The staff has always been extremely helpful, friendly, and willing to help a husband out with some very efficient gift wrapping. I mostly have only come here for very specific items, I'm sure you can browse the store for some pretty good gift ideas. From hostess gifts to stocking stuffers to really impressive personalized items, they usually have some the popular things that make good gifts. I have never had anything personalized here. But they have a good selection of items that can be monogramed and engraved. I am always envious of the Yeti items they have displayed while I am in here. For me personally, I have probably bought their candle items more than anything. My wife loves Tyler candles and they are one of the few places that carry that in Birmingham. But they have a few different brands of other high quality candles. Not cheap, but well worth the money on most we have tried. And most recently, we found our baby books here in anticipation of our new arrivals soon. Good store. Good people. If you haven't stopped in to check it out, definitely worth the visit.

When we did go back recently the store had a bit of a remodel. It was nice, but just did not have the same feel as before. Prices on items tended to be a bit more hefty and the selection seemed more, how can I say,... "tan?" We went on a Saturday, which used to be a very busy time for them. But this time the store only had a couple of shoppers. Just couldn't put my finger on it, but it just didn't seem as interesting or inviting. The staff seemed a bit standoffish as well. I suspect if we are back down that way, we may stop by. Just don't think this will be a planned destination any longer.

And since brand names/electronics/anything too expensive are not on their radar, we wanted to just get them a bunch of stuff we knew they would like at a reasonable price. Overall, I was very impressed by my first 5 Below experience. Everything was really clean, very well organized and a good step up in quality for the dollar stores (obviously for good reason). The staff was really friendly and I ended up walking out with 12 items for less than 60 buck including tax. Can't beat that. As for the products, again, it was for five year olds. They absolutely loved some stuff but weren't super impressed with others. That is to be expected. I look forward to many more trips here in the future. It served its purpose and served it well.

Primarily tables, cabinets, nightstands, and bookshelves. They also have a small, yet mighty, selection of home gifts. If somebody told me they needed a credenza or buffet, I would recommend Nadeau first. I'm not entirely sure where they source these pieces from, but they're a perfect combination of sturdy, well-made, and surprisingly lightweight. I have a beautiful painted black side table from here that I've loved for years and has held up beautifully. No scratches or anything. I like to swing on through anytime I'm in Homewood. Prices range from about $200 to $1,000+, usually just depending on the scale of the piece. I nearly took home a large, tall wardrobe style cabinet. They have a sweet store cat and the staff is always very kind and helpful. Stock here rotates often, so there's always something new to see.

The eclectic antique collection and selection is mind blowing, because there isn't a vacant spot anywhere in the house. There were all sorts of vintage glassware, crystal, dishes, shaving mugs, books, hand tools, hats, jewelry, window frames, lamps, paintings and on and on. It will take me more than one trip to see and process everything in the house. And lucky me because today - everything in the house was 25% off - everything. The Gentleman Owner is a most interesting person to meet as he shared the history of the house when I asked him when the house was built. I did make a small purchase today, but that's only because I'm still trying to process everything that I saw and what I want to purchase on my next visit. I will always value my trip to On A Shoestring Trading simply because I had the opportunity to meet the Owner. Such an experience! And there's enough free parking in front of the store, but you could park and walk from the nearby restaurants. I hope you will visit this place someday soon!

There's literally stuff packed in every corner of the main level, the upstairs, the somewhat basement level as well as outside in the yard. There are plenty of windows, doors, shutters and other woodworks for re-purposing if you're into that. Most are fairly priced by comparison to other places. Overall however, the store can be a bit expensive in it's pricing. Also they only take cash or checks as forms of payment so if you're headed over here, be sure to take one or the other. The merchandise itself is great, some prints of birds caught my eye, and I'm usually not a fan of mass-produced art at all. If you're looking for bed linens, this is a great place to check out! Comparable to Pottery Barn, but something a little bit different. Very happy to have Ballard in Birmingham, it's a great place to gather inspiration if nothing else.

Ferns are great plants they take minimal care and maintenance and have so many variaties. So too with the Japanese maples. I guess I like low maintenance plants. I saw for the first time lemon, lime, and orange trees. Impulse almost got the better of me. But I have made a decision to return and pick up some blueberry bushes.

This place is a lot more than a plant shop and you could spend hours just looking at all the interesting things they have for sale. Let me say, however, bring your wallet because they can be pricey. Also be careful if you have kids with you because the shop can be crowded and things can easily be broken. The positives are that the shop layout is beautiful and the decorators took a lot of time to make it visibly appealing to the customers. And, the staff here are friendly and very knowledgeable about plants.
