While visiting family in Iowa (we live in Arizona) my 12 year old son was hit in the eye by his…read moreyoung cousin with a whiffle ball bat the night before we were to fly home. His eyelid/brow immediately swelled up so much that we could barely pry his eye open. Rather than spend time in the ER, where they would have had to call in a specialist, we consulted with an optometrist friend outside of the area that advised us to go see the team at VHC. We called the minute they opened and they fit us in before we had to leave to catch our flight. Dr. Martha Smith, O.D., and the team were phenomenal in assessing my son's injury and eased our worries about any permanent damage and issues with flying home. I'm happy to report that after a nice "shiner" for a few weeks he is back to normal!

UPDATE: #2 Did not take me to collections…read more Updated to 3 stars because of that. No further stars as all the hassle I had to go through, pulling teeth would be preferred vs. dealing with this office manager ever again. Customer service is not in her vocabulary. UPDATE: Office manager called me back but was still confrontational! Updated to 2 stars only because a doctor in the office later called me. No follow up from their office but assured me they would take my money and not go to collections. We will see... I've seen better customer service. Original post: Dr Herther was superb at taking care of some surgical issues, it would be 5 stars in my book. Their Office Manager & total lack of customer service is what brought it to one star, ZERO star if I could. Never received bills from them, sent us to collections, no phone call no email no nothing. Office Manager would not stop the process even after paying 20% and offering more in 2weeks. ZERO customer service from her! Would travel to Iowa City or Chicago before recommending this office due to their billing practices.

I can't say enough great things about the practice and about Dr. Ewen, who I was fortunate enough to see as my primary care doctor for 4 years. I was really surprised to find such a great practice in a small town like Dubuque. Specifically, my providers always listened to me and addressed my concerns. They didn't lecture me or act like they knew more than me. I really hated to move away, mostly because I knew I would lose Dr. Ewen and this practice. But if you're in or near Dubuque, I have the highest confidence in recommending Grand River Medical family practice.
