Luckily, the line wasn't bad so I hopped right up and placed an order. The specialty creation I ordered was $6 and fairly large. Important: CASH ONLY here. I tried their "coffee lovers" which has cappuccino flavoring, sweet cream, pecans, and coconut. It was perfect for a hot day and came with both a spoon and a straw. The service was friendly and fast. I really enjoyed what I got. I was pleasantly surprised that you could actually taste the coconut and sweet cream individually...I dunno WHY that surprised me, I guess I just feel like a lot of shaved ice type creations don't have a ton of flavor. This one definitely did! Generous sprinkle of pecans on top, too. Really, the only flavor it was lacking was...coffee! You could sort of taste it in some sips, but it wasn't as strong as I was hoping for - much heavier on the sweet cream and coconut. Still, I absolutely enjoyed what I got, and if I see them out and about again, I'd reorder the coffee lovers or branch out and try one of their many other yummy looking creations. You can also build your own or order something more simple by asking for a combination of your favorites from a long list of toppings they have posted.

Southerland Sno Depot - Shark attack snoball (smaller size)

Although this business specializes in shaved ice (NOLA snoball style specifically), they started offering dirty sodas (or sodas jazzed up with extra flavorings, cream, etc) during their season this summer. This is indeed a seasonal business and as such they are mostly open during the summer and fall. Their fall hours, which start in early August, are Fridays and Saturdays only, from 1 - 7 P.M. They serve out of a small shack in the 5 Points area, though they initially started with a food trailer that I think they still have and may use to go to serve at events. At the shack, there's a decent sized parking lot and several picnic tables. When I came after an extremely hot day at work on Saturday, they were quite busy and seemed popular with kids! The woman who took my order wasn't super friendly and seemed kind of over it, but the other woman at the window who delivered it to me was much nicer! Their menu is really large and has a lot of specialty creations -- both in terms of snoballs and dirty sodas. They'll also make dirty energy drinks with Red Bull or Alani but they understandably won't sell them to minors. I was so incredibly hot and dehydrated from working outside all day that I decided I'd go big and get a snoball and a soda, just so I could say I tried both. I got The Coconut Caboose for my dirty soda, which is Coke (or Diet Coke) with coconut and lime, with the option to add coconut cream -- I passed on that. I enjoyed my drink! It had a good ratio of ice to beverage. I do think it was a little on the over-sweet side (yes, even for a dirty soda); I guess I just wish there'd been a little extra "something" to cut the sweet or make it more distinct, like maybe some vanilla. Still, it was refreshing! For my shaved ice, I got a shark attack, which is blue raspberry and tiger's blood flavored ice with sour patch kids and gummy sharks. This was a super fun and beautifully colored snoball! I'm honestly not typically a huge snoball fan but I devoured this one; it helped my badly dehydrated self out! It was saturated with flavors and turned my tongue blue. Fun! I ignored the gummy sharks but I do like a sour patch kid; next time, I'll eat those first before they get too firm from the cold. This treat would be a lot of fun for a kid because of all the cute and topical gummies. The texture of the ice was great, too! Give this place a try for your snoball and dirty soda needs. I don't think you'll be disappointed.

"Shave ice" is a bowl of ice cream topped with delectably shaven ice - not chunky like sno cones. The icey part is topped with your choice of flavor drizzled on it. A Snow Cap (condensed milk) is included as well. Most people have their Shave Ice with all of the above. It's a refreshing way to enjoy a lot of tasty ice cream with some very special extras. The owner has professional ice shaving machines used in Hawaii (we've been to Hawaii enough times to be hooked on the stuff ). If you're not interested in trying something new but you DO appreciate homemade ice cream, every ice cream at Oliwia's is homemade. It's only about 2 miles west of I-65 in downtown Hartselle. It's super bright and clean with ample tables and a couple of bars with stools along the windows. It was fairly busy but the line moved quickly. We each got a medium Shave Ice with a scoop of ice cream (lots of flavors to choose from), shaved ice, flavored syrup (lots of flavors of this as well!), and the "snow cap" (coconut flavored condensed milk topping). It was a little messy but yummy! The medium size was almost more than we could eat! It was a fun experience and an affordable way to be treated to a more unique dessert experience. The next time we're heading home from Birmingham I'll be exiting off I65 for Oliwia's Shave Ice! We're so glad we took a chance!
