My swan song from a disappointing trip in the bird department. Off the eye test, it doesn't get much better. The beautiful sight of tissi's rotating in front of a fire breathing oven, potatoes in the tray below collecting the chicken juices as they fell, had me ready to run around the Bastille plaza yelling "LE MOUVEMENT!!". I thought this was going to be my first high level bird in the City of Light. Much to my chagrin, the one I got was just lukewarm. I was ready for my fingerprints to be fully burned off. There was so much potential here, but as always, I have to judge what's in front of me. If I don't have my integrity I have nothing. It landed at an 8.1/10 on the restaurant scale which is good, but if it was hot it could have been up there with the greats in the rare 9 territory. Don't get me wrong, the 12 Euro and up wine is great too, but why spend that when you can spend half and drink well? The "grocery store" brands here do not compromise on quality, and there are tons of well-curated items here... my favorites-- well, aside from the wine and beer section-- are: 1) the bottled pancetta and tomato sauce (which is really difficult to find in this store); 2) the chocolate-dipped gaufres (5 to a pack for less than 1.50 Euro); and 3) the store-brand carrot soup. It is very easy to find complements here to round out a great meal around cheese and a baguette from somewhere really good. Sometimes the people who work here can seem like jerks, but that was surprisingly not true on my last visit... note well: they close at 19:00.

It's like ikea- you are forced to go through ALL sections of the store - forced to pass through the beauty section, clothes, kids, hygiene, school supplies, kitchen, etc - in order to get what you want. First impressions: a cute little family owned grocery store... reminds me of my family's history as…read morerefugees fleeing political persecution in Vietnam. Our people fled the communist regime, my family were scattered to Australia, France, and to the US. Many families started small businesses in new countries and were able to make a life and a new home this way. To be able to speak Vietnamese with the owner and to laugh with her made the whole experience magical. Magical also due to the items I was looking for. Some background, the French colonized Vietnam and during this time things like french bread (for our famous banh mis), pate, French butter and other items were brought over to influence our foods. One of these items: Bretel butter (origins in Normandy, France, in the Isigny region) became a cult favorite. The trademark has passed hands a few times since it started and the ability to find Bretel butter in the US is difficult. So I was hunting for it at the request of my grandmother, mother and aunt. I have distinct memories of my grandpa buying a plain loaf of French bread and spreading Bretel butter on it and just eating it as is. Bretel butter was treated like gold by the families who could get their hands on it. I still remember the distinct salty and buttery taste. The Arome saveur soy sauce is a version Maggi came up with for the French market and my family swears it's different and tastes better than the Maggi you get in the US. Not sure if this is true but this was also a popular request since the last bottle I brought home in 2015 on my last trip to Paris Final thoughts: I would 10/10 recommend this spot. Aside from having both coveted items I was looking for (I bought FOUR tins of Bretel butter and TWO huge bottles of Arome saveur soy sauce to pack home to the US!)... the store also carries many fruits, veggies, and food items my family cooked and ate when I was young. Mung beans, frozen bitter melon, dragonfruit (just slipping out of season), kumquats, all kinds of rice, rice noodles, egg noodles, and sundry delicious items that made my heart ache for home. If I were to move to Paris, I know I would have access to the items that would help ease any homesickness I had. The family members who were working that day generously allowed me to leave my (heavy!) purchases in their store (I came across this store by accident in the beginning of a LONG day filled with plans of museums, sightseeing and food and would have had to lug these heavy items with me all day) with the promise to return before they closed at 7:30pm. Just kind and amazing people working here and the interaction with them warmed my heart. Please consider dropping by to say hi, buy some Vietnamese goodies and support this cute little shop. The checking out process is a little chaotic but just be patient and you'll be fine. There are the normal self checkout debacles, (although their machines do let you choose your language of choice) so you can at least see where you failed in the scanning process. Which will just mean you will need to constantly flag down the poor store clerk that's working that area for the day. Every other item you scan will have an issue and that staffer is working with about 8ish self checkout station so again patience is the name of the game here. If you choose to go to an actual cashier that is supposed to assist you with buying your items, this experience will be hit or miss. Meaning only 1 or 2 lanes are actually open and the cashier either have a horrible attitude or they are very helpful. Today was the first time in a long time I had someone who was actually helpful. In this store there are mainly locals, so very little tourist action. But don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it. But if you're like me, legit sometimes you don't want hotel food or eat out.
