The Nice Carnival is one of the more famous carnival celebrations around the world. Though I would…read moresay the one in Rio and Mardi Gras in New Orleans are more renown. I was not planning to go to the carnival when I booked my trip to Nice. It was serendipitous that it coincided with my visit. But also infamous to me now because I attended the one earlier this year prior to the COVID-19 pandemic that was just a week or two before it started in France. Attended the night carnival which runs through Place Masséna, the famous city square. This is essentially a parade. Though it is different from the ones in the US, since you need to pay admission to enter. There are a few ticket options. You can buy a seat in the stands or a standing ticket and choose your parade location. Bought a standing ticket online for 12 euro. The event was very crowded and attended by people of all ages including children so it is family friendly. A curious thing about the event was that there were people selling bags of confetti. Carnival goers would then throw the confetti at others, even strangers. By the end of the event, my clothes were filled with confetti. I don't know why this is a tradition, but it has the appeal of a pillow fight. The parade had many great floats and was a huge production full of entertainers. Some notable floats were that of the British royal family, Snow White, Anna Wintour and President Macron. While it was a bit of a bore waiting almost a hour for the event to start, the event itself was fun and festive. It is held usually in February though so I would recommend a heavier jacket even though this is the French Riviera as it can get chilly. With COVID still happening, I have no idea how this event could go on in 2021. Part of the appeal of this event are the crowds. It would be very muted for this event to go on with social distancing. Though once the pandemic is done, I would definitely recommend checking out the Nice Carnival if it times well with your visit.

The carnival in the night, is also really enjoyable but reccomened getting a seat for this. Bring your silly string and confetti and enjoy the floats and music! A must do at least once when in Nice.

In truth, both are worth exploring, but it can be a bit much (about 4 miles each way). If you aren't up for that, I recommend staying seaside, but make sure to cross and check out Hotel Negresco and Villa Masséna Musée on the city side. I got an early start (I was out there around 07h30 on a Saturday, and it was great. The sunrise was beautiful through the clouds, and the seaside breeze was the perfect accoutrement to mid-seventies weather. For anyone going to Nice, taking a stroll down the Promenade is an absolute must. At the very least, I would walk from Castle Hill down past the beaches (closer to 2 miles instead of 4). Walk the Red Carpet…read more While we didn't actually walk the red carpet, it was interesting to see the festival being set up. It started the day after we visited Cannes. Lots of tents and pavilions along the way. So many ads for movies and the festival. Much of the road was blocked off to cars so we got out of the van and walked part of the way. Back in the day, it was easy to spot A-listers and movie stars according to our tour guide, Yann, but lately with the influx of social media, there is a lot less access. The cruise port in Cannes is actually walking down the road from the Cannes Film Festival, so after our tour guide from Liven Up Tours dropped us off. We actually just walked back to the cruise ship. A nice taste of the Cannes Film Festival.

The hotels are all very expensive, especially hotels situated across from the beach on boulevard de la Croisette. Hotel restaurants are all obscenely over priced. You can find better values in the old part of Cannes. The beaches are beautiful and free, many hotels setup bars and restaurants on the beach and include chair, towel and drink service. The shopping in the area is excellent if you are seeking the highest end brands from Europe, Louie Vuitton, Gucci, Chanel, Dior and Armani to name a few. I recommend checking the monthly weather reports for anticipated weather. We traveled in late October and it wasn't my choice as it was a business event. The weather wasn't great as it was cool and rainy. September on the other hand is beautiful.

I did see many famous French actors and actresses but not knowing who they were until people were rushing over to take pictures. Again great experience. I loved how gorgeous it was but most people were rude and I didn't like that very much. But overall a great experience
