Great place for brunch. I expected to pay City prices for quality of food and service which was worth it. In fact the two excellent coffees and delicious date scone only $13. Yesterday dawned sunny and bright in STILL chilly Welly. Out for a bit of a burl round the windy capital we did a bit of shopping and searched out a decent coffee. Having been informed that the founders / former operators of Cafe L'affare had set up shop 'down the road', Having dipped a notch on my last visit to CLF, looking for better... I said to myself... it's 235pm, late lunch? hmmm....could it be ? We spotted ACME & Co., trading as Prefab on JESSIE Street, a stone's throw away. Maybe THIS is the one? Missed the lunch window closing at 230pm, nonetheless coffees were ordered and promptly delivered to our self seated table, water served, a nice chatty welcome by chirpy / attentive and BRIGHT staff. BIG room, high ceilings, industrial theme, fairly new, spotlessly clean, spacious, comfortable surrounds for hangin' out, checkin emails, even enjoying a game o SCRABBLE ! like the fellas at the next table. A few baked bits and sammies in the glass cases, and beverages, FULL bar, decent selection of QUALITY NZ vinos. Noted*** some spice and food importing, onsite baking... but for US THE COFFEE was REALLY good FRESH, and no problem serving mine as ordered: de caf, hot, in my own COVERED insulated mug, dairy free HOT oat milk on the side. Plenty of Wellington themed reading material lying around was appreciated, & we devoured the Dominion Post* newspaper whilst sipping away. (Smarter than yer average BARE ly readable NZ rag* is the DP) we be fans of Prefab and would return during breakfast / lunch hours to sample their fayre, based on our experience. Four stars. Their bread is baked fresh in house, and the coffee is robust and not overly acidic. I ordered the potato gratin, smoked salmon, and spinach Benedict. The hollandaise sauce was amazing and not too decadent. The atmosphere is lovely, and even when packed it doesn't seem overly full. There's gracious enough space for customers to walk to the counter, restroom, etc without being packed into the establishment. I highly recommend this sport for a lovely brunch. read more

I wish I'd discovered this place sooner! So PREFAB is a hidden gem. It looks like a huge house with huge windows. You get tons of sunlight sitting there. It's social and fun. A place for families, older couples, business men and women. I'll usually get filter coffee and a salad and sit for a couple hours by the window and do some reading. Menu is quite small though. I think they are closed on Sundays though (!) which is crazy to me because it's definitely a local favorite! read more

I had my doubts when I approached this place - there was a queue of people out through the front doors and down the steps to the street! I honestly thought I'd give it a miss - but my companion wanted to have coffee here, so I persevered. I'm glad I did. The queue actually moves through quite quickly, so we had a table within about 15 minutes, which I was happy with. Service is very good. My companion had a great salad with haloumi and we enjoyed several coffees, over a long chat. We never felt pushed to order more or rushed to leave - it was all great. All the food I saw coming to nearby diners looked very good too - I will definitely eat next time I'm here. Sorry to have doubted you, PreFab, I'll be back, thank you. read more

You had better get here early or else you will have to face the chaos that is the brunch rush waiting game, where the unfortunate contestants wait in a pile by the front door and hope for the best for a seat at this popular eatery. The Saturday brunch is fantastic if you are lucky enough to be seated. Try the Hampster Sandwich, an open-faced rendition of the Classic Reuben sandwich. Great coffee, and lovely service from the staff. It's also a nice place for small and large parties as they have long, gorgeous benches and an open kitchen with countertop service for single diners. A few friendly suggestions: assign a hostess to ensure guests waiting in line are properly seated in the order in which they arrived and possibly some chairs by the front door for elderly guests. Also, please consider opening on Sundays and closing a day during the weekday. read more

Chose to have breakfast here because of its location between my hotel and my first meeting of the morning. Tucked away in a sort of alley, I half expected it to be a bit of a dive but in fact it's a bright, airy and large establishment that is clearly very popular with locals. The coffee (flat white) was excellent and served quickly despite the large number of patrons, and while I had a short wait for my breakfast (garlic mushrooms with spinach, toast and poached eggs) came in reasonable time and hit the spot. The egg was poached perfectly and the rest of the dish was beautifully crafted and tasty (though it could have used more seasoning). read more

Came here while visiting Wellington for breakfast. The environment is really nice, airy, lots of natural light, a buzz about the place. The seating/service situation was a bit strange. You wait in the front of the restaurant to be seated but there isn't any dedicated host. And even though there were plenty of open tables, we had to wait about 5 minutes or so to be seated. Not a deal breaker by any means, but a little strange. For two people we ordered the Mediterranean scramble, the grilled halloumi with bacon, and a cinnamon pinwheel. We also got one of the detox juices. The grilled halloumi was delicious, although if I went again I wouldn't add bacon (it was too crispy for my liking, and not necessary). The scramble was great and served on lovely toasted bread which I believe they make in-house. The cinnamon pinwheel was definitely excessive for two people but we were so hungry we ordered it first and it was worth it - super moist and sweet with a hint of floral flavor. Overall the meal was a bit pricey, but about what I expected from a super trendy place with good food. read more

Absolute perfection in a breakfast spot. Started with a delicious flat white and then had the eggs (scrambled) with avocado. Could not believe the size of the portion! I couldn't even come close to finishing it all, and I came very hungry. Right away served by three friendly waitresses. The atmosphere was energetic but it was calm enough to enjoy eating. Could imagine coming back here to do some work on my computer in the future. Highly recommend this place to anyone, as there is something on the menu for all different tastes, as long as you appreciate good food! read more

Another excellent breakfast in Wellington. Really liked the chill vibe of this cafe. Although large in size, the feel was still fairly cozy. The scrambled eggs with avocado and smoked salmon were great. The smoked salmon was actually an entire piece of salmon, not small diced up pieces. Went at 11am on a weekday for an early lunch when it wasn't too busy - the coffee and food were amazing, the service was friendly and quick, and the space was light and airy. Thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be back, even though parking in the area can be a pain. read more
