You can choose to have your fish beer battered, panko crumbed, tempura battered, gluten-free battered or grilled and you can have hand cut Agria chips, crinkle cut chips, beer battered chips, kumara chips or curly fries. There are several house salads and sides on offer or you can select something from their burger/sandwich menu. We opted to have grilled tarakihi and trevally, hand cut Agria chips and a coleslaw. It was delicious, beautifully cooked and presented and quite reasonably priced too.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this establishment is a smaller one, and not a fine dining restaurant. Since it's a bit smaller, you can see the food being cooked for you behind the counter. I love the fact they you can choose to have a heavier version of F&C with a grilled fish or seared and baked with veggies. I wish I could give it a 4.5/4.75 starts only because there doesn't seem to be a restroom for customers(would rather my hands not smell like fish) and you have to pay $1-2 for condiments. I fearsomely feel like ketchup or tartar(at least ONE) condiment should be complimentary, but I'm not going to dock a star because I'm a little cheap. Overall, the fish is fresh and delicious, the fries are crunchy and golden. My heart's content.

My husband and I lived in Japan for a couple years. When we travelled to NZ at the beginning of…read morethis year we stumbled upon Kazu when we were looking for a place to have dinner. This was the last leg of our trip and for the most part we had done things pretty well on the cheap. A visit to Kazu cost us three times as much as any other meal we'd had for the simple fact that everything was so good and we were on nostalgia overload. When we stepped into the izakaya, we were immediately greeted with the familiar "irrashaimase!" The decor was definitely authentic. Most of the restaurant was Western-style seating with tables and chairs, but there was a raised platform section covered in tatami where you remove your shoes to sit cross-legged on a zaisu (legless chair). The walls were decorated with Japanese calligraphy and ukiyo-e prints as well as some Japanese beer advertisements which are always a little hilarious. We were seated by a friendly young Japanese woman and given the menus. So many pictures of delicious foods! And the alcohol menu was one of the best parts: a double-sided A4 page full of Japanese beer (including Orion from Okinawa, which we've never seen in Melbourne), sake, shochu, umeshu, chuhai and red and white wine!!! There was even ramune for the non-drinkers! Our eyes popped out of our heads. I had a few chuhais and my husband loved the Orion. We ordered edamame, spicy soft shell crab, chicken kamameshi rice, a sushi roll, and a few other things. For dessert they had my number one favorite Japanese sweet of all times: taiyaki! I hadn't had a yummy fish-shaped pancake filled with red bean paste in far too long. After dinner we had a little chat to the owner in Japanese and told him how much we loved the meal. He was friendly and we loved the chat. This was, hands down, the best meal we had across 10 days on the North Island. The only sad part was leaving knowing that we wouldn't be back for a while. We didn't even mind that we spent around $150 between the two of us just pigging out and indulging on food we rarely get. It was a feast and I highly recommend this place to everyone.

These days wherever you go (except Japan) it's hard to find a Japanese that's authentic, they're usually fusions or with Chinese influence. Kazu's menu has a great selection of food and drinks, many types of soju to choose from as well as chu-hais etc. The decor was simple and cosy, they also had an elevated tatami seating area at the front of the restaurant where customers remove their shoes and sit crosslegged at a low table. The food was banging!! We were an interesting party of four with one pregnant and one gluten free and found the menu to be accommodating for all. The sashi platter was amazing, super fresh raw seafood. The dumplings three ways was also delicious. In fact, everything we ordered was delicious. Would definitely come back again.

We were so happy with our choice. The pizzas are fairly priced for as big as the small pizza is (we crushed our own personal small pizza each!). I got the marinara with prawns and calamari, and my husband got the breakfast pizza with egg and bacon. Not too greasy, just enough to give you that brick oven pizza craving satisfaction. The unique and plentiful ingredients made this a wonderful treat. I am going to try to find a place at home with this combo or make it myself, I loved this pizza. The atmosphere shows you just how hipster Wellington is. With the large artistic oven sculpture, creative wooden decor, and 'hip' tins holding your napkins and silverware you get a true Wellington experience. Not to mention the music that plays overhead may or may not be the pizza guys personal passion homemade music he's testing out on the crowd. I'm surprised we weren't asked to buy an EP. but it was a good time.
