When I walked along The Shambles, I was honing in for something to get my sweet tooth, and I spotted this lovely chocolatier. They offer various cream-filled chocolates and truffles, along with larger bar chocolates, drinks, and novelty items as well (I stopped by a month or so before Easter, so got to see a collection of beautiful chocolate eggs). I settled for a small box of 8 - I know I'll eat them all myself and it's my own fault if I get fat. Still, these aren't the types of chocolates you want to scarf down like a candy bar - these are rich and flavourful, and you'll get enjoyment out of each one. I'm personally a fan of truffles so I focused mainly on those, and on darker chocolates. My favourites from my collection were the Cocgnac Truffle, the Whisky Truffle, the Amaretto Truffle, the Coffee Cream (in dark chocolate), and the Gianduja. There was another one that I absolutely loved, something that was bitter and dark and presented like a truffle, but it was a limited item so they don't have it on their standard menu - bummer! If you're looking for chocolates and you're in York, you're bound to find something you like here. Their website lists many of their chocolates, but there are some unlisted options as well. Additional bonuses are friendly and knowledgeable staff, and competitive pricing. I meant to take some photos of my chocolates but...um...I ate them all too fast. Whoops? And it's not uncommon to see hordes of people queuing up outside for one of their chocolate cups with chocolate sauce... and why WOULDN'T you get one of those???? I recommend getting the milk chocolate inside the dark chocolate cup. The rich, buttery, creaminess of the milk chocolate is accented even more by the ever-so-slight bitterness of the dark chocolate. Ok, so I'm now looking up the next train to York.....

This seemed fair, as they weren't busy and I am American, which meant I wasn't sure what things would taste like. In any case, the prices are reasonable. The staff helpful and kind.

this is a super gimmicky sweet shop, mainly for the tourists in york!…read more it does give a slight ye olde sweetie shoppe feel, as you walk in? but thats where it ends! saw plenty of york fudge, york toffee, boxes of sweets with pictures of various places/landmarks of york. not my kind of sweet shop! they did have a good range of sugar free sweets, and giant gob stoppers, the size of a tennis ball! and any parent buying that for there children, needs there heads looking at! its not a big space, inside the shop, and it has not been open long. but it will appeal to alot of people, mainly tourists!

To be honest it's still not cheap at half price but it is gorgeous. I bought some little chocolate chicks and eggs as gifts (and for myself) last time I went and they came packaged nicely and made lovely little gifts. Hotel Chocolat also sells things like chocolate cooking ingredients and very high percentage cocoa chocolate. Gorgeous shop but definitely just for a treat!

Got a bunch of chocolate bars (milk, dark and raspberry) and a selection of their pralines. Even though very busy, the staff was very friendly and helpful. Prices are very fair. The chocolate bars were quite good. But maybe not exactly our style. Or maybe I'm biased because I'm Swiss :D But the pralines were divine! Pieces of art. Tasted as amazing as they looked. Really up there with the very best ones we've had yet. All kinds of ingredients and fillings. Just amazingly tasty. Surely we'll be back for more whenever we're back in York.

One family had a little girl who was probably 4 years old and she thoroughly enjoyed the entire tour. Our guide was fantastic from the beginning to the end. She was engaging, funny, and knowledgeable. The tour is interesting while giving you historical information about chocolate coming to England, the first chocolate families, as well as giving you a few tastes along the way. At the end you get to make your own white chocolate lollipop to take home. You also get to watch the chocolate kitchen make some chocolates and tested those as well. We thought it was worth the money and glad we did it!
