Well this my filthy minded reader this is the place for all your hardware needs. Nestled on Great Western Road this wee shop is a fantastic emporium of all things handy. Filled to the very brim with all that you would imagine of a place like this and more, i really cant be any more enthusiastic about this place. Having lived in this general area for the last 5 -6 years, this has always been my first stop when i have the "eh....is that broken?" moment. With a remedy for my home ailment usually in stock and a helpfull handy owner always willing to offer help and assistance a the drop of a hardhat (boom, boom!!), the West End Hardware is the finest of place to be....... West End Hardware, it does exactly what it says on the...eh, sign.

It's like an Aladins Cave, with crazy cushions, stately chaise's, and obscure objet d'art. Not to mention the lamps. They do sinceriously awesome lamps - from multi-bulbed (of different sizes!), glass dome encasements, to the brightly coloured giant miners lamps. If you're not careful, you'll miss that they have a downstairs too. We did, and the staff ( who were in no way pushing sales), pointed it out. Third is whet they have some great pictures, in a variety of styles - but I really liked a big pop art one. If I had loads of money, I could easily spend a fortune here! The stock for somewhere like this must rotate quite regularly, so I look forward to checking it out again in a few months time.

Garden gnomes? Yup. Like I said, they have everything here and it is an exciting place to browse, as there are buckets upon buckets filled to the brim with knick knacks and hardware goods. So if you're feeling inspired and want to do some DIY around the house but have forgotten to buy that tiny screw driver for fiddly nails then this store is a good shout. When the weather permits many of the goods are displayed on the pavement just outside the shop. I came here a few months ago looking for some batteries and they had plenty of them and they weren't too pricey either. The shop owner was very friendly and asked if I needed any help. After that he got me my batteries quick smart and I was on my way satisfied that I could now put some juice in my camera and take some nice new pictures. A great little shop.

I used to pop into B&Q Everytime I needed something for a spot of DIY in the house, however this…read morehas changed as I've become more disheartened with the store and staff. Our most recent visit was because we needed to visit to pick up a Nest electonic thermostat as a courier had failed to deliver the item direct from Nest. Before attending B&Q we made sure that they had Nest in the store (after past visits where things were in stock but held on the top of the shelving, making it inaccessible during store hours). We were informed that it was in stock in row 22. On attending there was no sign of it at row 22, a quick look showed other thermostats on row 23, but no Nest !! (plenty of holders to put the Nest into). After tracking down staff and waiting a short while to get someone to attend they couldn't track it down either. A quick check on their systems indicated that they didn't have it in stock at all, another wasted trip and a waste of time we could have used to get the item from somewhere else (which is what we ultimately had to do). I have failed to have a good visit to this store in the last few years and it's put me off the B&Q brand altogether.

I love wandering around hardware stores in a kind of meditative state, just looking at the range of things and wondering to what other creative uses they could be put (maybe it's a guy thing?). It's not often I get the chance to do that in here as the place is jam-packed from floor to ceiling with all sorts of stuff, so if you're in a hurry or if there's more than one other person in this rather cramped shop, you'd be quicker just to ask them if they have your particular item in stock. Usually they do.

This great little family business is situated on Dumbarton Road not far from the Tesco Express…read more There have been two occasions when I've headed to this shop - and both times it has met my needs perfectly. The first time, I was after a hammer - which I found quickly and cheaply here. The second - I was in the market for some fairy lights for my Christmas tree - which again were easy to find and cheap. They even tested them for me in the shop to make sure they worked properly. As well as having the usual hardware store produce (you know, hammers and nails and such DIY tools) this shop also sells homeware bits and pieces and seasonal produce. At the moment they are decked to the halls with Christmas decorations, including a massive array of lights. Every time I've been in here I've had great service, and the guys who run it have helped me find what I'm looking for. Be aware that they don't take cards, though, so you may need to do a quick dash across the road to the cash-point.
