I certainly didn't expect to find statues and figurines of the Winnie the Pooh characters placed in an important spot normally reserved for the more expensive items. Yup, they were on a shelf right behind the counter where everyone can definitely see them. I'm not saying the stock here is bad, just that it doesn't seem that elegant to me. The store is clean, the stock is well spaced and presented in nice categories. The staff work hard and are mostly amongst the aisles dusting or cleaning. There is always someone behind the counter however. The service is good too - staff are happy to answer questions and will do their best to help you out. I'm only giving two stars for this one because when it comes to gift shops this isn't one I would typically race towards. Well, unless I was looking for a gift for my grandmother, or non-existant child. There are gifts for people who are really young and really old, but none for the 'inbetweeners' such as myself.

I don't understand, but whoever is doing the buying for Patches has some talent. I went inside, and you'd think that the tiny shop size would mean I'd be stumbling over the owner/retail assistant at every turn. Nope. Actually, I didn't see them at all. So I left, again, thinking perhaps I'd stumbled into such a quaint little shop that it didn't actually exist. But then I do watch a lot of Dr Who.

The other aisles in the store are stocked with gift items such as ornaments, bears, mugs, pens and calendars. It is a clean store and the stock is displayed in a very attractive manner. It is clear that a lot of thought has gone into the layout and the store is a comfortable space to move around in. The service staff her generally stay behind the counter but they are very friendly people and will join you in a casual conversation should you get it started. There is also a very respectable range of stickers here that I enjoyed looking at. The prices are low and reasonable as well. It is pretty good.

I fell in love with this store all those years ago but never thought take a business card or find out where it was. Years later, after moving to Melbourne myself, I finally found Crate Expectations in Malvern. And today I made my inaugural trip for 2011. This fantastic little store always has the best homewares and gifts. Today I fell in love with the printed fabric poufs and cushions. It's amazing how much is available in this store, which is just off busy Glenferrie Road. They've also got a gorgeous range of home scents and body products, flowy kaftans and dresses and a great mix of home products, kids's products and fashion accessories.
