But that's only half of the story; I'd recommend Angela Scarlato as a divorce attorney even if that ideal settlement had NOT been the case. After talking to 3 other attorneys, I knew that Angela was the ONLY one I trusted -- and I mean by a long shot! I guess I'm not the only one who feels that way, either; one of the first times I stopped by the office, a paralegal who worked for her colleague (and knew I'd already paid her my retainer, mind you) looked me in the eye on my way out and said, "she's truly a good person." Like a lot of people starting out in this long legal process, I was terrified by how much this divorce might end up costing me. (And like most, I'd never had to retain a divorce attorney before and had no idea what to expect). The day I came to Angela for my free initial consultation was during one of the most emotionally horrible parts of the divorce; I ended up crying during our meeting. I remember that day well; she didn't give off a "warm and fuzzy" vibe or anything; in fact, she struck me as intimidating -- one of the very reasons, in the end, that I hired her! She's a no-b.s. kind of woman when it comes down to negotiations (My favorite moment was when she simply told opposing counsel, "That isn't how this works" and walked away). Angela treated me with patience and respect right from the start-- told me to take a deep breath and take my time, offering me tissues and water. Believe it or not, some divorce attorneys will treat you like the silly little hysterical wifey, even during that initial consultation. You don't need that. A divorce can get complicated, and you don't necessarily know which details are important and which aren't. (That's one reason you need an attorney to begin with). As you may be able to tell by this review, I can be wordy, and some people have no patience for that...so I remember sheepishly sending these long-winded emails to Angela and waiting for her to yell at me for them (sort of the way a lot of doctors will when you tell them things they don't think are relevant -- but how would you know that if you're not a doctor?) My case lasted 18 months, I paid her over $30K, surprisingly and contrary to her assurances I got a bad outcome in court and got last month surprising bill for $13K.
