I enjoyed strolling the quarter-mile stretch of pavement along which this market was set. But I…read moregrew up on a farm, going to markets; I miss farmers' markets, and this wasn't that.
In San Diego County, it's rare to find an actual agricultural producer at one of our 47 Certified Farmers' Markets, though we have over 4000 (!) farms.
Instead, our "farmers' markets" - the one in Chula Vista included - are filled with stalls selling the usual diversions:
- Flowers and fruit purchased from wholesale distributors, the same things you might find at your grocer or a 7-Eleven, or sold along the roadside, on Mother's Day morning;
- Prepared foods, ranging from teriyaki to pizza to tamales to barbecue;
- Baked goods, some quite good (see: Tuberose Cake Studio), and some sold by aggressive and easily-angered folks pushing gluten-free, vegan, and dairy-free stuff that I never try, because neither am I afflicted with celiac disease nor am I a vegan, and I really, really like dairy in all its forms.
- Toys and dream catchers and patchouli, etc.
Don't get me wrong. This is all perfectly fine, and sometimes fun, and I'm happy that I found a source for a fantastic Ube Macapuno Tres Leches (see: Tuberose Cake Studio) that I didn't know I needed, but the search for an actual farmers' market within a day's drive of my house continues.
