Antiques on High has the proper smell of old things and has an interesting range of antiques. Rather than focusing on big pieces of furniture, which so many antique shops do, it uses its space wisely to host: Jewellery, books, records, clothes, ornaments, pictures, maps and various collectables. The condition of the goods varies, but they're priced fairly reasonably. I find it's best to go in without the aim of buying something in particular, but just to browse. I can't say anything has ever caught my eye enough to want to buy it, but I've seen plenty of other people who have found the perfect addition to their home or the ideal gift. The best bit is the craft section, where there's a gallery of jewellery, leather, pottery, glass and art in general, all produced locally and all promising to be valuable antiques in the future. There's a great range in here and you can get something for less than a pound or spend hundreds of pounds. Equally, you can pop in for a few minutes or spend hours browsing - it's almost like a mini museum. If you like antique shops, this won't disappoint; if you've never been in one, try approaching it. Don't be put off by the prison-like bars in the windows; the staff are friendly and it's a different world inside.

But don't dear if these are outside your budget as they also stock more reasonably priced costume pieces as well as beaded necklaces and bracelets. The shop owner is exceptionally friendly and always happy to chat (especially about the pieces in store). My favourite part about jewellery lane is the fantastic window displays which change to suit the season. They also will be able to help with repairs and alterations.

This section has some unusual pieces, from ultra-modern to hippie/gothic styles. The owner is very friendly, items are wrapped lovingly in coloured tissue papers and ribbons so makes for perfect gifts. They also provide a repairs and alterations service, which is sent off site so not on the spot. I had a very delicate gold chain altered and she took a lot of time to get it right when I was in the shop and the work was completed with great care.

Dave Christopher is a good solid jeweller with some very nice shops across the South West. The thing I like about this shop as opposed to other jewellers is how it caters for tastes right across the market. On one hand for instance they offer to buy people's gold for cash, alongside seemingly cheap and tacky earrings and gifts - clearly aiming at the lower end of the market. They only stock gold jewelry, all three plus platinum. They do have some exquisite pieces. In addition they buy and sell secondhand jewelry, which leads to even more treasures. This is probably mainly due to the fact that W R P Jewellery have been around for quite a long time and are well known for performing repairs and modifications. They also provide a valuation service for insurance purposes, as well as reselling. With the price of gold going through the roof during the recession, a lot of people have been tempted to sell their unwanted pieces of gold jewellery for scrap, and so I imagine that W R P Jewellery have performed more valuations than usual over the last couple of years.
