The performance itself was a play called The Star Spangled Girl. It was farce set in the 60's, about writers of a very controversial magazine who meet a very attractive, super patriotic woman who moves in upstairs. She actually calls them traitors for their content, but they end up in a sort of love triangle and ridiculous hijinks ensue. It was not as polished as a professional production would be, but that's one of the things I like about the community theater scene, it feels more personable that way. So, I very much enjoyed my evening and would highly recommend catching a show here when you're able to do so!

I've only been here once for the Buddy Holly Story, so this review is based solely on that... But I…read morewouldn't mind returning! Unfortunately for you, all remaining performances of Buddy Holly are completely sold out. ENVIRONMENT This is a nice theater. The lobby is quite nice. There are simple refreshments available for purchase. The seats are sufficiently spacious, padded, and comfy. The way the theater is set up, you can't really get a bad seat. We arrived 2 minutes late for a sold-out show and parking was a bit problematic. I recommend arriving early! BUDDY HOLLY STORY My husband wanted to see this. Honestly, I wasn't looking forward to it. But it was a very good show. The acting performances were much better than I've seen in other theater companies (coughmadcowcough) and the music was a joy to watch. I sat next to an older gentleman who lived during the time period of this show and he very much enjoyed it, saying he wanted to see it again. QUALITY COMPARED TO OTHER LOCAL THEATERS This is the top reason I recommend you make the drive out here. I've been to a few different theaters around the Orlando area and I thought this theater was significantly better. The environment is much more spacious and comfortable, the acting and performance was much more engaging and convincing, and they seem to have either more talented people or more resources to pull off a much better stage and set design, costumes etc. I get the impression these people are professionals.

The staff were so sweet and accommodating and when we sat in our seats, a staff member took the stage to tell us about all the upcoming plays and a little about the theatre. I thought this was such a nice detail and it made me make a mental note to keep tabs on their upcoming shows, many of which sound amazing and are things I can't wait to check out! The theatre itself is small but the stage is decently sized and every seat in the house has a pretty darn good view which is awesome! The production itself was well thought out with attention to detail in the sets, costume design, and the choice of actors. The cast did a phenomenal job and I was super happy with our choice of attending the show for date night! Can't wait to go back :)

But upon arrival, I was surprised on what was inside the building! Parking isn't bad, it's either asphalt or grass, but plenty of space when you walk in, you can see the history of the building by the low ceilings and how some of the walkways are. You can either purchase tickets online, or in person, I recommend purchasing them online so you can select your seat in advance. There is a concession stand with various candies for a $1, and I'm talking the regular candy that you see at the store while waiting in line at Publix, such as full size Reese's, M&M's, Hershey's, Famous Amos cookies, sodas, waters, and Milano cookies for 50¢! The theater itself is small but intimate, and I feel as though you'll get a great view of the stage no matter where you sit. My wife and I enjoyed the performance, and the sounds quality was great. I may look forward to coming to some shows at the shoestring theater, however the drive was a bit of a mission, so make sure you have your phone battery charged for your GPS to find the place!

My favorite place in this building has to be the bathrooms. They must have put a lot of money into them, because they are BEAUTIFUL. Large stalls, gorgeous mirrors, and enough room if it gets crowded. The concession stand has all the typical fare Luke candies, water, soda, and popcorn, and my only drawback is theater seating. I feel when the house is full, having a middle seat will suck cause you have to cross so many people to get there. Overall, a great theater!
